Zoom Tips

We are approaching the launch of ZoomEDU in CMS! Check out the One-Pager below!

Class hasn't started, even though it's past time?

Unfortunately, this is one of the problems that students have been facing. They click the Zoom link to join the class and they see that their teacher hasn't started the class yet. They wait, and wait, and wait. Or, maybe, it says that you're waiting for the host to let you in. For both of these, you wait until well after class should've started and it seems like your teacher is ignoring you! Don't fret: your teacher doesn't even know you're there! Ouch! The only solution that I can offer at this time is to restart your computer. Yes, do it. I would also recommend paying attention to the time and not waiting too long after class starts to try that. You may have a sense by now of how long it takes your teacher to let you in the room once the period starts, so give them time to take attendance while they're letting students in from the waiting room, but if it seems like you've waited longer than you should, go ahead and restart. Also, don't forget to stay in touch with your teachers and keep them informed when you're having technology issues! That's important!

Zoom using too much data for your internet connection?

Did you know that for group video calling (ie your classes!), Zoom uses 800kbps/1.0Mbps (up/down) for high quality video? But wait, if you're using 1080p HD video, we're talking 2.5-3.0Mbps! See what I did there? You thought high quality video was going to be the best, but no, that's probably what you want to try to use if you're having trouble with your streaming quality or you know that you're on limited data (like with a hotspot) and you want it to stretch as far as possible. To check out more info on how much data Zoom uses, check out this article. For tips on reducing Zoom data and bandwidth use, check out this site from IT@Cornell University.

Don't forget that you can add a virtual background so that no one can see what's really going on behind you!
