Developed the 4D model for sustainable diets to share with healthcare professionals. This model identifies the main pillars (sociocultural, planetary, nutrition, economic) that should be considered when advocating for sustainable diets. Health professionals are trusted when it comes to providing diet information to consumers; thus, this model is useful for communicating key factors within sustainable diet choices for consumers, clients, and communities. Each dimension has subcategories that help further define sustainable diet considerations. This open access framework has been utilized in multiple webinars, curricula, conference sessions, publications, and toolkits since 2020. Each dimension has been linked with resources and evidence-based information in a library at FoodandPlanet.org

The principles of the 4 D model for sustainable diets align with EAT Lancet Commission’s recommendations.
This serves as a simple framework that can be easily incorporated into education models by a variety of health care professionals, as well as those working in the food system.
We identified that health care professionals were ready for an advanced framework that included deeper evidence-based information on each dimension of sustainability. We are currently working on developing this more layered, updated resource for health care professionals. Health care professionals repeatedly report that they need practical application strategies for incorporating sustainable diet education in their practice settings.
