Daily Calendar
Friday, 6/16/17
- Weekly Practice 7.4--DUE TODAY--If you would like to keep your weekly practice to study from over the weekend, you can. If you turn it in next week with a stamp you will get full credit.
- We'll use today's class to continue our review time. Come to class prepared to do weekly review like we do usually on Fridays.
- The Acid/Base Test will be next week on Tue/Wed. You will be allowed to use one handwritten 3.0x5.0 inch note card on this test. You may write on both sides but you may not put any worked out problems on your note card.
Wednesday, 6/14/17 Thursday, 6/15/17
- Today we will be beginning review. You may want to use the test review self evaluation sheet to start compiling what you'll need to know for this test. The test covers Acids and Bases but that pretty much brings in all of the other topics that we have covered this year. Use your weekly practices from this unit as your primary source of review and then branch out from there using whatever works best for you. If you need help picking review material beyond this unit's weekly practices, let me know and I can help you find something that will work.
Monday, 6/12/17 Tuesday, 6/13/17
- Weekly Practice 7.4--This is the unit review and will be due on Friday but turned in next week on Mon/Tue when we do our day of review. The Acid/Base Unit Test will be on Tue/Wed of next week! Time to start getting ready! :)
- Today will be your lab work day for the Identification of an Unknown Acid Lab. This is the last lab of the year and will be using the concentration of NaOH that you determined in the standardization lab from two weeks ago. Be sure to read through the instructions to see what needs to be included in your final write-up. There is not a check list for this one but there are specific instructions at the bottom of the lab. Be sure to include the parts that are required. This lab will be due--one write up per group--on Mon/Tue of next week.
Thursday, 6/8/17 Friday, 6/9/17
- Weekly Practice 7.3--DUE TODAY
- Today we'll take a look at titration curves and see what we can determine about the acid base reaction just from a quick glance and what we can determine from a more calculated approach.
- Titration Curves Data Notes
Tuesday, 6/6/17 Wednesday, 6/7/17
- Weekly Practice 7.3
- Proficiency Opportunity--Bohr and Electron Configuration 4--This is the last in-class opportunity! The last day to do make-up proficiency tests is Wednesday of next week by 3:30pm.
- Today we will be starting the pH Titration Curves Lab. Start your work today by getting your computer up and running and getting through the pre-lab questions with your group. Once you have those finished, get started with the first titration and start working through the lab questions. This lab is due next week on MON/TUE!
- If you did not get a good complete curve for the two acids, you can use these: KHP and Phosphoric Acid.
Friday, 6/2/17 Monday, 6/5/17
- Weekly Practice 7.2--DUE TODAY
- Proficiency Opportunity--Naming 4
- Today is a work day for the Standardization of NaOH lab. You'll have the entire class period after the proficiency to run titrations. This will be the last day with class time planned for working on this lab. If you need to run more titration trials after this you will have to come in during AO.

- Ka and pH Notes
Monday, 5/22/17 Tuesday, 5/23/17
- Weekly Practice 7.1 Proficiency Review
- This week's Weekly Practice is a set intended to help you practice the proficiencies that you need to be working on. We are entering the home stretch and you want to finish the year in a strong way regarding your proficiencies. Come in and get help if you need it and work on taking care of any missing proficiencies during AO, before/after school, or during lunch! Remember, we are all aiming for 100% in the Proficiency category of our grades! You can do it!
- Proficiency Opportunity--Geometry 4 and IMAF 4
- Today we are going to start into the last unit of the year: Acid and Base Reactions.
- We will start off the unit by taking a look at some ideas about solutions (like concentration and dissociation) that we have touched on a bit in previous work but we'll dig a bit deeper. Solutions Notes
Friday, 5/19/17
- We'll spend a bit of time today sharing a bit of what we found out while looking into potential career paths. We'll fill in a bit of that blank space at the bottom of the worksheet!
- Next week we will start in on Acids and Bases...the last unit of the year!
Wednesday, 5/17/17 Thursday, 5/18/17
- Proficiency Opportunity--Lewis Structures 4
- Today we are going to spend a bit of time looking at career options in the world of chemistry. We will also look a bit at what you would like to do and what kinds of science you can expect to see through college. TheConsidering Future Careers work sheet will be your guide. This needs to be finished up when you get to class on Friday because we'll be doing some group work with your answers.
