- OBJECTIVE: Begin initial design work on the school's new sign.
- Students were informed that they will be presenting their sign designs to members of the school's leadership team in class on 2/8.
- Students were reminded that they have until 1/31 to complete all work for this semester.
- Staff signs and sign parts needing finish were finished at the beginning of class. They can be hung tomorrow.
- Students spent the period in their groups working on the CV Sign Proposal Assignment. Students are to place all of their group materials into this Design Group Folder by the end of the day on 1/31

- Students spent the period in their groups working on the CV Sign Proposal Assignment. This assignment is due 1/30.
- OBJECTIVE: Begin initial design work on the school's new sign.
- Students were instructed to look at Pinnacle. For the installed sign grades, students were told the following:
- If there is a score, the sign can be considered complete.
- If there is a Z and just a name and no other comment in the comment section, Mr. K may not have looked at it yet, or you haven't told him it is finished. The Z will be removed with no penalty if Mr. K just hasn't looked at it yet.
- If there is a Z and another comment in addition to the name, something still needs to be corrected -- the Z doesn't get removed until this is completed. At this point, a late penalty will apply.
- At this point, sign hanging must be completed outside of class.
- Many students still need to turn in the Illustrator files for their teacher signs. It there were any problems with the files, the grade will remain a Z until all files are submitted correctly. The comment in the grade book will let you know status.
- Students spent the period in their groups working on the CV Sign Proposal Assignment. This assignment is due 1/30.
- OBJECTIVE: Begin initial design work on the school's new sign.
- Today, students are to place their final (corrected if needed) staff sign .ai files within this Staff Signs Illustrator File Folder.
- Students continued working from the priority list from the last two periods.
- OBJECTIVE: Begin initial design work on the school's new sign.
- Mr. K commented on the First Personal Product Assignments that were turned in last period.
- Students continued working from the priority list from last period.
- OBJECTIVE: Begin initial design work on the school's new sign.
- Today's priorities included the following:
- Hang staff signs. All students were to cut out pieces of paper the size of their signs, place the names of their adult on the paper, and go hang the paper (with blue tape) in the location that their sign will hang (if it hasn't already). As needed, students are to then ask either Mr. K (or Ms. Nelson if your sign is in the main office) about clarifications as needed. In some locations, there should be multiple signs.
- Students continued to hang their signs. Sign hanging (and correction) should be completed by 1/19.
- Complete the top drawings if you haven't yet. There are new templates on your resources page that do not have two tabs -- these won't print the extra sheet every time you print. Use these from now on.
- Students were assigned a group to work within for this CV Sign Proposal Assignment. This assignment will be due 1/30.
- OBJECTIVE: Complete current projects.
- Students will be participating in an extended job shadow with CH2M later. Mr. K inquired how many students could get to CH2M at 8 AM on a Tuesday or Thursday. Mr. K also inquired how many students would then need a ride back to the school after the initial visit.
- Today's priorities included the following:
- Hang staff signs. The signs must be perfect. Any sign with errors must be remade. Signs must be installed level. If they are not level, they need to be rehung. Students can work in groups of 3 as needed. When more than one sign needs to be hung at a room, signs should be spaced 1.5" apart vertically. A vertical straightedge should be used to insure vertical alignment as well. Students who have completed their light shard bases and their top drawings will be given priority for sign hanging.
- Complete light shard bases if you haven't yet. Mr. K needs these now.
- Complete the top drawings if you haven't yet. There are new templates on your resources page that do not have two tabs -- these won't print the extra sheet every time you print. Use these from now on.
- Start developing your product idea. First Personal Product Idea Assignment is due at the beginning of the period on 1/16.
- OBJECTIVE: Complete current projects.
- Students completed this School Sign Survey at the beginning of class. For the next phase of this project, students will work in smaller teams to come up with a complete design for the new school sign, including any concrete footing and electrical system. This survey, in part, will assist Mr. K in forming the teams.
- After this, some students applied Monocoat Oil to the last batch of signs.
- Those not finishing signs worked on hanging up their signs. When installed, students are to let Mr. K know and he will come and grade the installation. The installation must be perfect. The general hanging procedure is as follows:
- Position the sign on the wall in the pre-determined location. Be sure to check for studs -- you want to drill into a portion of the sheetrock that does not have a stud. If you were to hit a stud, we will likely need to move the sign over -- just insure all the holes in the wall are covered.
- Make sure the sign is level (use a level and a second person).
- Either mark the hole location using the sign holder as the template, or have someone hold the sign in place while you drill the pilot holes for the sheetrock anchors.
- Gently hammer the plastic anchors into the holes in the wall.
- Hold the sign in place and attach the sign to the wall using the anchor screws.
- Assemble the sign.
- If the sign must go into some other type of surface (solid wood or masonry), consult with Mr. K.
- Be quiet while you install -- classes will likely be in session.
- As homework -- effective from now until the next class period, students are to maintain a list of problems and/or inconveniences they encounter throughout their day. Each time they identify one, they are to write it down on their list (as well as a solution if one comes to mind). Likely, you won't have solutions for everything you encounter. Products that address these things are likely to sell . . . but some effort must be put forth to identify those opportunities. This list of items is to be turned in next period. Mr. K gave a couple of examples from the list he himself kept for just a day.
- List of daily problems needing solutions (DUE 1/11)
- Complete the School Sign Survey (DUE 1/11)
- OBJECTIVE: Identify ideas for the school's new sign.
- Students reviewed sign ideas as a class.
- OBJECTIVE: Complete current projects.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will know how to apply Moncoat Oil Plus 2C Finish.
- Students applied Monocoat Oil to their finished signs. This was completed as a group.
- When finished, students continued to work on current projects.
- For Thursday, students are to submit an image to Showbie of a sign that could serve as an example for our new school sign. Place this image on a Google Doc. This image can be one you find online, or it can be one you take of an actual sign you see somewhere. Beneath the image, list what it is about this sign that you like and that you feel should be incorporated into the design of our new school sign. These will be shared in class on Thursday.
- Submit a Sign Image as described at left to Showbie (DUE 12/21 by the beginning of class)
- OBJECTIVE: Complete current projects.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to utilize the laser engraver to make items.
- Students worked to complete the tasks laid out for them two periods ago.
- Homework: see the work assigned at right. Note -- we will not be using a pigmented material -- ours will be natural, clear.

- Have no cracks that haven't been fixed or addressed.
- Have no large chips.
- Have no large gouges.
- Have all surfaces sanded.
- Have all edges chamfered (with a hand plane).
- Have the screws installed.
- Have the sign in place.
- Priority #3: When done with these two things, students should complete their two light shard bases (if they haven't already).
- Priority #4: Students can then work on plastic A Solidworks drawing of their top is due by 12/15. Drawings should comply with all of the standards and instructions as posted on the Safety Page.
- Students ready to turn their tops were given a lesson on the wood lathes.
- Teacher Signs engraved and final sanding / touch-up completed. (DUE 12/15)

- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to cut contours and pockets using both the Davinci and Forest Scientific CNC Routers.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to utilize the laser engraver to make items.
- Students were warned that the engraving spacing needs to be just right -- if it doesn't look good, you will have to redo it.
