Nickerson

The first settlers to own the land surrounding the Holce Trailhead were E.E. Nickerson and Lad Lupien.

E.E. (Everett Elmer) Nickerson came to Oregon on a job and liked it and sent for his wife Marinda "Minnie" (Rolo).  They arrived in Vernonia on November 19, 1899, and stayed until at least 1913.  They acquired the property in 1890. The couple worked at several jobs including operating the first hotel in Vernonia.  They worked as flunkies (kitchen and dining hall workers) at the Benson logging camp, and promoted a "Model Farm" on another parcel they purchased near the Nehalem River.  In the early 1900s and into the 1930s Model Farms were established to teach new farming methods.  E.E. owned the first car in Columbia County, and started the first telephone company with his neighbor, Olaf Malmstem.  In 1907 it was combined with other lines to form the Nehalem Telephone Company.  He served as a city marshal and school director.  By 1915 the Nickersons had moved from the Nehalem Valley to Cornelius, Oregon.
