Scholarships Tips!

Please read the tips below before beginning your scholarship search. If you need any help, please feel free to contact your counselor or Ms. Singletary, the college advisor. Their contact information is located under the Student Services tab at the top of the webpage.

  1. Always start your search with local scholarships and scholarships for specific populations (i.e gender, race, nationally, financial status, etc) to increase your chances of being awarded funds

  2. Give yourself at least two weeks to start and finish a scholarship application. Some scholarships require essays, letters of recommendation, official transcripts, etc.

  3. Complete your FAFSA as soon as possible!

  4. Scholarships exist for just about anything you can think of: some are for academic achievement, sports, hobbies, talents and there are even scholarships for medical conditions or being left handed!! Use these unique circumstances to your advantage.

  5. If needed, request recommendations and nomination at least two weeks in advance from your recommenders.

Frequency Asked Questions:

Do I get the scholarship money or does it go the school/college? It depends! Scholarships can be distributed in two ways: directly to the student or to the college/university's financial aid office. Scholarships which give funds to colleges/universities may ask students to submit proof of acceptance before the scholarship money is sent. The scholarship committee will let the student know how the money will be sent.

Do I get all the money at once? This also depends! Some scholarships break up the distribution of funds by semesters or school years. (i.e. $2,000 scholarships given out in $500 increments over 4 semesters). These scholarships are called recurring scholarships.

Is this scholarship only for my freshmen year? Most scholarships are one-time scholarships meaning a student can only apply to this scholarship once and receive one award. However, renewable scholarships are scholarships that allow their award winners to re-apply or renew their application for the same scholarship during future application cycles.
