Work-Based Learning Plan
Grade 9 Career Awareness
Identify areas of career interest and the wide world of career opportunities –complete Naviance Career Cluster Finder activities to identify top career clusters based on your interests and personal qualities/CFNC Career Exploration
Study the Plan of Study ( in Naviance) for the careers you like to understand the type of coursework required in both high school and college
Expose yourself to business partners and industry by taking advantage of field trips, clubs , career /college fair visits and guest speakers offered at school (aka Work-Based Learning). Network-observe, receive information and ask questions every chance you get
Train yourself to connect your classroom projects to mimic projects undertaken in the workplace
Begin your experience by volunteering, attending career related jobs outside of school
Begin career exploration and job shadowing through the Explorers program
Participate in Junior Achievement/Financial Literacy Workshop
Grade 10 and 11 Career Exploration
Complete the Naviance Strengths Explorer activities to connect your existing strengths, goals, skills and interests
Explore a range of occupations within the Career Cluster/industry that attracts you (CFNC, Naviance Career Key)
Identify new or different interests in order to explore careers more deeply (Naviance resources)
Identify colleges that match your interests, traits, skills and abilities and career goals
Find opportunities for two way interactions (in-person/virtual) with industry /community partners
Continue building your network through mentorship opportunities
Challenge yourselves by participating in competitions through academic clubs i.e. HOSA, FBLA, NSBE, TSA, DECA
Obtain internship/job shadow/continue career exploration through the Explorers program
Obtain CTE industry certifications through CTE classes
Grade 11 and 12 Career Preparation
Create a career development portfolio-Collect letters of recommendations, certificates, artifacts that can sell you,- Naviance- Resume Builder activity and college and scholarship activities
Obtain Job Readiness Training certification- Mayor's Youth Employment Program , Working Smart or CMS Canvas Career Center, mock interviews, dress for success, elevator pitch
Actively seek and obtain a paid work- based learning/internship experience that allows you to apply work readiness and academic skills as well as learn specific occupational skills (MYEP). Have a part time job? Ask your supervisor for additional responsibilities to turn the job into an internship experience
Take ASVAB Career Exploration test to identify your skills and explore more opportunities
Consider post graduation employment and training programs in your area of career interest Ex. Apprenticeship2000
Prepare for college admission requirements for the college options that offer your career interest
Challenge yourself with a dual enrollment college class (Career College Promise) related to your career aspirations
Obtain CTE industry certifications through CTE classes
Participate in Road to Hire/CTE Internship if you are interested in IT Career Pathway/Scholarship Opportunity

Work-Based Learning and the Benefits of Naviance
According to Harvard University School of Business and Economics, It is imperative for our scholars to have a career development plan when it comes to excelling in life and accelerating in their chosen career pathway. This year every scholar will be required to participate in our Naviance activities to help them discover career and college readiness opportunities. It is vital that you have a clear sense of the direction you would like to head with your career. The purpose of a career development plan is to help scholars reach their goals after high school. Therefore, we have strategically provided a work based learning roadmap for scholars to reflect on during their academic journey.
Naviance is a college and career readiness online tool that will help you:
Identify strengths and establish goals
Explore and identify career pathways of interest
Explore virtual career speakers (through roadtrip Nation)
Identify colleges of interest
Create individualized career development plan (Game plan)
Build a resume
Track college applications & send school electronic documents to colleges
Report scholarship dollars

Part of the planning process actually entails objectives on each grade level for scholars to develop specific career goals and mapping out a course on how to best reach them.
