Shreyas and Marcus were approached by Dr. Tong with the idea of using drones to lift banners at the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Shreyas and Marcus had less than 48 hours to perfect a system by which the banners could be lifted, and sprung into action. Immediately, they began planning, dividing & engineering the solution.
They started by researching the maximum weight liftable by the drones, a Mavic Pro and a Phantom 3A. It turned out to be 100g for the Mavic, and 200g for the Phantom. The show was a great success, a piloting job well done.
After confirming that the weight of the poster board was not too heavy, they devised a system consisting of dual lines of fishing wire strung by a zip tie attached to the underbelly of the drone and wrapping around near the battery area, and connecting to holes punched in the posterboard and reinforced with tape.
Marcus & Shreyas both came into school that day, ready for a day of adventure. They were ready, for the big show. Within 48 hours, they had successfully created banners, for 2 drones. As the school gathered, for the Christmas Tree Lighting, the seasoned pilots took to the skies, and expertly piloted over the faces of rejoiced children, screaming with excitement!
The show was a great success, Christmas wishes hovering overhead. A piloting job well done. Concordia is looking at having Marcus and Shreyas do a flyby again. What awaits for 2021? We'll have to see!
