Homework for Writing Workshop 7 will help extend skills learned during class and will adhere to the school policy. Students will never receive busy work from me for homework; I'd rather them have time to spend with you as a family or read a book.
Most of the time, homework will involve videos previewing the next lesson's focus, long-term activities such as the Article of the Week assignment, revising essays, and redoing assignments as needed. In addition, students will need to complete assignments at home if they are not finished during class. For example, students in Writing Workshop 7 who need extra time to complete the introductory paragraph for an essay we worked on in class will be asked to complete the task at home.
Life happens and we can’t always meet deadlines. Just like people get a grace period when missing a loan payment, students get one for missing assignment deadlines. Furthermore, I want to ensure kids learn and master necessary skills. Completing the work so I can provide accurate feedback is essential to achieving that goal. However, there are a few caveats:
Students may need to have a parent/guardian sign a form indicating they are aware that you are turning in an assignment late along with a reason.
On the form, the student must reflect on why the assignment is late.
When turning in the third late assignment in a marking period, the student must explain how he/she will work to change his/her habits and turn work in on time.
Work must be submitted within one week.* After that, the student will receive a 50 that will remain in the grade book. Waiting to turn in a bunch of work at the end of a marking period is not an option. Learning and mastering a marking period's worth of skills in one week is simply not feasible.
*The only exception will be assignments that count for a significant grade. However, a final date to turn it in will still be given.
