We will ask you to share a bio and photo, some information about your PD project(s), and do a bit of reading to give us all some common ground. See the Checklist for details.
Wednesday 11/6 will feature...
Sessions start 4 pm - buffet dinner 6 pm - dessert and posters end 9 pm (informal socializing after)
- Welcome and overview of IBL workshops in math - Stan Yoshinobu, director of the Academy of Inquiry Based Learning (AIBL)
- What role does professional development play in changing instruction? - Sandra Laursen, CU Boulder
- Networking dinner: Who's here?
- Structured poster session* and gallery walk: What PD models do we work on? What features are important?
*Note: No need to prepare a poster for this session. We will send a template for you to complete describing your project and we will prepare poster-sized printouts to arrange around the room. Feel free to bring project schwag to share!
Thursday 11/7 will feature...
breakfast 7:30 am - sessions start 8:30 am - lunch 12:30 pm - end 5:30 pm
- Breakout discussions & reports-back: Strategies we use in PD, challenges we face, needs we notice, ideas we have for the future
- Crowd-sourcing of notes from the sessions
- Measurement challenges in studying outcomes of PD - Tim Weston & Tim Archie, CU Boulder
- Whole group discussion to prioritize topics for Friday
- Networking breakfast and lunch, dinner on your own
Friday 11/8 will feature...
breakfast 7:30 am - session starts 8:30 am - box lunches available from 10:30 am - end 12 pm
- Breakout discussion & report-back, with crowd-sourcing of notes
- Whole group discussion to summarize and identify points of consensus
- Networking breakfast, box lunch for travel or picnic
So that these conversations have lasting value, the notes from the sessions, and your contributions describing your PD projects, will be used to develop a white paper about discipline-based professional development in STEM higher education. It's possible we'll contact you to fill in some details about your work or your comments.
