DRAFT LANGUAGE FOR AMENDMENTS TO EXISITING POLICY
GENERATIVE AI POLICY STARTER KIT FOR K-12
Because genAI is so new, districts are unlikely to have existing policies that explicitly support/encourage its use. However, many may find that existing policies already cover all or most key concerns that may arise from use of genAI. These concerns typically relate to:
Plagiarism/cheating (typically addressed in a school handbook or academic integrity code)
Data privacy and safety (typically addressed in an acceptable use policy of acceptable use guidelines)
Harassment/bullying (typically addressed in various policies/guidelines, including AUP and codes of conduct)
If needed, districts may consider adding to these policies with language that broadens their scope to include genAI. Here is an example:
Use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) are emerging as important components of the digital information and technology landscape, and the Glitterville Schools see their use as strongly connected to a students’ development as digitally literate citizens. Such tools are subject to all of the expectations and requirements contained in this and other district policy and guidance statements. In addition to adherence to such policies/guidelines, instructional uses of generative AI should be governed by educators’ professional judgment and all relevant codes of safe, ethical, and responsible digital conduct.
