March, April and May Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

We are so excited to be offering Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as a special this school year! During the months of March, April and May we will be talking about executive functioning skills, self-confidence, relationship skills and our Core Virtues of compassion, forgiveness and diligence! Please see below for some ideas about how you can continue your child's social and emotional learning at home!

  1. Allow your student to help set daily schedules/routines, plan trips and outings and prepare their backpacks and other school items to help improve their organization and planning skills.

  2. Help your student improve their relationship skills by encouraging perspective taking, empathy, practicing problem solving and listening skills.

  3. The following are SEL books that can be read at home about the SEL topics we are covering in March, April and May. Books about executive functioning skills include "Your Fantastic Elastic Brain" by JoAnn Deak and "The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room" by Stan and Jan Berenstain. Books about Self-Confidence include "I am Enough" by Grace Byers and "I Like Me" by Nancy Carlson. Books about relationships and friendships include "Enemy Pie" by Derek Munson and "My Friend is Sad" by Mo Willems.

  4. Talk about examples of compassion, forgiveness and diligence that you see in books, movies, TV shows and in the community.
