- Plastic recycling was introduced. Students were introduced to the Top of the World Project. Plastic gathering for your blank is a priority, but otherwise the other two projects should be considered a higher priority.
- The process for creating toolpaths in Mastercam, as well as the procedures for using both types of CNC (the DaVinci's and the Forest Scientific) routers were reviewed. For reminders, go to the CVHS Safety page -- feed rate calculations and instructions for simple contours and pockets can be found on the pages for either the Techno DaVinci routers, or the Forest Scientific CNC router.
- All students are to complete the CNC milling of two light shard bases for his STEAM classes. To facilitate things, Mr. K has provided two files linked below that are ready for use -- one uses a 1/4" diameter tool on the Forest Scientific to cut out the cavity of the base; the second file cuts the slot using a 1/8" end mill and one of the Techno DaVinci routers. Before using a Davinci router, please watch the router video on the router safety page. Instructions for using the Forest Scientific are located on its safety page -- please read through them first before trying to use the router. That said, they are complete, and therefore long. Mr. K will try to be there to assist you when you use the Forest Scientific router.
- Light Shard Cavity file for use on the Forest Scientific CNC router.
- Light Shard Slit file for use on the Techno DaVinci CNC routers.
- Students were given three projects: STEAM light shard bases (two a piece), school signs, and plastic recycling. These projects are intended to re-familiarize students with equipment in the shop for use in later projects. When possible, work on the project of highest priority first. That said, not everyone can do the same thing all at once. Be productive in class at all times.
- Contact the assigned four adults for the sign project, and obtain the information required for their sign: name, department/position, favorite quote (and author), graphic, and the year they began at CV. (DUE 10/5)
- (1st Priority) The completion of two light shard bases (DUE TBA)
- (2nd Priority) Gather your required HPDE for the Top of the World Project (DUE TBA)
- (3rd Priority) The completion of four CV signs (DUE TBA)
- (4th Priority) Top of the World Project (DUE TBA)
- OBJECTIVE: Students will become knowledgeable of the key concepts to project management.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to utilize the laser engraver to make items.
- Students were divided into three groups.
- Each group was charge with reviewing individual designs, and either picking the best design from the group, or a new design derived from one or more individual's designs.
- Midway through the class, each group shared their design with the other two groups. Then, the class voted for the design that seemed like the best idea. Mr. K retained veto power, and only used it if absolutely necessary.
- Once a final design was established students were assigned four adults. Students will be responsible for an installed sign for each of their adults.
- Email Mr. K with the name of any teachers/adults you would like to have as someone you will be making a sign for. First come, first served.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to safely utilize the chop saw, table saw, jointer, and the planer.
- Students continued to mill clock blanks.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to safely utilize the chop saw, table saw, jointer, and the planer.
- Students were tasked with producing 110 pieces of jointed, planed, and squared wood that were 7"x7" (or thereabouts). This will be a good way to utilize the new pieces of equipment we h ave reviewed. These pieces of wood will be used by the IDEA classes to make CNC-ed clocks. Students should utilize available wood in the off-cut cabinets, the alder pile, and the pile behind the south table saw. Each piece should be square and flat. Each student should process four pieces, and each student should do each of the process steps themselves. In other words, no one should do all of the jointing..
- Produce four clock blanks (using the chop saw, jointer, planer, and table saw as needed). (DUE 9/26)
- OBJECTIVE: Students will master the safety practices of the table saws, the chop saw, the jointer, and the planer, and know how to utilize this equipment in preparing material for projects.
- Students were allowed to cut some wood on the chop saw.
- Students completed the chop saw safety test.
- As time allowed, safety demonstrations were completed on the jointer and the planer.

- Students were given a brief introduction to the class.
- Students with safety glasses from previous classes or at home were asked to bring them with them on Thursday.
- Students then logged into one of the new Chromebook laptops and followed the first half of these Setting Up Computer and Device Access Instructions (the Chromebook portion).
- Students were then asked to brainstorm ideas for a new school sign. Each student is to complete a sketch of a possible sign idea. The design sketch should:
- include a means of including something to represent each department in the school (a carved totem for instance) in a fashion that would facilitate changing totems in the future.
- include enough construction details so that it is clear how you intend to put the sign together (it is okay if your idea isn't the most practical at this point, but clearly communicate, via pictures and/or words, what your thoughts for construction were).
- limit the maintenance and upkeep required (consider materials for instance).
- minimize the impact to landscape maintenance.
- include considerations so parts and pieces can easily be changed out and replaced as needed in the future (as things weather, become damaged, etc...).
- be stand-alone. If you want illuminated lettering . . . how might a locally installed solar panel power what is needed as opposed to running power out to the sign from the building?
- Complete a hand sketch of one design for a new school design. (DUE 9/7)
- Complete this Initial Class Survey. (DUE 9/7)
- Read the Class Contract, print off the last page, and return it (signed by both student and parent). (DUE 9/7)
- Bring safety glasses to class if you have them from last year. (DUE 9/7)
- OBJECTIVE: Complete current projects.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to utilize the laser engraver to make items.
- Students applied finish to their teacher signs. This was done as a class.
