As a dietitian, I recommend and support incorporating more whole-plant foods into all my client’s diets. With a focus on honoring the body, I help others transform their diet by incorporating behavior change strategies and personalized techniques. Many of my clients have lost weight, are no longer diabetic, and have dramatic improvements in their health.
In addition to federal food and nutrition policy (e.g., Dietary Guidelines), I am active in environmental advocacy, connecting agricultural and land use policies to human and planetary health. For example, I use environmental impact and other reports to highlight cattle grazing degradation of public lands, and in communications with agencies (e.g., comments on management plans), link these activities to the negative effects on human health, global climate change, decreased biodiversity, and increased competition of resources with wildlife.
The high-quality science, overarching fields, and reputable, stellar authors involved in the Commission’s work are a powerful source of information. I use it as evidence and cite it often.
Progress:
Clients report their dietary transformations and health improvements
Many of the public comments I submitted to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans were addressed at the public meetings, suggesting that my voice was heard!
People seeking to improve their health with help from a dietitian
Policymakers, especially organizations that affect food and nutrition policy
Government agencies and organizations that have the power to determine land use and agricultural practices and policies
For clients, reducing barriers, such as perceived affordability, palatability, convenience, and dietary pattern labels (e.g., vegan) is often key to taking action
For policymakers: I find using storytelling to open the conversation and facilitate connection to common values and supporting possible solutions with science works well.
Find tools/ organize information to share and use (e.g., online quick dietary self-assessments for clients, influencers that are plant-based and science-driven, visuals and citations to support policy activities)
Discover opportunities to align environmental advocacy and land use policies with impacts on human diets and planetary health
