Hello, Northwest Families. Our robo calls can not be longer than 3 minutes, so today, you are getting part 2 of testing information.
First, parents are wanting to know about carpooling. I have checked to make sure that would be OK, given that there could be severe transportation issues to testing, otherwise. That is perfectly OK, as long as the student's parent sends a note to the school that morning, letting us know the name of the parent driver who is picking up their child. The driver of the carpool must be a parent or guardian at our school and be able to show us a valid photo ID in the pick-up line at carpool. I hate to be a stickler, but I can't have the kids getting into just any car. We can take those notes from students in the first testing block, and teachers can then give those to Ms. Andrews. I know there are full remote students and their parents who have never been on campus. Drop off and pick up for car riders is in the back of the school near the gym. Just turn down Celia Street next to the school off of Beatties Ford Road. Remember, if your student does not have testing scheduled for that day, they do not come to the school. The testing subject, day, and time have already been sent out and is posted on the Friends of Northwest site and our website for the school. It will go out via robo-call again, tomorrow. Yes, the schedule came out later than I wanted, but I was arguing with Transportation about why our school can not have early release like the other schools do, having a fleet of busses arrive earlier. That would have affected all this information you are now getting. I lost that argument.
On days when the student is not at school for testing, or the times after testing when the student leaves to go home, they will attend any classes via Canvas or zoom that the teacher indicates are necessary. I will continue to update you as necessary.
Dear Parent or Guardian:
As we approach the end of the school year, we would like to share information with you regarding the expectations for students to participate in end-of-year testing. Unlike spring 2020, all students are expected to take the following state tests, as required by federal and state laws:
End-of-grade tests in Reading, Mathematics (grades 3-8), and Science (grades 5 and 8)
End-of-course tests in NC Math 1, NC Math 3, English II, and Biology
Career and Technical Education tests
ACT Workkeys
All state and federal assessments are required to be administered in-person, at school. Unfortunately, it is not possible to have students take these assessments at home. The well-being of our students, teachers, and communities is the highest priority and our schools will work to ensure all health and safety protocols are in place. To support safe settings and to give students access to the tests, the testing window has been extended so fewer students are in a school at the same time.
We understand there may be concerns about students who are currently enrolled in the Full Remote Academy coming to school to take an assessment. Please consider the value of having information on your student’s learning for this school year, particularly in planning for instruction next year.
As we have all experienced in the past several months, by working together we can make the best decisions for each student. If you have any concerns or needs, please contact your student’s teacher for more information or a discussion on how we can best meet the needs of your student and your family.
You will find your student’s test date on the opposite side of this page. Our testing should be over by 1:30, but some students may require additional time if operating on federal and state documents requirements. Only students who are testing that day should attend school, and this applies to middle and high school students. There are no teacher made exams, this year. I have listed the days students are to attend and the grade levels on the opposite page, along with the school schedule.
Lunch for students will be given once tests are completed after 1:30. Lunch will be “grab-and-go.”
Transportation cannot release our school early by sending busses earlier than 4:15, but busses will run at the normal time of 4:15.
Parents may pick up their student in the carpool area at 1:30, but please note the following:
you must send a note to Ms. Andrews excusing your student
It must be sent with your student (no emails, please)
It must indicate what time you will be by the school to pick up your student
The person picking up the student MUST be a parent or guardian
Please be prepared to show a photo ID/driver’s license when picking up your student
Student drivers must also give a parent note to Ms. Andrews if they are leaving early. It is the expectation that they will leave campus after completing testing each day they are scheduled to do so.
Testing begins at 9:15. Late students may have to return on the 27th or 28th to make up tests. Students must also bring their charged CMS Chromebook for testing. If a student does not have their Chromebook or it is not sufficiently charged, they will have to return on the 27th or 28th to make up the tests.
❏ Grade 8 Science EOG: May 24th
❏ Grade 6, 7, and 8 Reading: May 25th
❏ Grade 6, 7, and 8 Math EOG: May 26th
❏ Grade 8 Math I: May 26th

❏ NC Math I EOC: May 24th
❏ English II EOC: May 24th
❏ NC Math III EOC: May 25th
❏ Biology EOC: May 26th
Daily Schedule:
9:15-1:30: Testing
1:35-2:00: Middle School Lunch, 2:05-2:35 High School Lunch
2:40-3:10: 3rd block
3:15-3:55: 4th bock
Teachers have already taken care of CTE and ACT testing scheduling with the students.
You really do need to have your student test to the best of their ability, so you and we can determine what they know. We can talk about “Required” and “Expected” all day, but these tests are so important. If a middle school student misses the exam, it is not counted, except that gray area of Math I in grade 8. Math I in grade 8 does count! If a high school student does that, it is a 50, and that 50 becomes 20% of the student’s grade! Breakfast is a great way to start a testing day, and at school, it’s free! If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact your child’s school at 980-343-5500.
Northwest Parents, this is your principal, Ms. Sears, letting you know that there was a disturbance near the school, today, as reported to me by our SRO. He advised we go on modified lockdown until he could get more information, which we did, then we went into full lockdown almost immediately, as I heard the disturbance could be of a more serious nature. That was just a short while ago. We just got a call from our SRO, telling us that we have an all clear. Please know that we went through every CMS safety protocols, made all reports necessary, and we can now resume.
Dear Parents/Staff:
We have just learned that an individual at Northwest School of the Arts has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual is isolating at home and will not return to the school building until they are no longer considered to be contagious.
We are currently working very closely with Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) to identify anyone who has had close contact* to this individual. We will be sending another letter from MCPH soon with additional information.
In the meantime, we are following CMS protocols to clean and disinfect appropriate areas of the building.
