Music enthusiasts need a customizable way to enhance their shared audio experiences.
Our team has identified a compelling need in the music consumption space, specifically addressing how the rise of audio streaming services has transformed music listening from a shared, communal experience into a predominantly individual activity. While streaming platforms have revolutionized access to music, they have diminished the social and collaborative aspects that historically made music enjoyment so meaningful. Our specific focus is on creating a product that reintroduces and enhances the customizable sharing experience of music for modern listeners.
We selected this need because it represents a significant gap in the current music consumption landscape. Despite the tremendous advances in music technology and accessibility, the loss of shared musical experiences represents a step backward in how people connect through music. This need area offers an opportunity to bridge the convenience of modern streaming with the rich social traditions of music sharing.
Our target user group consists of music enthusiasts who value both high-quality audio experiences and social connections through music. Through interviews, several key themes emerged regarding their priorities and pain points. Users consistently emphasized their desire for customization options and the ability to maintain mindfulness of their surroundings. They also expressed strong concerns about both the cost and quality of their audio experiences, indicating that any solution must balance premium features with accessibility.
There is meaningful demand for solutions that enhance the social aspects of music consumption. The global music streaming market continues to grow rapidly. However, the lack of meaningful social features creates an intriguing opportunity for innovation. The effects of not addressing this need leave future innovations in the hands of streaming companies that are stepping ever closer to social media companies. Meaningful sharing impacts cultural exchange, emotional connection, and community building through shared musical experiences.
Based on our research and user insights, we have formulated our need statement: "Music enthusiasts need a customizable way to enhance their audio experience." This statement encapsulates both the practical and social aspects of our intended solution while remaining open to various innovative approaches as we progress through the design process.

What's new: We have further narrowed our focus from general music enthusiasts to the concert scene, focusing on bands and promoters trying to market our product to a secondary market of concert goers. This has mostly affected how the product will be marketed and distributed, rather than the functionality of the product.
Uncertainties: We are still uncertain as to what the initial product shape will be. In an ideal world we would be able to injection mold multiple different shapes depending on demand, but tooling costs would be preventative for an actual start-up. We plan on continuing our interviews and asking more about the specific product design.
Artists and event organizers need a physical artifact that serves as both a commemorative item and a shareable gateway, fostering community through the exchange of musical experiences.
