Hi students! My name is Mrs. Parish and I am your School Counselor. When I was an elementary student, I moved around a lot and had difficulty making friends. I had to learn to adapt and be resilient. As a shy person, I had to learn to overcome my fears. By overcoming my fears, I was able to make life long friendships and have memorable moments at school. We all go through challenges that shape our story and form who we are.
If you are going through something and find you are struggling at school, I am here to help! Reach out to your teacher and ask to meet with me, your school counselor.
Let's Chat,
Mrs. Parish
First, you have to feel your feelings. What are you feeling? Where in your body are you feeling it? What would you name that feeling? What does it look like? What does that feeling need? Feelings are not right or wrong, or good or bad. Feelings are emotions that we experience every single day. And it is important that we learn to manage our feelings and I am here to help!
Some feelings are easy to experience, like joy, excitement, happiness, calmness, being content and love. Some feelings are not as fun. Feelings like sadness, loneliness, anger, loss, fear, worry, rejection and betrayal. When we experience difficult feelings it can feel like something just isn't right. The difficult feelings can weigh you down. That's when it helps to talk to someone like me, Mrs. Parish!
There are ways to deal with these big emotions, we call these "Coping Skills" and there are lots of them! The thing about coping skills is you have to find the ones that work best for you! So if one doesn't work out or feels funny, try something new. Here are a few that I have found helpful:
Why is it important to cope with our feelings? They are not going away. We will deal with them for our entire life! If you try to ignore them or stuff them down, eventually they are going to "bubble up" and explode. You can't pick and choose them. You can't feel the feelings that are easy to feel and try to ignore the ones that are more difficult. Together, we will learn to feel our feelings and cope with each feeling as it comes.
There are all sorts of coping strategies, such as self-care, journaling, mindfulness, breathing techniques, drawing/coloring and even exercise. If you need help, visit my office so we can chat.