We also want to remind all our students, families and staff members to continue to follow all health and safety protocols to prevent spread of COVID-19 in our schools and our community. This includes:
Staying home if anyone in the household develops symptoms of COVID-19 or tests positive for COVID-19
Following the 3 W’s—wear a face covering, wait six feet apart (social distancing), wash hands frequently.
If you have questions, please contact the school.
For general information regarding COVID-19, please visit https://www.mecknc.gov/covid-19 or call the MCPH COVID-19 Hotline at 980-314-9400.
Just a reminder that today is an early release day, meaning that all Wednesday remote learning rescheduled to end three hours earlier. The schedule has been shared with students and is as follows. If there are questions reach out to your teacher or grade level administrator.

Hi:
This is Mr. Lawler with your Sunday message.
This is for students currently enrolled in a year-long NCVPS class or a NCVPS class that began in January for the spring semester. This is a reminder that your course will end earlier than usual. The school LEA and your NCVPS teacher have both notified you. We will be receiving final grade reports for NCVPS classes on May 14th. Your deadline for completing all assignments is May 12. Please make sure and check with your NCVPS teacher. There will be no extensions or exceptions.
As we approach the end of the year, we typically see an increase in appointments and early dismissals. Please make sure your student brings a note and that the person picking them up is listed in PowerSchool and is prepared to show identification.
This is a reminder to all students that all of CMS continues to follow the same CMS safety protocols they have since February. Masks are required at all times, except when eating or drinking in the cafeteria. Students must social distance at all times. Students will continue to be screened upon arrival.
***IMPORTANT UPDATE: SPRING PICTURES SATURDAY, APRIL 24th!***
DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER, i.e. RAIN, spring pictures will be rescheduled to Saturday, May 1st. Anyone who signed up should come during their appointment slot on MAY 1st; any 6-11 students who could not make the 24th can still sign up for May 1st. There are NO other make-up dates.
Hi:
This is Mr. Lawler with your Sunday message.
Please join Friends of Northwest PTO for the last General meeting of the 2021 school year, Thursday April 22nd at 7pm via zoom.
The meeting agenda will consist of voting in new officers, teacher appreciation week and Principal Sears answering questions.
You can find the zoom link on the Friends of Northwest website and Friends of Northwest FB page.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plans to hold in-person graduation ceremonies for the class of 2021. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols and social-distancing requirements, the district will limit each graduate to two guests. All ceremonies will be livestreamed for remote viewing.
Ceremonies will be held at Bojangles Coliseum, Ovens Auditorium and the Charlotte Convention Center. Graduation dates and times are largely the same as previously stated; however some adjustments were required to meet health and safety protocols. A full list of graduation dates and times can be found on the CMS website. NWSA's graduation will be held Friday, June 4th at 8pm at Bojangles Coliseum.
This is a reminder to all in person students that all of CMS continues to follow the same CMS safety protocols they have since February. Masks are required at all times, except when eating or drinking in the cafeteria. Students must social distance at all times. Students will continue to be screened upon arrival.
The Visual Arts Department is proud to announce our 2021 NWSA Middle School Art Show. This year the show will be completely online due to social distancing guidelines. The show opened digitally this Friday April 2nd. You can view our student work by visiting the Visual Arts Booster’s homepage at nwsavab.com.
The Media Center is still down almost 400 unreturned books. Parents can always drop the books off 24/7 in the media center return box in front of school if the student is not attending in person instruction.
The fastest way to get through the screening process both through carpool and the bus is for your student to fill out the screener each morning and show your green check when you arrive. This is the link to the page where it is located.

Hello, Northwest Families. Please listen to this message, as it is very important and has to reach you before this Friday. We just got it, today. The message reads as follows:
On March 29th we opened registration to Camp CMS. As of this morning we had over 22,000 registrants. However, we recognize that many of our families would benefit from the registration window being extended. In that spirit we have extended the Camp CMS registration window through this Friday, April 16th. The registration window will close at 11:59pm. A district-wide Connect5 message in English and Spanish will go out from our Communications Office this evening, and media outlets will be notified. We ask that you too share this information with your respective students and families. We ask that you please use the Connect5 reminder script previously provided in your electronic media kit, updating the registration deadline to April 16th.
Again, Camp CMS is open to all students, but House Bill 82 requires districts to prioritize students who are most in need of continued learning opportunities. Families may pre-register digitally from any device at http://bit.ly/CampCMS. The brief digital registration is available in 10 languages. Please note, space is still limited.
The Camp CMS registration link and flyer are accessible from the main CMS website and Peachjar.
Thank you, and good evening.
Hi:
This is Mr. Lawler with your Sunday message.
On the 12th we will welcome back all of our current in-person students. For students just joining us in person for the first time, if you have been assigned bus transportation, it has been emailed to their canvas account by the 11th. Parents who did not fill out the Northwest change form by March 30th or who emailed or filled out through another school will not have a bus on Monday the 12th. Again, check your student's canvas account to see if you do.
This is a reminder to all returning students that all of CMS continues to follow the same CMS safety protocols they have since February. Masks are required at all times, except when eating or drinking in the cafeteria. Students must social distance at all times. Students will continue to be screened upon arrival.
New Bell Schedules are posted on our website. They start April 12th with Homeroom/SEL

Attention northwest families, there is a lot of information going out right now that is very important, but I need you to stop and listen to this personal message. As most of you know our seniors have missed out on performance opportunities for well over a year. They didn’t have their junior prom and they won’t have their senior prom. The Dragon family wants to rally around our seniors with the “adopt a senior program”. Please consider reaching out to Teri Miller at KMiller59@carolina.rr.com to be paired with a senior that you can spoil with a gift basket. This is open to all NWSA families. We only have a little over 50 seniors available for adoption and they will go fast, but we need YOU to make it happen! Our goal is to get all of them matched with a family this week! Please visit the friends of NWSA Facebook page for more information.
