To understand the values, characters, or themes of a literary work, sometimes it is important to understand the author. Biographical information provides insights into authors' lives and achievements.
Where did the author grow up?
Are there values or cultural traditions associated with that region that may be seen in the author's work?
In what time period did the author live?
Were there social issues or historical events that may have shaped the author's perspective?
What was the author's childhood life like?
Are there psychological issues the author may have faced due to the structure of the author's childhood? Health isues? What did the family value.
Where was the author educated?
Did the author go to college? Was education valued in the author's family?Did the author travel extensively?
What was the author's adulthood like?
What kind of jobs did the author hold? Did the author have a spouse or children?
You might even find some interesting information in an obituary if your author is one who has already died. Do they have social media? The point is to try to gain an understanding of who your author was / is. What interests/hobbies, life events, influences were a part of who made your author the type of person the author was/is?
Step 1: RESEARCH
You will need to research your author’s life and find at least 4 reputable sources. Look at:
the reference section of Wikipedia
the Library’s Gale Literature Resource Center database for help with sources
Google Scholar
Biographies, memoirs, autobiographies
Social Media
Publisher page
This is an appropriate opportunity to use AI; you can ask it for help finding your sources.
Step 2: NOTE TAKING
As you gather information about the author, work towards establishing connections between their life experiences and writing. You will need to include specific details regarding family, education, culture,and other influential elements of the author’s life. Take notes on major facts and summarize information on the KWO Outline. You will take notes on a KWO (key word outline) indicating major facts and summarizing information When you write the essay, you should write from your notes to help you avoid accidental plagiarism.
Step 3: WRITING
Use section headings to organize your writing and use turnitin.com to help you make sure you are summarizing and putting the information in your own words. Look back at the Academic Integrity Philosophy in our syllabus for help. Remember your purpose! Someone should be able to read this page and have an overall impression of what your author’s life was/is like and how it has influenced their writing. You will need to write a minimum of 800 words.Cite your sources for the information you gather even if it is at the end of sections.
Bibliography
Make sure to post any resources you used in MLA format on the bibliography page. Mybib.com is a source students often use for help.
Step 4: DESIGNING
After you have spell checked, grammar checked, and had at least one other set of eyes look over your work, submit it to turnitin.com. Then, copy your writing and paste it onto the Author’s Life page of your website. Include visual design elements to enhance your message. These elements should include titles, subtitles, images, etc.
Include multiple relevant images to provide your audience with visuals regarding your author such as where they grew up, family members, pictures of the author throughout life, etc. There should never be a time when the entire screen is text only.
Include the MLA information to your bibliography page and make sure to link the actual url back to the page. Make wure your entries are in alphabetical order.
Remember: every page of your website must have a link back to our class website.
