CRAFT Framework: The CRAFT framework is a structured approach to writing effective AI prompts that helps you get better, more consistent results from AI tools. CRAFT is an acronym that stands for five key elements:
C- CONTEXT
Provide background information and set the scene.
Who are you?
What's the situation?
What subject, grade level or audience is involved?
R - ROLE
Define the role you want the chatbot to take on
Should it act as a curriculum designer, writing coach, subject expert, or something else?
This will help the chatbot to understand the perspective and expertise level to use.
A - ACTION
Clearly state what you want the chatbot to do.
Be specific about the task.
Use action verbs (create, design, explain, revise, generate...)
F -FORMAT
Specify how you want the output structured.
Bullet points, paragraphs, step-by-step instructions
Identify any specific sections or organization you need.
T - TARGET
Identify the intended audience and any constraints.
Who will use this output?
Reading level, time limits, materials availiable, standards alignment needed?
Quick Tips:
You don't always need every element - use what fits your task best.
The more specific you are, the better the results
If in doubt - ask the chat bot to ASK YOU three clarifying questions... it will HELP you build a stronger prompt.
Example: I'm a 7th-grade science teacher preparing a unit on ecosystems for students with mixed ability levels (Context). Act as an experienced middle school science curriculum specialist (Role). Create a 5-day lesson plan with hands-on activities and formative assessments (Action). Present it as a table with columns for Day, Learning Objective, Activity, and Assessment (Format). The activities should require only basic classroom supplies and take no more than 45 minutes each (Target).