Based on the revised attendance guidelines, students are expected to attend in-person instruction on their scheduled days. However, there may be situations that require a student to attend school remotely In the event a parent needs to have their child participate in remote learning during an in-person day, the parent needs to contact the child’s teacher to document the request and reason. If the student participates in remote instruction for more than half of the instructional day, which may be asynchronous because of the teacher’s schedule, the student may be marked Present Off Site using the 1R code.

Hello, NWSA families,
This is an important message about AP exams. CMS has determined that we will give all AP exams during the 1st testing window of May 3 – 17 IN PERSON and in the paper/pencil format. This means all AP students will need to come to the campus for their AP exam. An informational flyer and schedule of exams can be found here.
Parents and students will need to arrange their own transportation for all AP exams.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tim Sennett at the school.
Hello Northwest School of the Arts Families,
Please remember to complete the Parent Change Request form if you would like to request a change in your child’s current assignment of in-person instruction or full remote academy. Please do so no later than close of business at 5 pm on Friday, March 26th.
For students in pre-K through fifth grade and those who attend K-8 schools: if no changes are made using the form, the students’ current learning option will remain in effect.
For students in grades 6-12 in traditional middle and high schools: those who currently attend in-person whose families do not complete the Parent Change Request Form will begin attending in-person four days per week starting April 12.
Students currently in the Full Remote Academy whose families do not complete the Parent Change Request form will remain in the Full Remote Academy.
Good Evening Northwest Families,
This is Principal Melody Sears calling to provide you with information regarding the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education decision to transition to Plan A for in-person instruction for students in grades 6-12, and next steps for our school. Last night, the Board voted to provide middle and high school families with the option to transition to Plan A in-person instruction. This means 4 days of in-person and 1 day of remote instruction. You may choose the in-person option which is in-person 4 days per week with one remote learning day, or choose to have your student enrolled in the full remote academy. Students with a disability who have been identified for in-person instruction 5 days a week through an IEP/504 team decision will continue to have the option to attend 5 days a week.
If you are interested in changing your child’s rotation from in-person to remote OR remote to in-person, please complete the Parent Change Request Form by Friday, March 26 at 5pm. The link will also be sent via email, text, as well as posted on the school website. A separate form must be completed to request a change for each child in a family. Be prepared to have your child’s first and last name, student ID number, and grade level. The new attendance plan will begin Monday, April 12. Students who currently attend in-person whose families do not complete the Parent Change Request Form will begin attending in-person four days per week starting April 12. Students currently in the Full Remote Academy whose families do not complete the Parent Change Request form will remain in the Full Remote Academy, Thank you and have a good evening!
Dear Northwest Families,
You are invited to share feedback!
This is Principal Melody Sears, calling to invite you to join a community engagement session for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools 2021-2022 budget. You are encouraged to attend the virtual broadcast on March 25 at 6:30pm on Facebook and provide real-time input for district leadership as they develop budget priorities.
Tell us what is important to you!
Join CMS leadership on Thursday, March 25 at 6:30pm to ask questions and give your valuable opinion.
Thank you!
In addition, I am going to be sending the CMS proposed budget on to our PTO co-President, Ms. Bastionson, and to our media coordinator, Ms. Slater, to put on the PTO Friends of Northwest and NWSA websites, so everyone can get a look at how CMS is proposing to spend your tax dollars.
I feel sure that, after our last Board meeting, last night, I will be sending out more information to you, after this message, especially about attendance, so please stay tuned!
Good Morning, Northwest.
Something happened to the weather alerts for CMS and maybe not all of you have gotten the notification that we are going to be learning remotely, today, and following our usual schedule via our chrome books. Some principals didn't get the message, either -- like me! I know I was halfway to school and had to turn around because of the strange texts I was getting as I was driving. So, I pulled over to find out what was going on. No one is coming into the school building, today. Teachers and staff are staying home, and no CMS busses are running. I'm sorry if you are hearing this for the first time, but I literally just got in from the drive back home to let you know. I guess we will try again, tomorrow. Everyone, have a super day, full of learning. And stay safe! Sheesh! What's next? Maybe I shouldn't ask.
Hello!
I wanted to remind our parents and students of a few things.
First, Wednesdays, no one is here. Not students, not teachers, not secretarial staff, not counselors, -- no one. This is so the custodial staff can get some deep cleaning done between attendance rotations. I did send out a robo-call to sophomores only about the Pre-ACT that is on a Wednesday further off on the calendar, but as a rule, forget coming to school in person on Wednesdays. Instead, you will all teach and learn remotely. For now. (We know how that goes.) The Wednesday schedule is online on our NWSA site, and that has been communicated by teachers to students. Most of what students will do involves asynchronous work.
Next, we can not switch out student rotations for in person learning. Rotation A stays rotation A. Rotation B stays rotation B.
Also, we aren't taking more students into the in-person rotations due to safety rules for distancing in the school.
In addition, some parents need to be reminded that the new pandemic grading policy from CMS pertains only to second semester that began in January. It does not pertain to first semester.
If your student is signed up for an in person rotation and they do NOT come to the school building, the child is counted absent, EVEN IF the student logs in and does the work from home, per CMS.
Lastly, if you find that your family is in an emergency criteria situation at home, and you need your child to go full remote instead of in-person, please email me and Ms. Warren your request along with the reason why and a phone number, so we can talk.
