Pathways to Dairy Net Zero Initiative
Pathways to Dairy Net Zero Initiative
Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) demonstrates the global dairy sector’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions while continuing to produce nutritious foods for six billion people and provide for the livelihoods of one billion people.
P2DNZ was launched in September 2021 to accelerate climate efforts already underway and drive further necessary action to reduce dairy’s emissions over the next decades. Eleven of the top 20 dairy companies in the world as well as major dairy industry associations provided their support at launch, and today, over 250 major organizations support the initiative. It is led by Global Dairy Platform (GDP), in conjunction with the Dairy Sustainability Framework, International Dairy Federation, Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform, International Livestock Research Institute, and IFCN Dairy Research Network. The Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases is a knowledge partner and UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supports the initiative.
What sets P2DNZ apart from other industry initiatives is its focus on tangible results and real-world impact through task forces and projects that benefit the sector in both mature dairy regions and emerging economies alike.

Plus, over 250 companies, associations, academics and governments who support P2DNZ
In a world challenged by climate change, the dairy sector continues to prioritize environmental progress while producing nutrient-dense food and generating positive socio-economic impact. About 6 billion people benefit from the vital nutrition that dairy provides, while nearly 1 billion individuals rely on the sector for their livelihoods. This dual responsibility—to feed and to sustain—drives our sector’s collective action toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The sector helps to ensure continued progress through P2DNZ, which demonstrates action taken by dairy on climate change, with efforts that encompass both developed markets, where the emphasis is on how dairy companies can lessen environmental impact through initiatives such as improved animal nutrition and in dairy processing facilities; and in emerging dairy economies, where investment is vital to transform the dairy sector to improve nutrition accessibility, build socio-economic growth and address issues of adaptation and mitigation.
P2DNZ is focused on progress around the globe. In emerging markets, which are responsible for about 80% of dairy sector emissions, investment is crucial to transforming the sector in a holistic way, though enhancing nutrition accessibility, fostering socio-economic growth, and reducing emissions.
Developed countries: Work with the sector through multiple P2DNZ workstreams, including GHG Accounting, Dairy Processing and Animal Nutrition
Emerging economies: Continue projects that focus on environmental progress, including Dairy Nourishes Africa and the Dairy Interventions for Adaptation and Mitigation (DaIMA) East Africa project, recently approved by the Green Climate Fund.