- The link to the ACS Website we'll be using today is: http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/careers/college-to-career/areas-of-chemistry.html
Monday, 5/15/17 Tuesday, 5/16/17
- No Weekly Practice this week :)
- Proficiency Opportunity--Several Opportunities after the Unit Test!
- Oxidation and Reduction Unit Test--You'll have the first half hour of class to go over any last minute questions.
Friday, 5/12/17
- Weekly Practice 6.4--DUE TODAY--You can keep this one over the weekend to study from if you'd like.
- Come to class prepared for the weekly review/quiz!
- Mon/Tue of next week will be the Unit Test. Make sure you prepare over the weekend!
- The Voltaic Cells Lab is also due Mon/Tue. Just in case you didn't note the solutions from the lab bottles (they are handy in coming up with full BCEs...we used: copper (II) sulfate, iron (II) sulfate, lead (II) nitrate, magnesium sulfate, tin (II) chloride, and zinc sulfate. Sodium nitrate was our salt bridge solution.
Wednesday, 5/10/17 Thursday, 5/11/17
- Proficiency Opportunity--Bohr and Electron Config 3
- Today we will take a look at the opposite of voltaic cells. Voltaic cells use spontaneous reactions to produce a flow of electrons through a wire that we can use as electrical energy. Electrolytic cells will use electrical energy from an outside source to force a spontaneous reaction to occur. We can use this handy idea to make many materials and to make many materials safer, more durable, or just plain cooler.
- Electrolytic Cell Notes
Monday, 5/8/17 Tuesday, 5/9/17
- Weekly Practice 6.4--Note--we used a half reaction on this assignment that isn't on the SRP Table from class. There is a small SRP Table on this assignment that has the half reaction you'll be needing!
- Proficiency Opportunity--Sig Fig 4
- Here is a link for the SRP Table that we have used in class.
- Today we will be doing the Voltaic Cells Lab. The lab questions are due individually on Mon/Tue of next week. It would be wise to get on this a bit early because if you do you will have time this week during AO to come in and retake lab data. If you wait until Sunday night to work up the lab data, you won't have a chance to correct any problems before the due date.
Friday, 5/5/17
- Weekly Practice 6.3--DUE Today
- Come to class prepared for the weekly review and quiz!
- The Voltaic Cells Lab will be done on Mon/Tue of next week. The usual highlighting and pre-lab questions are due at the beginning of class.
Wednesday, 5/3/17 Thursday, 5/4/17
- Redox Titration Labs are due today!
- Proficiency Opportunity--Stoichiometry 3 and Dim. Analysis 3
- Today we will spend some time revisiting the ideas covered in the Intro to Voltaic Cells activity during the last class.
- Voltaic Cells and Electrochemistry Notes
Monday, 5/1/17 Tuesday, 5/2/17
- Weekly Practice 6.3
- Proficiency Opportunity--Periodic Trends 3
- Today we will start looking into one of the most common uses of redox chemistry in our daily lives. Electrochemistry is the chemistry of batteries. We will be looking at some simple batteries (called Voltaic Cells) to start to develop our understanding of how we can use the movement of electrons in redox reactions to our advantage. The Introduction to Voltaic Cells WS will guide you through a voltaic cell and help you develop the skills needed to analyze and predict how the cell will work. Whatever work is not finished in class will be homework that is due Wed/Thu.
- Voltaic Cell Applet--Click on this link to get to the applet you'll be using for the Intro to Voltaic Cells WS.
- Remember that your Redox Titration Labs are due on Wed/Thu at the beginning of class!
Friday, 4/28/17
- Weekly Practice 6.2--with net ionic equations--DUE TODAY
- Come to class prepared for the weekly review and quiz!
- Lab write-ups are due AS A GROUP next week on Wed/Thu.
Wednesday, 4/26/17 Wednesday, 4/27/17
- Proficiency Opportunity--Naming 3
- You will have the entire class period today to collect data for your titration lab. You should aim to finish around four trials during the class time today. This should be enough to finish up the data collection and you can use the remaining lab time to work on your write-up. Any further trials that your group needs to run will be done outside of class time.