Thank you, and please be safe.
Dear 10th grade student/family,
This is your principal, Ms. Sears, with a message from our Testing Coordinator, Mr. Sennett.
All students enrolled in grade 10 for the first time according to PowerSchool should participate in the PreACT test. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on our schools, CMS has designated Wednesday, April 21, 2021 as PreACT test day.
To aid in planning, including arranging transportation for your student should they need it, we are asking you to complete this short intent survey by Sunday March 21, 2021. I have included the link to the survey in the email that comes with this robo-call, and have asked that it be placed on our webpage and on the Friends of Northwest/PTO site. It is http://bit.ly/PreACTCCRAA . After the survey window closes, NWSA will communicate specific testing and/or transportation details with you. Parking pass will not be required for those who are able to drive to campus.
Students must arrive no later than 9 am to be screened and get to their designated test locations. We will have breakfast and a grab-and-go lunch available that day. Please bring your own pencils, and a water bottle/snack. The PreACT test will be administered via paper/pencil tests. We WILL NOT be administering PreACT online.
Hello, Northwest.
Wow. We sure love change, huh? Well, look at it THIS way: As long as we're changing, we're growing. Plus, this change in schedule is a sign that things are getting a bit better on the pandemic front, but please remember that spring break is almost upon us. The urge to travel out of the country is pretty big in some circles, and the desire for the beach or other vacation destinations is really strong. Considering we have been locked up, basically, for a year, that is understandable, but I want you to remember a few things. The CDC recommends that you avoid non-essential travel at this time. Any travel increases your risk of being exposed to COVID-19. We know some families may already have travel plans. Anyone traveling internationally by air is required to have a negative COVID-19 test upon return to the US. I am reminding staff and families that if they travel to avoid crowds and be sure to social distance and continue to wear face coverings. CDC recommends that if you travel that you get tested 1-3 days before travel, then test 3-5 days after travel and continue to quarantine for 7 days after traveling. We strongly encourage everyone to follow these guidelines. CMS does not expect schools to monitor or follow up on travel plans, just encourage all to follow these recommendations.
Next, we have sent the schedule for Wednesdays to our PTO to post online, and we sent it to Ms. Slater to post on our NWSA school site. You know that Wednesdays will now be at home learning for everyone, including teachers, so the custodial staff has time and room to deep clean between rotations. You know that C rotation has collapsed, and half of those students will be attending on Mondays and Tuesdays along with the A rotation kids, and the other half of the C rotation will be collapsed into Thursdays and Fridays with the rest of the B rotation kids. CMS was to have contacted you via robo-call to let you know which rotation you are on. If you did not get the call and do not know, please call CMS Transportation.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, we will still follow the same schedule that we are on, now. That goes for full remote AND in-person students. Why mess with something that works, right? We did have to add another lunch, due to increased numbers, but that should not affect anyone besides some middle school folk. In addition, due to increased numbers, we may have to rotate a few students to the auditorium -- not every period, just the ones where some of the classes are too full to be safe. In those few instances, teachers will rotate students into the auditorium each time class meets, so that no students have to always go to the auditorium. I just wanted you to know so that it won't surprise you. And hey, don't forget those bus attestation forms for next week!
Interesting times, huh? I think I heard that is part of an ancient curse, but in so many ways it has been a blessing! I have seen so many of our teachers and staff pull together, pull students through hard times, and pull rabbits out of their hats! I've seen that from parents, too. Parents have been on the front lines of education, alongside their children, helping us help students. Thank you so very much! Happy weekend!
Hello, Northwest! This is your principal, Melody Sears, with some information for you. First, I wanted to give a shout-out to our PTO for the welcome back gift of plants for our teachers. What a lift in our shoes to receive something full of life in this spring of all-things-returning! Of course, I planted mine, immediately.
Second, I wanted to answer a few questions about exams. As far as I know, and I need to stress AS FAR AS I KNOW, before all the many changes began happening, our AP exams were scheduled for the weeks of May 3rd and May 10th. EOC's and EOG's were scheduled for the weeks of May 17th and May 24th. Now, all that could change in a flash, but that is all I have for right now. No one has communicated any new information, as of yet. I am stressing AS OF YET.
Thirdly, I hope everyone keeps up with what the Board will be saying and voting on, this evening. It could mean tweaks to our rotations and how our students will be coming to school. It could mean that things will stay the same, but you know as well as I do that changes have taken place in this pandemic many times, already.
Fourthly, teachers have until March 11th to go in and make the CMS Pandemic Grading Policy changes. Parents, please look at your students' grades, and please make sure you check attendance. I am a bit concerned about the numbers of students who are in difficulty for grades and attendance at every grade level. If your child is failing a course, the teacher should have reached out to you. Please let me know if that has not happened.
Fifthly, Seniors, I wanted to tell you once more that your graduation ceremony is still slated for June 2nd at 3 PM at Ovens Auditorium. There have not been any changes around that, but I will let you know if things do change.
Lastly, and I hate to say this, I don't think we are going to be able to hold a prom, this year. If anything changes on that front, I will let you know. If they don't, I am holding out for the option of maybe having a prom in the summer on campus before you guys go off to college. I hope covid conditions improve enough for us to have one. Please stay tuned. I love all you guys, and hope this whole pandemic blows over pretty quick so I can start hugging my babies, again!
Good Evening Class and Parents of 2021:
We are in the process of ordering your child’s diploma for Graduation on June 2nd. We are requesting that you fill out this google form with the correct spelling of your First Name, Middle Name, Last Name and Suffix if applicable. The deadline to complete this task is Friday March 5, 2021. The link to complete this form is http://bit.ly/NWSA2021Graduationlist. The link is posted on our school’s webpage and Ms. Meeks canvas page. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. French.
