UNIT 4: INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES

FIRST INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: stage in the evolution of industry characterised by the emergence of large-scale industrial manufacturing.

HEAVY INDUSTRY: the manufacture of large, heavy articles and materials in bulk.

INDUSTRY: economic activity taht produces products in large quantities. There are heavy industry, semi-heavy industry and light industry.

LIGHT INDUSTRY: manufacturing normally less capital intensive than heavy industry, and is more oriented towards the final consumer than towards intermediate consumption by other enterprises.

MANUFACTURE: the making of articles on a large scale using machinery.

SECOND INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: stage in the evolution of industry characterised by mass production, improvement in efficiency and new energy sources.

THIRD INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: stage in the evolution of industry characterised by more technology and less labour.