Monday, 4/24/17 Tuesday, 4/25/17
- Weekly Practice 6.2--Instead of turning these in today--I'd like you to add the net ionic equations to the redox reactions. WP 6.2 with net ionic equations will be due Friday.
- I would also like you to take a look at pinnacle and make a list of the proficiency topics that you still need to finish up. Attach your list to this week's Weekly Practice.
- Proficiency Opportunity--IMAF and Geometry 3
- Today you'll continue working on the Redox Titration Lab. You should aim to get two trials run today...your first run gave you a ball park idea of how much permanganate you'll be using and a today's trials that could be your first quality runs.
- You should have your first trial's calculations for questions 8, 9, and 10 done when you come to class.
- You should run the calculations for each trial completed between classes. IF you have this done, you eventually can quickly run remaining trial calculations as you work and you'll know when you have enough good trials to call the lab finished!
Thursday, 4/20/17 Friday, 4/21/17
- Weekly Practice 6.2 should be done by today but it won't be collected because we are going to use it next week again!
- Proficiency Opportunity--Lewis Structure 3
- During class today, we'll collect our first data set together for the Redox Titration Lab. The lab involves some new glassware that is new to us so we'll use today to make sure that everyone knows how to use it. Once we have one data set collected, you'll head back into the lab to collect your first one with your group. Chances are the first set you collect won't be a keeper but it will give you some good information to make the next trials that you do a bit easier.
Tuesday, 4/18/17 Wednesday, 4/19/17
- Weekly Practice 6.2
- Proficiency Opportunity--BCE 3
- Today we will be looking at the vocabulary of redox reactions. You saw some of this on Weekly Practice 6.1 and in the Guided Learning activity from last week. By the end of the day you will be able to be well behaved in using redox vocabulary and will be able to simplify redox reactions using half reactions.
- Redox Vocab and Half Reactions Notes
- The next few class periods we will be working on a lab. The Redox Titration Lab will combine what we have been learning about redox reactions with the stoichiometry concepts that we learned last semester. There seems to be an old version of the lab that is still coming up sometimes. If you do not have a checklist with the a giant mole crashing through a city at the bottom you'll need to download the file through a different browser. (The one you don't want has a mole holding a tetrahedral molecule.)
- This lab has the checklist at the bottom. You'll need to do the pre-lab portion of the checklist before you start the lab. It will be due Thu/Fri at the beginning of class.
Thursday, 4/13/17 Monday, 4/17/17
- Weekly Practice 6.1--DUE
- Proficiency Opportunity--Lewis Structures 2
- Today we will formalize some of the things that we looked at in the Redox Guided Learning Activity during the last class. The definition of a redox reaction has been refined over time. We'll take a look at those changes today and see how we can use the three different definitions to help us find out if a reaction is redox or something else.
- Redox Definitions Notes
Tuesday, 4/11/17 Wednesday, 4/12/17
- Weekly Practice 6.1
- Proficiency Opportunity--Bohr and Electron Config 2. Proficiency grades are starting to show up as "Z" in the grade book. If you see that your grade has dropped, don't fret! Come in and do a make-up proficiency during AO and you'll see your grade go right back up!
- Today we will spend a bit of time talking about a set of rules for assigning oxidation numbers to elements involved in reactions. The Oxidation Numbers WS has the rules we will use and some good practice for assigning these numbers. When you come to class next class, bring in your set of rules that you like to use!
- We'll start thinking about Oxidation and Reduction Reactions in the same way we start many things...with a Redox--Guided Learning Activity. You'll have about half of the class period today to work on this with a partner. Any portion of the activity that is not finished in class is homework that will be due next class.

- Proficiency Opportunity: Stoich 1 and Dimensional Analysis 1
- Today we will begin a unit that will last pretty much all of the way to spring break. We will spend our time in this unit looking into what it means to be a chemical reaction--bonds break and are remade in a different way. We will look at how this happens, how we can alter the way it happens, and how energy plays a role in the process. Today our focus is going to be on an idea called Collision Theory which is the basic premise that we use to describe how reactions occur.