Hello, Northwest. Here is the third and LAST in a series of messages about the first day of school for each in-person rotation. I know this is a lot. A LOT, but you seriously must know these things. Today's message is primarily about bus riders, but there is other information, as well.
5. Students who ride a bus will have their attestation form ready (a copy is on our website) to give the bus driver before boarding. Once bus riders arrive at the school, they will be screened and given a temperature check as they disembark. They will gather beside the bus until all students have been checked, and then released to go to the courtyard to grab breakfast if they want it, and go to their first block class to eat breakfast.
6. If a bus rider fails the screener or temperature check at the school, they will be escorted to the Covid symptoms room by an administrator, visited by our school nurse, and parents will be notified to come to pick up the student immediately. The other students who were riding the same bus will be led to a holding station and appropriate CMS protocols will be followed for those students, which include notification of parents. As students wait for parents, they will be allowed to have breakfast brought to them and work on their classes, using their chrome books.
7. Custodial staff will come around to collect trash from breakfast. All hallways are marked with directional arrows that tell students which direction they should walk to get to class and enter and exit the buildings. A school map is on our website.
8. Faculty and staff will be in the hallways to ensure all students get to their appropriate classes safely.
9. Students who arrive after 9:15 should enter through the front of the school, where they will be screened. No parents may enter the building unless under very specific CMS guidelines.
10. All students and staff MUST wear a mask at all times unless they are eating lunch or breakfast. Violators of this rule and other Covid safety rules will be placed in the auditorium, away from other students to await their parents' arrival at the school for a conference and a trip back home. They will also be suspended from the bus for that afternoon, as violations of safety rules could put others in jeopardy. Further violations will result in increased consequences for insubordination in not following directives.
10. Middle school lunch has assigned seating, and both middle and high school lunches have seating that is designated six feet apart from other students. Students will be given blue lunch cards in SEL with bar codes on them for lunch time. Students can take a picture of their bar code with their phone to scan at lunch time. This will speed up the line time, and increase the eating time. Students will get copies of schedules in SEL, as well.
Also, there will be times for students to use the restroom other than designated class times. In that case, someone will escort the student to and from the restroom after the teacher calls.
I am very sure Mr. Lawler or Dr. Lockhart will let me know if I have forgotten anything. Please just stick with me. We are going to get through this thing together. We will come out on the other side knowing more, being more compassionate, and having our life priorities straight.
Hello, Northwest.
First, this second message is filled with a bunch of "don't" and processes. I want to begin by saying that I miss the kids. My favorite word is 'yes', so all these no's are sort of hard for me.
1. If your family has met any of the CMS emergency criteria that includes having an immune-compromising condition, and you need your child to go to full remote learning, you need to email me and Ms. Warren to let us know. If you already have, but have not gotten a response, just do it again.
2. New families? If you are driving your student to school, you should come in on the front side of the school on Beatties Ford Road and make a right turn onto Celia Street. Please do not attempt to turn left onto Celia, as it causes traffic backup. Then, go to the first entrance to the school on your right, and follow the carpool line to the front of the gym. All students who are driving should be in the carpool line as well. If student drivers attempt to park in the student lot before going through the carpool line, they will be redirected to the back of the carpool line.
3. In the carpool line, please have everyone, including your student, stay in the car for screening, temperature checks, and any needed directions to first block.
4. Should a student pass the screener, but fail the temperature check, the driver will be directed to go to the back of the carpool line and directed to turn off their car heater so that we can get a more accurate reading. Should the student fail the temperature check again, the student will not get out of the car and will be directed to return home.
5. Students who pass the carpool screeners will leave their cars for the courtyard, where they will grab breakfast if they want it and report directly to their first block class to eat breakfast. Students should wait until seated in their first block classroom before unmasking and eating breakfast.
Stay tuned to find out what bus riders will do and some processes that will apply to everyone in the next message!
Hello, Northwest. This is your Principal, Melody Sears, with some very vital information for this coming Monday. Over the next two or three days, you will be getting some extremely important information pertaining to operations at the school. Some of it pertains to In-person processes for the first day of "A" rotation which begins on Monday, and some pertains to those in "B" and "C" rotations, as well as those students in full remote learning for the rest of this school year. I know some of you get these calls and just hang up. Now is not the time to do that, please. We will do our best with the help of CMS and parent volunteers and teachers to get information out to our community in Spanish whenever possible, but it may take a bit of time to get information translated, so please be patient. Again, this coming Monday will be the first day of school for students on the "A" rotation. In order to get on a bus, students must have an attestation form filled out by their parents the first time they get on a school bus every week. You were sent a form, way back in November, and there is one on the Northwest site. We will be sending some home with every student on the first day they come back to school on every rotation, for the future.
This first message is also being emailed to you, and it contains an updated schedule for everybody, both in-person and remote. We had to update the schedule because of the required cleaning time between our middle and high school lunches. Students should be reviewing that schedule in their classes, today. This message also includes the new CMS Pandemic Grading Policy. I have asked that both of these get posted on our Northwest site and on the PTO "Friends of Northwest" page. both should be up for you to view by this evening. Please give teachers to the end of the quarter to make those required grade adjustments.
Students should remember to bring earbuds and their computers, along with a charger with their name taped on it if they are returning in-person. They should bring only what is essential for the day of learning, as lockers will not be available to them. If they have PE, they will not dress out in the locker room, but wear comfortable clothing to school so they can participate in PE. Students should also remember that we are not drinking directly from the water fountain, but cups will be beside the water fountain so students can fill those to drink, or bring water bottles.
