Identifying my global-local engagement component related to my animating question.
Organization: Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute
Position/Role: Undergraduate Research Intern
Time Frame: 10-weeks during Summer 2024; work extended for Fall 2024
I'm fortunate to be accepted into Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Insitute's Summer Undergraduate Research Program (CMU HCII). Human-computer interaction is a field I want to explore because of the multidisciplinary focus it has on bridging technology and humans to benefit one another. I'm researching with Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow, Carl C. Hayness-Magyar, and his work on Codespec, a self-directed learning environment for computer programming practice that scaffolds the development of programming skills. Codespec aims to support learners, instructors, and researchers by providing help-seeking features, generating multimodal learning analytics, and cultivating IDEAS+: inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, sexual orientation, gender awareness, and justice.
A side quest I did during the summer was to put together a Summer Recap presentation that is played during our poster presentations. I also took some of these photos with my digi. This just showcases how much fun I had for the summer with my REU cohort – people who come from different educational backgrounds and experiences but working with HCI in mind.
It's important to highlight other engagements that have contributed to my understanding of the pathway and how it contributes to The Work I want to pursue. Anything underlined is hyperlinks that you can get more information on! Here's a few I decided to highlight :)
Morton Schapiro Northwestern Academy for Chicago Public Schools is a college-prep program hosted by Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy (SESP). As a scholar in the program during high school, I return back as an alumn during the Summer 2023 & Summer 2024 terms. I learned how to develop curriculum and provided academic and college support to 65+ BIPOC & FGLI (first generation, low-income) students from Chicago Public Schools!
During Spring Break 2024, I attended my first hackathon: The Hack for Accessibility Hackathon/Ideathon. It is hosted by Code Your Dreams and Deaf Kids Code, sponsored by Fetch, ISACA Chicago Chapter, GitHub, and Discovery Partners Institute at the Google Chicago office. I intersected everything I know through this event from my academic interests and extracurricular passions relating to DEI & to address accessibility and inclusivity through technology.
As one of the Co-Chairs for Asian Students in Action (ASIA), our Executive Board revamped ConversASIANS for Asian American Pacific Islander Month, which focuses on having a space for Asian-identifying students to discuss cultural, political, social, and academic issues that concern Asian-identifying students. One of the topics we facilitated is Asian Activism. We partnered with the Center for the Critical Study of Race & Ethnicity and Race & Ethnicity Programs, along with other student organizations.

During the 2022-2023 Academic Year, I was a Community Engagement Communications & Marketing Fellow for Race & Ethnicity Programs, where my job is to promote programming and events from the Division of Institutional Equity and Inclusion. I had to analyze data from subscribers from our newsletters and from our social media pages. Institutional work is important to me and I believe every student must take advantage of those resources, especially with the focus of DEI work.
