In ADAPT, a course is a container for your learning content, such as quizzes and other learning materials. When you first log into ADAPT, you will be brought to the "My Courses" screen. If your account already has courses that are associated with it, you will see them listed there.
Log in to ADAPT.
On the "My Courses" screen, click on the "New Course" button.
School: For WTCS faculty, it is important that you specify your institution by selecting it from the list that is given. Doing this will allow the content you create to communicate with your institution's LMS.
Enter the course name. (this can be whatever you want, though a good best practice is for it to be the same name used by your institution's LMS.)
Public and private descriptions are optional fields. Public description will be visible to your students, so this is a good place to specify the purpose of ADAPT for your course from their perspective. Private description is something only you will see, and as such, can be useful for your own organizational purposes.
Textbook URL is an optional field that is only used if the content you are authoring is part of an online textbook.
Modality: "Tradtional" should be the default in most cases if you plan to use the content you develop as part of a course you teach. "Formative" is an option used when sharing content publicly as practice materials. "Anonymous Users" is an option used to share content publicly, but users will not be able to see correct answers or feedback.
Indicate a section. (this can be a copy & paste of the course name from your LMS.)
Indicate a CRN. (this can be a copy & paste of the course name from your LMS.)
Indicate a term. (i.e. "Spring 2023")
Indicate the course start and end dates. If you plan to use this content in your course, make sure the dates mimic this timeframe.
Choose whether the course should be public. Public courses are made available to other instructors in the ADAPT platform to import. Note that making a course public does not give students access to view the materials. It is purely for other instructors in the ADAPT platform.
Alpha serves a similar functionality to Canvas's Blueprint course functionality. In most cases, you can leave this as "No".
Indicate whether this course will be connected via LTI to your institution's LMS. This determines where student grading information is stored.
Click on "Save" to create the new course.
Once your course is created, you are ready to add an assignment to it. In ADAPT, "assignment" is the term used to describe the container in which your questions will be delivered to students.
Log in to your ADAPT account and access the course you want to create the assignment in.
Once you're in the course, click on "New Assignment" at the top of the screen.
Enter a name for the assignment. If this is an assignment that only you plan to use, you can provide a name that makes sense within your instructional context. If, however, you plan to share this content with other instructors in ADAPT, consider using a name that would mean something to other instructors (i.e. Avoid names like "Week 5 Case Study" if you plan to share with other instructors).
Add a public description to give your learners more information about the assignment. This is where you can provide overall instructions or any other relevant information.
Add a private description if you want to include any notes or information that only you will see.
Set Modality for Formative or Summative. Summative should be your default choice if you plan to use content in your course. Formative is only used when sharing content publicly and tracking of progress and grades is not needed.
Specify an assignment group for this assignment. You can choose an existing group or create a new one. Note that this choice does not carry over to assignment groups in your LMS. It is purely for organization within ADAPT.
Select the Scoring Type is "Performance" or "Completion." If you want to track detailed learner performance, choose "Performance."
Choose the "Points per Question" option to set how you want to award points. You can either set a specific value for each question or choose to give points based on the overall assignment score. Note that if you connect your assignment to your LMS, the points you allocate in your LMS will override this choice.
Set the "Default Points per Question Value" based on your preference.
Select the Assessment Type as "Real-time Graded Assessments" for Next Gen NCLEX question types.
Choose the "Number of Allowed Attempts." You can select up to an unlimited number of attempts or set a specific limit.
Decide whether you want learners to view hints while attempting the quiz. If not, leave it unchecked.
Set the Solutions Availability to "Automatically available." This will allow learners to see the correct answer immediately after submitting their response.
Skip the "Algorithmic" option as it's not applicable.
If you want to incorporate a late policy, select the appropriate option. Keep in mind that this is only for scoring within ADAPT and does not carry over to your LMS.
Decide whether you want to include this assignment in the final score. Keep in mind that this is only for scoring within ADAPT and does not carry over to your LMS.
Leave Randomizations set to "No." This is because Next Gen NCLEX questions build upon previous steps, and shuffling questions is not recommended.
Leave Notifications off.
Set the Assigned to option to "Everybody."
Set the due date and availability date for the assignment. It is recommended that these dates match whatever dates you use in your LMS, if applicable.
Click on "Save" to create the assignment.
