Student Based Project

What is an SBP?

Student Based Learning (SBP) is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

SBPs bring authenticity to the classroom in that the problem is easily connected to the world outside of the classroom, and students are challenged to collaborate, communicate and think critically as they approach the problem. These skills are directly related to Global Competencies and Transferable Skills. Embedded in any good project are a solid set of language based skills (e.g. research, writing a paper, putting together a presentation, etc.), as well as any other subject-related expectations that you choose to include (Math, Geography, History, etc.)

What is my SBP?

My SBP explains how to write in all four writing styles (expository, descriptive, narrative, persuasive) to a less complex level so those who want to write an expository essay, can learn how to do it.

What was your thinking process?

Writing all of these pages was not an easy task and my final product was much more different than what I currently have now.

At the start of writing my SBP, I thought creating a survey of what people struggle with when writing in certain styles would help me streamline what I need to focus on as my project progresses. However, I ultimately decided to drop this idea because I grew to realize that it was irrelevant to my research. It's a good reminder to know how to write in these four writing styles, and as a personal challenge to myself to improve my writing skill.

Are you proud with what you've done?

After working on my SBP for the past month, I started to really see some improvement in my writing, albeit not that much. I still improved and also learned some new tricks whenever I am writing these kinds of essays. It was a stressful journey, stemming from a simple idea to help others and myself write to having that idea turn into reality. There are many things that need improvement on to become a better writer, but this project is merely a stepping stone for self-improvement in writing so I'll be able to reach that dream of writing professionally.