There has been a change in how we will do lunch at school. All students will eat lunch in the cafeteria or the overflow gym and hallway areas. Middle school will have assigned seating to ensure safe distancing. We will still have "Grab and Go" breakfast stations in the courtyard and coming in from carpool. Students will grab breakfast and then report to their first block class to sit down and eat breakfast in the classroom.
Please stay tuned for future messages.
Parents, please note that if your child is coming back to the building on any of those A, B, C rotations, Nurse Chapman will be at the front of the school inside the front door to take your completed medication forms along with the medications on Thursday and Friday, the 18th and 19th between 9 AM and 2 PM. Remember that you can find those medication forms online on the CMS site, and they have to be filled out by you and your student’s doctor before we can accept any medications. Remember that this also includes drugs you may not think about, like Tylenol or Aspirin. If you have any questions, please reach out to Nurse Chapman at 980-240-3174. Thanks!
Hello NWSA families. The CMS School Choice Lotteries are now complete, and we have our enrollment numbers for next school year in place. In order for us to plan the very best possible arts and core offerings for students we need to know if these lottery numbers reflect the real picture. What I mean is if you are not planning on returning to NWSA it would be enormously beneficial to me if you could shoot me an email. We typically see between 80-100 families who do not return each year for a variety of reasons like relocation or early college as examples. Public schools across the state are seeing drops in enrollment due to reasons that stem directly from Covid, and our little school that has so mightily performed to place Charlotte as a choice living destination is very concerned. Here why this is so vital – each 25 students that withdraw will be a loss of a teacher. I then have to redo the master schedule and eliminate programs. Knowing that you might not return means our Arts Director and Auditions Coordinator can actively recruit for those grades and majors where we will have space. So again, if you know that you are not returning, please shoot me an email. And no, this is not binding. If you change your mind – no problem. About 90 percent of the kids who leave eventually return, and we welcome them with open arms!
Hello!
On February 23rd, our Northwest Juniors and some other students who have already been contacted will be taking the ACT test on campus. Students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will be staying home, that day, and going to class via their computers for a day of asynchronous learning. All middle school students scheduled to be in school that week will still be coming to school and having classes as usual on the 23rd.
Mrs. Rowe will be holding an ACT Math Review workshop for Juniors this Saturday, February 13th, and next Saturday, February 20th, from 9am to Noon. For more info, join Remind @mathact2021 or visit her website bit.ly/RoweMath and click on ACT/SAT Prep at the top of the page.
We need to be clear about attendance. If you are scheduled to be at school on the appropriate rotation and you elect to stay at home and join in via computer, you will still be counted absent, per CMS. We are not taking any students into the school who want to change from full remote to in-person learning, per CMS. We are taking students out of the school for full remote learning at this time only if they meet the CMS specified emergency criteria.
Students who report to in-person learning must wear masks, bring earbuds, bring their computers, grab breakfast from the cart in the courtyard, and report to first block in order to eat breakfast there. Students who are eligible to drive to campus may do so only if they have a parking permit. Mr. Lawler and Ms. Leeson will be setting up shop this coming Wednesday, taking Seniors first, of course. More information will be coming, but we will not be charging for that. You have to have a sticker on your car to park here for safety reasons. All others will be towed. Also, understand that if you drive on campus, you will have to drive up to the gym in the carpool line to be screened, like everyone else, before you can park in your assigned space. If you fail the screener, you will not get out of your car, and you will be sent home.
Sorry about all the serious stuff, but these are serious times. I hope all our students and their parents are and will remain safe and well.
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, with some special information just for you! By now, you all know that we will actually be returning to school in A, B, and C week rotations starting on February 23rd. Yes, I know CMS has changed school start dates with these rotations more than just once, and it has been quite a while since you last heard exactly what rotation you were actually on, so CMS will be sending out a robo-call on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, to all students with all the updated information about who is on what rotation. Please listen for that.
We are getting all kinds of updated information out and up on our NWSA website. One of those items will be the Parent/Guardian Attestation form for the bus. Yes, parents have to fill that out before students will be allowed to get on the bus, so that is an important one to have, along with the screener attestation, but there will be more about that coming out, shortly. We will be informing you about mask requirements for PE, Band, Orchestra, and about student gatherings, about how we can’t have events that draw large numbers of folks in one place, and about rehearsals requirements for inside and outside, along with rules prohibiting the sharing of equipment. News will be coming out about how kids who take PE will not be changing in locker rooms, so on the days kids have PE, they should come to school in comfortable clothing so they can be actively engaged, and yes, there are mask guidelines for that class, too. We will be telling you in several messages that students should come to school with earbuds. We will be reminding you about the rules for adults and how we can’t have adults in the building except in the main office, and even then, that number is limited. That means no one can have lunch with their student, sadly.
Look. I know that’s a lot of “cant’s,” but let me tell you that you are able to slam dunk all those “cant’s” with one great “CAN.” It’s hard, but by changing your attitude, instead of saying, I can’t,” you can exchange “can’t” for “I get to.” I get to come to school and see my friends. My child gets to continue as safely as possible with their education. I get to learn a whole lot about computer technology that is useful in my everyday life.
And your principal gets to have the opportunity of a lifetime – to see her students and her staff through a terrible pandemic and bring them all out on the other side, safer and wiser than when they first confronted it. Please send positive vibes my way that I am able to fill that mission.
Hello, NWSA Families!
