National Board Certification is a rigorous, voluntary certification for teachers, school counselors, and media specialists. North Carolina currently leads the nation in the number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is fourth in the country in the number of educators who have achieved National Board Certification.
If you complete all four components of the National Board initial certification process, you are entitled to a full cycle of renewal credit (regardless of whether or not National Board Certification was achieved). The full renewal cycle of credit is for the completion of the initial process only.
Please note that as of December 8, 2023, deferment of credit is no longer available. Educators who have achieved their initial National Board Certification must utilize their full cycle of CEUs in their current renewal period.
If you have achieved this milestone, please fill out the National Board Initial Certification form so that your National Board renewal credits can be processed. You must upload your score report along with the form.
National Board Certification maintenance of certification candidates (MOC) do not have to the fill out the National Board Initial Certification form. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools will receive renewal candidate information from the NCDPI.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) allows the following continuing education units (CEUs):
Initial Certification or Attempt of All Four Components of National Board Certification:
4 CEUs of Content credit
4 CEUs of Literacy credit
Successful Maintenance of National Board Certification:
2 CEUs of Content credit (effective December 2024)
