We have developed specific learning modules for medical schools in the UK on healthy sustainable diets, using the Planetary Health Diet.
In the UK, 10% of the medical school curriculum can be selected by the student. This means that Universities work with non profit and third sector organisations to provide a range of educational offerings. We offer a module called ‘cooking for the climate’ which teaches students culinary medicine. We share knowledge and cooking skills required to implement a plant-based diet for their personal lives and for supporting their future patients to embrace a plant-based diet.
We use a blended learning approach with online self-directed learning, live online lectures and discussions and live online cook-alongs. The delivery is by a range of professionals, including family doctors, dietitians, nutritionists and lifestyle medicine physicians.
We have been teaching this for 4 years. We are now in 7 medical schools with plans to expand into more as time and resource allows.
The planetary health diet forms the basis of the teaching for medical students.
University educators and medical students
Medical students are eager to learn about ‘food as medicine’ and thoroughly enjoy learning to create healthy plant-based dishes.
Continue to engage with medical schools to incorporate our resources and courses into their curricula