- Collision Theory Notes
Friday, 2/10/17 Monday, 2/13/17

- Weekly Practice 2.3
- Weekly Practice 2.2 is DUE today
- Proficiency Opportunity: Electron Configuration 2 / Bohr Model 3--This is the first proficiency topic that now has fewer than three chances left in class to complete and will be the first Z to go into Pinnacle if you need to come in and do a make-up. If you notice your grade drop...do not stress out! Just review your notes, come in for some help, and take a make-up proficiency test and your grade will jump right back up! :)
- Today we will discuss Single Replacement Reactions in detail.
- Single Replacement Reactions Notes
Tuesday, 10/25/16 Wednesday, 10/26/16
- Today we will start working on the Developing an Activity Series of Metals Lab--Single Replacement Reactions. The lab write-up is probably best completed in stages as we continue to refine our knowledge of Single Replacement reactions over the course of the week. It would be best to have all products written out and charge balanced before you come to class on Wed/Thu.
- The lab is due next Wed/Thu, Nov 2/3. You will need to have all sections of the checklist completed except the Error Analysis.
Monday, 10/24/16
- Weekly Practice 2.2--This is due next week on Mon/Tue for everyone!
- We will spend a bit of time at the end of class going over what you learned in the Guided Learning Activity on Ionic Nomenclature. Use the Naming Ionic Compounds GL worksheet as well as the three extra naming slides on last week's notes to help you with the lab. Ionic Nomenclature notes were posted last week...but just in case you didn't notice them: Notes on Balancing Chemical Equations and Ionic Nomenclature
- Developing an Activity Series of Metals Lab--Single Replacement Reactions--come to next class with the pre-lab questions and the pre-lab portion of the check list (on the back) completed. The lab will be due to turn in on Wed/Thu of NEXT WEEK. That means you'll have lots of time to ask questions and make adjustments, if needed, as we learn more.
Friday, 10/21/16
- DUE--Weekly Practice 2.1--Come to class prepared for the weekly review and quiz!
- This weekend, you will need to look over the lab that we'll be starting on Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. The lab will be looking at single replacement reactions and starting us down the path of being able to determine if a single replacement reaction will occur or will be NR...like we can do with double replacement.
Wednesday, 10/19/16 Thursday, 10/20/16
- Proficiency Opportunity: Balancing Chemical Equations 1
- Today we'll spend some time wrapping up and practicing the material covered on Monday/Tuesday.
- The new material for the day is balancing the overall chemical equation (in addition to the charge balancing we have already covered) and we will also look at ionic nomenclature--chemistry's way of saying "naming ionic compounds."
- Ionic Nomenclature Guided Learning Activity-- This is due next week on Monday/Tuesday. As you work through the questions, use the booklet we made in class (directions below if you still need to make one) to start writing down your rules for naming the different types of ionic compounds(Representative Ions--Grps 1-2, 13-18; Polyatomic Ions; and Transition Metal Ions). Polyatomic ions are not covered in the worksheet, but once you get the other two...you can probably figure out what you need for polyatomic nomenclature. Booklet and GL WS are due on Tue/Wed next week.
- Notes on Balancing Chemical Equations and Ionic Nomenclature
Monday, 10/17/16 Tuesday, 10/18/16
- Weekly Practice 2.1
- We will spend this week working toward writing complete and correct balanced chemical equations. We will start today with what you have to do when you predict products. Many of the reactions we are working with involve ionic compounds and those compounds must be charge balanced. With some reaction types, you can also predict whether the reaction will occur or not. Today we will look at how that can be done with double replacement reactions.
- Charge Balance and Solubility Rules Notes
Friday, 10/14/16
- No school today...enjoy your long weekend!!!
Wednesday, 10/12/16 Thursday, 10/13/16
- Today in class we'll go over the ideas that you came up with during the lab on Monday and Tuesday. Chemists have Five Reaction Types that describe the chemistry that happens in a wide range of reactions. We'll take a look at these five reaction types today and will practice using those reaction types to predict what the products of a chemical reaction will be. Over the next week or so, we will develop skills necessary to write out accurate and complete balanced chemical equations.