It is obvious by now that this pandemic has been awful in so many ways from illness, jobs, and of course, virtual learning. Unfortunately, we are starting to see a major rise in damage to the Chromebooks that students are now using throughout the day. Most families did receive the brand-new Chromebooks, and to families who have not exchanged their older models, you can still do that. I am asking parents/guardians to have a dialogue with their child about taking care of their Chromebooks. The most frequent problem we are seeing is cracked screens, which cannot occur naturally. Put simply, either the student is dropping the device, sitting on the device, or placing too much weight on the device. No family wants to incur the expense of repair or replacement.
To review, Student & Parent Responsibilities, as well as Chromebook Expectations, can be found on the NWSA ‘20-’21 Toolkit located at bit.ly/nwsaremote Simple click on the link for Chromebooks under ‘Technology Troubleshooting & Assistance.’ On that page, you will also find the Chromebook Damage/Repair Fees that will be incurred for broken screens, missing keys, lost chargers, or complete damage to the device when it is unable to be repaired.
Hello Northwest, this is an update on when the school is staffed during the school day. Administrative staff is available Monday's and Thursday's: 8-10; Tuesday's: 11-1; Wednesday's and Friday's: 2-4. This will be the schedule until Feb. 15. Although these hours will be staffed, email will remain your most convenient option.
NWSA was the first school in CMS to receive the new G8 Chromebook devices and on December 12, 2020, we distributed them to the majority of our students.
However, if your student did not receive one of the new devices, please complete the request form BY 2PM TUESDAY at http://bit.ly/jan13cbswap (all lowercase) and come by the school on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 between 9-10 am OR 1-2 pm and swap out their older device and charging cable for one of the new G8s.
Please remember that this is for EVERYONE who has an old device and is not just for those whose device isn't working. This is in the best interest of your student during remote learning so that they have the best tools to facilitate their online experience and the NEW Chromebooks are extremely beneficial to achieving those goals.
Please note that while it is not necessary to complete the form, doing so will make the process swifter as the new device will already be assigned to your student. If you do not fill out the bitly by 2 pm, please write the student name and ID on a separate sheet of paper to hand in at Chrome exchange.
Hello, Northwest. I trust that all of you are having a happy break, and that all of you are safe and well. I want that to be the case, but the fact is that I know some of you aren't. For example, I know that Theatre Charlotte caught fire on Monday, burning the auditorium and destroying the light and sound equipment. Now, Theatre Charlotte has been a longtime friend to our little school, and many of our students have tread her boards in their Northwest years. Ron and Chase Law have believed in Northwest and the artists it produces to the point that they sent their own student to our school, and their child attends to this day. Ron has served on our Theatre Arts Guild (TAG) Board, and together with his lovely wife, they have given of their time and labor. I have reached out to them, and Ron says he will be needing people power, pretty soon, to help at the theatre, considering the damage. He says we can go to the Theatre Charlotte website and sign up to volunteer. I am hoping this call for a true friend is heard and answered by many at Northwest.
Look. If I know our people are in trouble, I am just going to tell you, because I know many of you are going to try to help. You just have to know. Thanks, and let us hope we are all able to get together in person very soon.
Hello, Northwest! Today is the second part of The Great Chromebook Exchange, and administrators and teacher volunteers will be present to assist, this afternoon. I wanted to lift up our PTO for helping to raise over $800.00 in the raffle, last Saturday, that goes to Loaves and Fishes. In addition, our warm-hearted families donated over 3,600 pounds of food to that organization in that one day! It took one of those huge storage bins and a truck to haul it all away! Again, all those coats donated to the Spanish National Honor Society represented more coats than I have ever seen in any coat drive! To top it off, the Burton family had them all cleaned for us! Ms. Silva, the parent volunteer who spearheads much of the Society's organizational movements, wants to join me in a shout out to the whole Spanish Honor Society, and wants to remind people that this Saturday they will be at Our Bridge For Kids collecting coats and blankets for the last time for the Spanish Honor Society fall community service. It will be from 10 to 2 at 3925 Willard Farrow Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215
All the students and their parents have worked really hard to make this happen. There has been one parent at every shift for the National Spanish Honor Society coat drive, and a lot of other parents have help with hauling the donations and separating stuff that they can use and then taking the stuff that they cannot use to the Crisis Assistance Ministry store on Spratt Street.
Also the officers have been very involved in planning and their meeting regularly every month.
I wanted to thank the PTO for the way they distributed holiday cheer to our teaching staff, cafeteria workers, custodial staff, and administrators, this week! PTO, you must have worked for days on the gift bags, and I can tell you that the joy it brought to all involved was palpable. We have the best PTO ever!
Today, all teacher grades are due. I have heard from a few parents that teachers are no longer accepting late work. Well, they really can't.
Teachers had to tell students when the last day to turn in late work would be, and then they could not accept any more. They literally can't, as this weekend is a PowerSchool Maintenance weekend, and Monday, grades are stored. So all the grades have to be locked, and teachers are not able to go back in at all to enter more grades as of this afternoon. They honestly do not have time to grade late work at this time.
We are working to help, and if your student is in difficulty, please reach out to a school counselor, administrator, or your child's teacher. I can and will jump in, but the teacher is on the front line and can be of most assistance. Thank you!
This Friday, the 18th from 1:00 to 3:30, will be your next chance to turn in your current chromebook and cord for a brand new chromebook. Please be sure to bring not just your current chromebook and cord, but also a sticky note or index card with your student's id number on it.
Your route will be different this time, as we ask that you enter from the last entrance on Celia street and then drive up towards the auditorium past the trailers. We will direct you as you go. The process does take some time, but we will get you through as quickly as we can.
The next time we will do this will be sometime in January.
