This page explains what it means if a student is placed on College Credit Plus Probation or College Credit Plus Dismissal in the state of Ohio. It’s written for both students and parents to help you understand what happens, why it happens, and what steps to take next.
A student is placed on CCP Probation if either of the following happens:
The student’s college GPA falls below 2.0 (C average) for their CCP courses.
OR
The student withdraws from or fails to earn credit for two or more courses in one college term (for example, they drop or fail two classes in a semester).
🔻 What Is CCP Dismissal?
A student is placed on CCP Dismissal when:
They remain underperforming after their probation term (still below 2.0 GPA),
OR
They are considered underperforming for two consecutive terms.
While on CCP Probation:
The student may take only one CCP course during the next college term.
The student cannot take a class in the same subject where they previously earned a D, F, or no credit (unless an appeal is approved).
If the student’s college GPA improves to 2.0 or higher after the probation term, they return to good standing and can take CCP courses normally again.
If the student’s college GPA stays below 2.0, they move to CCP Dismissal.
While on CCP Dismissal:
The student may not take any CCP courses during the next college term.
If the student has already registered for classes, they must drop them right away to avoid being billed for tuition or fees.
The school counselor will notify the student, parent, and college when the dismissal goes into effect.
CCP Probation and Dismissal rules apply only to College Credit Plus participation.
The college itself may have separate academic rules that also apply.
Students can still take regular high school courses while on CCP Probation or Dismissal.
Schools are required by the state to notify both students and parents in writing if a student is placed on probation or dismissal.
Students and parents have the right to appeal a CCP Probation or Dismissal decision.
To appeal:
Read the notice carefully. It will include a reason for the status and how to appeal.
Submit your appeal within the deadline listed in the letter (many districts require it within 5 business days).
Explain any extenuating circumstances, such as:
Illness or hospitalization
Family emergency
Verified technical or registration errors
Other serious, documented issues
Attach supporting documents (doctor’s note, counselor statement, etc.).
Send the appeal to the person listed in your school’s CCP notice, such as the CCP Coordinator or Principal.
Keep copies of grades and communications from the college each term.
Encourage your student to meet with instructors early if they’re struggling -
Students can vist the college instructor office hours, contact by email or phone, request virtual meeting or phone call meeting. Instructor contact can be found in their syllabus & college portals.
Ask the college advisor about tutoring or academic supports. All colleges allow CCP students to access tutoring through their college.
Stay proactive — catching problems & communicating with instructors early can prevent probation