- Chemical Reactions and Reaction Types Notes
Monday, 10/10/16 Tuesday, 10/11/16
- No Weekly Practice this week...the lab will take it's place this week since we only meet twice.
- Proficiency Opportunity: Bohr 2 and Electron Configuration 1
- Today we will be starting to look at chemical reactions. We will start with the Chemical Reactions Lab. This is a lab that encourages you to put yourself in the shoes of the first scientists to approach a new problem. We'll use this lab to practice coming up with possible options and then will spend some time on Wednesday and Thursday deciding which of our possibilities is the most reasonable and why.
- LAB QUESTIONS ARE DUE THIS WED/THU--That is unusual but we will be doing some stuff with them in class!
Friday, 10/7/16
Wednesday, 10/5/16 Thursday, 10/6/16
- Weekly Practice 1.4--DUE TODAY
- Atomic Spectra Lab is DUE TODAY!
- Today we will spend some time reviewing during the first half of class. Come to class with your self evaluation sheet and any questions you have come up with. That will help make our review time more helpful for you!
- We'll be taking the test for the unit during the second half of class.
Monday, 10/3/16 Tuesday, 10/4/16
- Weekly Practice 1.4--.you will want to get a jump on this weekly practice as it is due on Wed/Thu when you come for the test.
- Proficiency Opportunity: Scientific Notation 2
- Today we will take a look at how we can write out electron configurations even more quickly!
- Electron Configuration Wrap Up Notes
- This is the last week of the Atomic Structure Unit. That means this coming Wed/Thu is the Unit Test. Remember that while you can use notes, homework, and other resources on the weekly quizzes...it is just you, the yellow PT, and your calculator on the end of unit tests. We need to take a few minutes and reflect on where we stand. Preparing for chemistry tests starts with thinking about what you have down pat and what you need work on. Use the Chemistry Test Review--Self Evaluation to help guide this process. Your Self Evaluation is DUE with your test on Wed/Thu.
Friday, 9/30/16--EVEN
Wednesday, 9/28/16 Thursday, 9/29/16
- Today we will cover the question: How do we know about atomic structure?
- Neils Bohr modeled the atom (we have used his model a bunch!) and ran some calculations about what you would see the electrons do when they were excited by high voltage electricity. We will look at the emission spectra of hydrogen and a few other elements and take a look at the light produced to provide evidence that our model of the atom is a pretty good one!
- Atomic Spectra Animation Slide from class--you'll have to open this in PowerPoint and run the slide show to see the animation.
- Atomic Spectra Activity--Lab Sheet (Due Wed/Thu of Next Week--make sure you try it before Friday so you can ask any questions you may have!)
Monday, 9/27/16 Tuesday, 9/28/16
- Weekly Practice 1.3
- Two weeks ago we talked about some of the lies you are told about atoms when you are in middle school. We'll spend a bit of time today learning about Electron Configurations. This is a way we have of accounting for how many electrons are in an atom and where they are in the electron shells. We'll use a tool called an Aufbau Diagram to help us determine the electron configuration for an element.
- Quantum Model and Electron Configuration Notes
- We will also talk a bit about the Quantum Model of the atom which is our most accurate model as far as we understand the atom today. It is a very odd model and I'll help you to know which parts you are responsible for knowing and which parts are just cool to think about in class!
- This video is a great look at some of the funkiness of the Quantum Model!
- We'll spend a bit of time today also revisiting the periodic trends we covered last week.
- If you haven't already noticed, I embedded some of the videos we talked about last week down by the notes for periodic trends.
Thursday, 9/22/16 Friday, 9/23/16
- DUE -- Weekly Practice 1.2
- Come to class ready for the weekly quiz!
- With the extra time today we will clean up any topics from the week that we did not fully cover or that have inspired further questions.
Tuesday, 9/20/16 Wednesday, 9/21/16
- Proficiency Opportunity: Scientific Notation
- We'll be looking at the Periodic Table during class today. If you haven't already, you should definitely come today with a printout of the Periodic Table from the links on top of the website!
