The ‘Food4All’ project began in London at the end of 2023. The cost of living crisis in London meant that many people living on the poverty line were struggling to afford and/or access healthy and nutritious food. A group of young professionals part of the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Community decided to take action by establishing community fridges in underserved areas in London. These fridges would be run in partnership with community centres and The Felix Project (a charity collecting and redistributing unsold food from supermarkets). Our fridges enable those in need to freely collect nutritious food with dignity that would otherwise have gone to waste. In the summer of 2024, we also developed a nutrition and financial literacy workshop for primary school children, aiming to increase food literacy for young people.
Through our nutrition x financial literacy workshop, we have incorporated educational content and visuals around a sustainable diet, with a focus on plant-based foods for the children. This content has been reviewed and approved by certified nutritionists.
The community fridge component of our project is supporting reduction of food waste at the consumer stage of the value chain through ensuring more rescued and redistributed surplus food is not thrown away.
Progress has been measured through the number of additional hot meals that have been prepared for those in need at the community centres where we have provided the fridges, as well as kg of food rescued for the fridges. We have also delivered the workshops to 120+ primary school students.
Project lead and members: Belinda Ng (project co-lead- partnerships and strategy), Isaac Kalonji (project co-lead, funder relations) and 5 other young professionals from the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Network- London Hub II.

When trying to create impact, really take the time to listen and engage with stakeholders in the community to understand what the needs are – this is how the idea for an integrated financial literacy and nutrition workshop came about.
Also, taking the time to understand the context and existing interventions help – our main impact has come from supporting the existing ecosystem of community fridges.
Setting up more community fridges in partnership with community centres- we’ll need more funding for the purchasing of the fridges
Scaling the delivery of our nutrition x financial literacy programme to more primary schools and community centres in London – partnerships and outreach will be crucial for this
