• Weekly Practice 7.4--DUE TODAY--If you would like to keep your weekly practice to study from over the weekend, you can. If you turn it in next week with a stamp you will get full credit.
• We'll use today's class to begin our review time. Come to class prepared to do weekly review like we do usually on Fridays.
• The Acid/Base Test will be next week on Wed/Thu. You will be allowed to use one handwritten 3.0x5.0 inch note card on this test. You may write on both sides but you may not put any worked out problems on your note card.

• Weekly Practice 7.4--This is the unit review and will be due on Friday but turned in next week on Mon/Tue when we do our day of review. The Acid/Base Unit Test will be on Tue/Wed of next week! Time to start getting ready! :)
• Today will be your lab work day for the Identification of an Unknown Acid Lab. This is the last lab of the year and will be using the concentration of NaOH that you determined in the standardization lab from two weeks ago. Be sure to read through the instructions to see what needs to be included in your final write-up. There is not a check list for this one but there are specific instructions at the bottom of the lab. Be sure to include the parts that are required. This lab will be due--one write up per group--on Mon/Tue of next week.

• Proficiency Opportunity--Lewis Structure 4--This is the last in-class opportunity! The last day to do make-up proficiency tests is Thursday of next week by 3:30pm.
• Today we will be starting the pH Titration Curves Lab. Start your work today by getting your computer up and running and getting through the pre-lab questions with your group. Once you have those finished, get started with the first titration and start working through the lab questions. This lab is due next week on WED/THU!
• We'll be using Graphical Analysis again. You may need to load it onto your account on the chromebook. You can find the app in the Google Chrome Web Store.
• If you did not get a good complete curve for the two acids, you can use these: KHP and Phosphoric Acid. (I will make these links functional after the lab.)

• Today we will take a look at the opposite of voltaic cells. Voltaic cells use spontaneous reactions to produce a flow of electrons through a wire that we can use as electrical energy. Electrolytic cells will use electrical energy from an outside source to force a spontaneous reaction to occur. We can use this handy idea to make many materials and to make many materials safer, more durable, or just plain cooler.

Just in case you didn't note the solutions from the lab bottles (they are handy in coming up with full BCEs...we used: copper (II) sulfate, iron (II) sulfate, lead (II) nitrate, magnesium sulfate, tin (II) chloride, and zinc sulfate. Sodium nitrate was our salt bridge solution.

• Today we will start looking into one of the most common uses of redox chemistry in our daily lives. Electrochemistry is the chemistry of batteries. We will be looking at some simple batteries (called Voltaic Cells) to start to develop our understanding of how we can use the movement of electrons in redox reactions to our advantage. The Introduction to Voltaic Cells WS will guide you through a voltaic cell and help you develop the skills needed to analyze and predict how the cell will work. Whatever work is not finished in class will be homework that is due next class period.

• Today you'll continue working on the Redox Titration Lab. You should aim to get two trials run today...your first run gave you a ball park idea of how much permanganate you'll be using and a today's trials that could be your first quality runs.
• You should have your first trial's calculations for questions 8, 9, and 10 done when you come to class.
• You should run the calculations for each trial completed between classes. IF you have this done, you eventually can quickly run remaining trial calculations as you work and you'll know when you have enough good trials to call the lab finished!

• During class today, we'll collect our first data set together for the Redox Titration Lab. The lab involves some new glassware that is new to us so we'll use today to make sure that everyone knows how to use it. Once we have one data set collected, you'll head back into the lab to collect your first one with your group. Chances are the first set you collect won't be a keeper but it will give you some good information to make the next trials that you do a bit easier.

The Redox Titration Lab will combine what we have been learning about redox reactions with the stoichiometry concepts that we learned last semester. (The one you don't want has a mole holding a tetrahedral molecule.)

    • energy (q) needed to achieve the desired warming--with calculations!

    • Balance the chemical equation
    • Determine heat of reaction from heats of formation (use the table on the "Useful Chemistry Links" page...or check with Mr. Kanter to OK alternative sources of data)--show your calculations!

• Today we will be working on the Hydrated Salt Lab. I'll start class by giving some introduction to lab materials that we have not used yet in Chemistry. I will also give some information that can help guide you with your procedure and data collection. Make sure you have read the Error Analysis part of the checklist before you come to class...it will be helpful to think about as you work on the lab!
• You will need the calculation done for this lab by next class or you will have a hard time following error analysis through our work. The final lab write-up will be due as a group on the Wed/Thu of next week (Jan 10-11).

