Risk is an important part of any decision-making process and surely for a larger company with complex value chains. Risk helps us understand status quo and creates a basis for making informed choices. If we get more people involved, we will have better discussions.
But how do we assess risk across the entire value chain?
In the spring of 2024, Strawberry took the initiative to develop a checklist based on the UNDP Guide for Enhanced Due Diligence Assessments. The checklist consists of 10 points. Enhanced due diligence assessments are more comprehensive than regular due diligence assessments as they require a deeper understanding of the risk. In addition, it assesses the company's activities and whether these contribute to maintaining or exacerbating the risk.
A checklist does not undermine the complexity, but rather helps to clarify the steps required. If you understand what to do, you get started faster and close the gap between theory and practice.
After compiling the 10 points, we launched a proposal to get started. In addition, we made sure to get a lot of good input from a lot of smart people.
This has resulted in us now having a useful methodology for enhanced due diligence assessments, changed the behavior of our suppliers, had three roundtables with 25 stakeholders and not least good discussions with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Norwegian and Swedish NGOs
Business society (Equinor, KLP 30 different companies)
Human rights lawyers
Results: Amount of companies trained on the checklist, 30 (and counting).
Risk assessments are very complex and there is a shortcoming of knowledge among the business society on heightened due diligence.
Expand due diligence training and roundtable discussions (next in Oslo and Stockholm).