- Today we'll be taking a look at Effective Nuclear Charge. Zeff is an important characteristic of atoms that we will use many times throughout this unit and the rest of the year to predict a variety of properties about atoms. We can use Zeff as a tool to predict properties like the relative size of atoms (we'll do that this week!) all the way to things like the relative strengths of acids (we'll do that waaayy later in the year!). It is a powerful tool that you'll want to make sure you can use!
- We'll model effective nuclear charge in class today and spend the second half of class making a drawing of your own analogy--similar (but different) to the one we used in class. Your drawing will be due next class if you don't finish it during class time.
- Your analogy should have something that represents protons, electrons (shielding and valence!), and distance. I should be able to take a look at your analogy and see how the attraction to the nucleus changes because of shielding and distance.
- Effective Nuclear Charge Notes
- Today the focus of class will be using effective nuclear charge to predict relative properties of elements. We will look at a few properties in particular:
- Atomic Radius (Size), Electronegativity, and Ionization Energy
We call these "Periodic Trends" because they tend to change in predictable fashion as you move across the PT. Many people try to memorize the direction of the trends and use those memorized facts to answer questions. This is a good opportunity though to practice logically reasoning through how effective nuclear charge changes properties of an atom. Less memorization is nice (and you'll be able to put these ideas back together later without having to resort to looking up facts that you may have forgotten).
- Periodic Trends Notes
- Which periodic trend does this video demonstrate?
- This one is fake but it is way more fun than the real thing. Which periodic trend does the video demonstrate?
Monday, 9/19/16
- Weekly Practice 1.2
- We will spend a bit of time today talking about how Fridays will work and will take a look at Quiz 1.1 that you guys did not get a chance to take last week.
- Scientific Notation Notes--It may have been awhile since you've thought about numbers in scientific notation so here are some notes just in case you need a bit of a reminder for the weekly practice.
Friday, 9/16/16
Wednesday, 9/14/16 Thursday, 9/15/16
- Proficiency Opportunity: Bohr 1
- Today we'll continue looking at the structure that makes up atoms. We'll talk about isotopes and how we can use information about isotopes to determine how many neutrons are in the nucleus. We will also use isotope data to help us calculate the average atomic mass that we find on the periodic table.
- We will also be doing our first Guided Learning Activity of the year today. Occasionally we will start a topic with a set of data or a model that we can look at and start to work on developing our understanding of how something works before we hit the same topic in the notes. Today we will do that once we are solid on Isotopes with the GL Activity on Average Atomic Mass. We'll take a look at how the average atomic mass on the Periodic Table is calculated.
- Average Atomic Mass Notes
Monday, 9/12/16 Tuesday, 9/13/16
- Weekly Practice 1.1
- Many of you have already turned these in but if you have not signed and returned the Class Syllabus and Safety Contract please take care of that as soon as you can :)
- We'll start today with a pre-test for the proficiencies for the year. Don't worry...this is just a pre-test for me to take a look at and will not affect your grade in any way. We'll use this pre-test time also as a chance to look at how you will be able to earn credit for the proficiency portion of your overall grade.
- We'll start in on the real chemistry! First we'll look at atomic structure and how we can find out what and how many particles make up an atom. We'll also start looking at how we can use the periodic table as a helpful tool in Chemistry. Atomic Structure Notes
Thursday, 9/8/16 Friday, 9/9/16
- Today we will aim to accomplish a few things:
- Discuss observations from the lab and any interpretations that we could make from them.
- Orient everyone to the classroom with the Mr. Kanter's Room Science Scavenger Hunt. We will use what we find to make sure that everyone is safe in the lab.
- Go over the way the class will work this year and how things like homework, quizzes/tests and labs will be run.
- Finish with a "really tough" quiz.
- As homework for this first week, students are to do the following things for the next scheduled class period:
- Read the Class Syllabus posted here. Bring back the signed copy on Mon/Tue.
- Print, read, and then sign the Safety Contract. Have your parents sign this as well. Signed contracts are to be returned to class prior to participating in lab activities.
Wednesday, 9/7/16
- Welcome to General Chemistry! We have a lot of exciting things to try this year in class.
- Today we will start with an introduction to what you might expect to see during the year in Chemistry.
- We will jump right in with a LAB on the first day.
- Your homework tonight is to fill out a Google Form to show that you found the website and to give me some information about yourselves.