• Weekly Practice 3.3--This will be due (along with the pre-lab questions) on Mon/Tue
• Today we will be looking at the difference between polar bonds and polar molecules. Polarity causes some interesting interactions between separate molecules. We call those interactions Intermolecular Attractive Forces (IMAF). We will look into those IMAF's and some of their consequences today as well.

• Next class we will be working on the Exploring Intermolecular Forces Lab. The pre-lab questions need to be completed before beginning the lab and are your homework for over the break. You would also benefit from looking at the six properties that we are examining in the lab and determining how low or high IMAF would change the property.

• Today we'll spend some more time with the models from last class and will look at the three-dimensional shapes that they make. We will discuss how the Lewis structure can be used to predict this shape!

• Weekly Practice 3.2
• Today we will be taking a quick look at the difference in the bonds of ionic and covalent compounds. We'll use the Linus Pauling scale of electronegativity to distinguish between the bond types. This will also allow us to start thinking about polarity of bonds.

• We'll also spend some more time on Lewis Structures with the Molecular Models Lab. The lab should be as complete as possible when you come to class on Thu/Fri this week. You should have all of the table filled out except electron geometry and molecular geometry. Answer as many of the questions on the bottom as you can. We will talk about the two geometries that day and you might be able to be completely done with the lab by the end of class. Otherwise...the lab is due MON/TUE of next week which is earlier than normal because of the long Thanksgiving weekend.

• Weekly Practice 2.2--This is due next week on Mon/Tue for EVERYONE!
• Today we will start working on the Developing an Activity Series of Metals Lab--Single Replacement Reactions. The lab write-up is probably best completed in stages as we continue to refine our knowledge of Single Replacement reactions over the course of the week. It would be best to have all products written out and charge balanced before you come to class on Wed/Thu.
• In class I gave you a few charges that you can't just get from the PT or the notes:
  • When in ionic compounds you should use copper (II) and iron (III). The charges for silver and zinc are in the notes!
• The lab is due next Wed/Thu, Nov 1/2. You will need to have all sections of the checklist completed except the Error Analysis.
• We will spend a bit of time at the end of class going over what you learned in the Guided Learning Activity on Ionic Nomenclature. The lab will be looking at single replacement reactions and starting us down the path of being able to determine if a single replacement reaction will occur or will be NR...like we can do with double replacement.
  • Developing an Activity Series of Metals Lab--Single Replacement Reactions--come to class with the pre-lab questions and the pre-lab portion of the check list (on the back) completed. The lab will be due to turn in on Wed/Thu of the NEXT WEEK. That means you'll have lots of time to ask questions and make adjustments, if needed, as we learn more.

• Today we'll spend some time wrapping up and practicing the material covered on Friday/Monday.
• The new material for the day is balancing the overall chemical equation (in addition to the charge balancing we have already covered) and we will also look at ionic nomenclature--chemistry's way of saying "naming ionic compounds."
• Ionic Nomenclature Guided Learning Activity-- This is due next week on Monday/Tuesday. As you work through the questions, use the booklet we made in class (directions below if you still need to make one) to start writing down your rules for naming the different types of ionic compounds(Representative Ions--Grps 1-2, 13-18; Polyatomic Ions; and Transition Metal Ions). Polyatomic ions are not covered in the worksheet, but once you get the other two...you can probably figure out what you need for polyatomic nomenclature. Booklet and GL WS are due on Mon/Tue next week.

• Today we'll continue looking at the structure that makes up atoms. We'll talk about isotopes and how we can use information about isotopes to determine how many neutrons are in the nucleus. We will also use isotope data to help us calculate the average atomic mass that we find on the periodic table.
• We will also be doing our first Guided Learning Activity of the year today. Occasionally we will start a topic with a set of data or a model that we can look at and start to work on developing our understanding of how something works before we hit the same topic in the notes. Today we will do that once we are solid on Isotopes with the GL Activity on Average Atomic Mass. We'll take a look at how the average atomic mass on the Periodic Table is calculated.

• Today we will aim to accomplish a few things:
  1. Discuss observations from the lab and any interpretations that we could make from them.
  2. Orient everyone to the classroom with the Mr. Kanter's Room Science Scavenger Hunt. We will use what we find to make sure that everyone is safe in the lab.
  3. Go over the way the class will work this year and how things like homework, quizzes/tests and labs will be run.
  4. Finish with a "really tough" quiz.
• As homework for this first week, students are to do the following things for the next scheduled class period:
  1. Read the Class Syllabus posted here. Bring back the signed copy on Mon/Tue.
  2. Print, read, and then sign the Safety Contract. Have your parents sign this as well. Signed contracts are to be returned to class prior to participating in lab activities.
