The Joseph M. Fannell Memorial Scholarships

FOUR SCHOLARSHIPS for seniors! If intrested please see your counselor for application and deadlines! Here is Joseph's story!

On June 4, 2015, he was on his way to work when a driver ran a red light andstruck his car broadside; he died from injuries suffered in the crash the following day.  Although Joseph found enjoyment "working among lawyers," his passion was spoken word and performance-based poetry, an interest he first developed in high school. Joseph was known to go around to various classes reciting favorites pieces he had heard before his classmates and peers.  We later found out that he was bullied, and poetry was the way that he discovered himself and felt most comfortable sharing.  He was just beginning to come into himself when he was killed, starting to perform in local churches and events.

The Foundation was established in the wake of Joseph's death to continue his life and memory by creating and supporting programs to help young people overcome obstacles and reach their full potential, especially in the arts.To date we have given over $30,000 in scholarships and contest awards to youth and young adults in Joseph's name.

Originally based in New Jersey, we relocated to Charlotte two years ago and expanded our scholarships to four, including one for rising seniors in Mecklenburg County high schools.  We would like for you to pass on the scholarship information to your students.

Lehigh Commitment

The Lehigh Commitment—a pledge to make a transformative Lehigh education even more accessible for scholars from all backgrounds. All admitted students with a family income of less than $75,000 (and typical assets) will receive the Lehigh Commitment full tuition grant.

What is the Lehigh Commitment?

Full Tuition Coverage: Students will be provided with a grant equivalent to, or greater than, the cost of full tuition.

Funded Opportunities: Lehigh offers many existing programs to support the academic success of its students:

Student Opportunity Fund

Iacocca International Internships

High-Impact Experience Opportunity Fellowship

Travel Grants

Passport to Success Program

Loaner Laptop Program

Emergency Aid Fund

Career Preparation: The Center for Career and Professional Development provides support for students with career education and professional development, and provides opportunities for students to connect with employers and alumni through mentorship, internships and interviews.

In addition to the new Lehigh Commitment, we have met the full demonstrated need for admitted students—regardless of family income—for the last eight years, and have increased the number of merit scholarships that we have offered to admitted students. More than 30% of the admitted students for 2023-24 year received a merit scholarship of $15,000 or more per year. There is no separate application, or earlier application deadline for the majority of our merit scholarships—only an application is needed for our Performing Arts scholarships in music, theatre, and our Soaring Together Scholarship Program.

If you have students that are interested, please know that Lehigh provides an application fee waiver to any student for whom paying this fee is a hardship. They can select “I have been given a fee waiver from the Office of Admissions” in the Lehigh supplement to the Common or Coalition Application.

You're always welcome to reach out to the Office of Admissions at admissions@lehigh.edu, or the Office of Financial Aid at financialaid@lehigh.edu. Please let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to reading applications from your students soon!