Hello, Parents and Teachers. This is your principal, apologizing profusely for some erroneous information I put out -- with the best of intentions. Ms. Warren, our Registrar, has to have all grades in and verified by the 21st, and CMS has come out with a notice saying that teachers should have all their grades entered by the 18th. That means I can't give students that 18th date for asynchronous work. Teachers have to have time to get their grades in, so they are under a great deal of stress, and that announcement I made didn't make it any better. Still, unless you have a makeup exam on Friday or Monday, I am encouraging teachers to allow students to just check in, because it is still a state counted day, and I am asking teachers to just listen in and allow students to work on whatever they want or just socialize. Our NJHS is helping us restructure our SEL with clubs and other activities to keep our students active and engaged. You will hear more about that, shortly. In the meantime, I am so sorry, once again, for the well-intentioned, but erroneous message.
Good morning, Northwest. There has been a state wide issue with Google, this morning. It is on and off again, and the CMS Tech Team is aware. If your student can log on to Internet Explorer, Safari, or Mozilla, this may be not be a complete fix, but it may help. Worst case is students make up exams on Friday, during the makeup days. I had planned to have Friday and Monday as asynchronous days for all students and teachers. They are both state days, and counted for attendance, so students would still have to check in and then are free to work on anything missing on Friday, or socialize on Monday, but they still must be counted present, and they would have to take any missing exams. The district will let us know when the system is up and running consistently, again.
Hello, Northwest! Wow! Today, we had over 700 vehicles drive through to pick up new chrome books in exchange for the old one! What a wonderful thing it was to see our students and their parents! The line was long, but the process went quickly. Parents and students didn't seem to mind, as Santa was there, Mr. Lawler was directing traffic, teachers and Dr. Lockhart were at chrome book stations, cars were decorated, holiday music was blaring, and folks had the opportunity to drop off canned goods for Loaves and Fishes and donate coats, blankets, toys, and shoes to the Spanish National Honor Society! I have never in my life seen such a huge amount of coats for any coat drive, and it warmed my heart to see so much food being donated. Our PTO had arrived early to decorate the front and the side of the school, and sold raffle tickets for a chance to win a 65 inch TV! They sold scads of SWAG. TAG was well represented, as was Visual Arts Boosters! Both were selling their SWAG, as well! I tell you, I was so proud of our parents for following directions and for giving so much from their hearts!
We will have another exchange day. Santa won't be there, but our new chrome books will be! We will give you that information, soon. Thanks, again, for everything! To the teachers and staff who followed Mr Nagel's lead in the organization of the event, to the parent volunteers, and most importantly to the parents who brought their students by to see us from their cars, thank you! We needed this. It felt good.
This is a quick reminder that tomorrow, Northwest students will have the opportunity to meet Santa who will be distributing brand new in the box student Chromebooks from 11-3. Please bring your old chromebook and power cord.
We are also selling booster wear and collecting donations for Loaves & Fishes Food Donation Collection. Our National Spanish Honors Society is collecting new & gently used children’s coats, winter accessories, and blankets that will benefit Bridge for Kids. Donations should be in your trunk if possible.
You must remain in your car at all times, wearing a mask.
Volunteers and staff should park in the back student lot and arrive around 10:00. No one else should arrive before 11:00. Thank you for your donations and for helping us to swiftly swap out our older Chromebooks for the brand new devices!
NWSA Families and Friends, please join us for a night of premieres as the Dance Department puts on its Virtual Honor Society and Winter Dance Concert Watch Party this Friday, December 11th! It begins at 7 PM, but you must subscribe to the NWSA Dance Department YouTube Channel to watch and participate in the live chat. Subscribe at https://bit.ly/NWSADance
Hello, This is Melody Sears your Principal with some exciting announcements. This coming Saturday, December 12th for ONE DAY ONLY you will have the opportunity to meet Santa who will be distributing brand new in the box student Chromebooks.
This ONE DAY event will run from 11 am - 3pm.
We are asking Middle School families to arrive 11am - 1pm and High school 1pm - 3 pm.
You will need to bring your old Chromebook and the power cord as the new Chromebooks use a different type of power cord.
The event is being hosted by our PTO, Theater, Dance, and Visual Arts Boosters who will be decorating the drive through in the holiday spirit. Also, during this ONE DAY ONLY event we will be doing a Loaves & Fishes Food Donation Collection where you can bring items that are on Loaves & Fishes priority needs
Canned Meat: Tuna, Chicken, etc...
Canned Fruit: low sugar;
Pastas - Canned or Dry Boxed; Cereals - low sugar;
Low Sodium Canned Vegetables; and Corn Muffin Mix.
No Glass Please.
Additionally, our National Spanish Honors Society will be collecting new & gently used children’s coats, winter accessories, and blankets that will benefit Bridge for Kids.
We are asking that all families enter the campus from the main entrance on Beatties Ford Rd. You will wind down the interior street past the auditorium and towards the trailers where there will be several stations. In order to keep this line moving quickly:
We are going to have several staff members collecting and issuing new Chromebooks.
We are requesting that on a sticky note or index card you CLEARLY write the student ID number and name.
Do not attach that to the Chromebook as one station will be collecting the Chromes before you proceed to the next station handing out the new Chromes.
It is at the second station you will hand the sticky note/index card to staff.
After the Chromebooks are taken care of you will have the option of leaving campus or continuing on towards the gym where you can drop off your food and winter item donations. We are asking that the items for donation be in your trunk and that you pop open the trunk in order for volunteers to retrieve.
Lastly, several of the boosters will be selling booster merchandise before leaving campus. Those vehicles will have the opportunity to pull over to the side to prevent a traffic backup.
At no time during this event can passengers in vehicles leave their vehicle. We are also requiring that while on campus during this event, all passengers in the vehicle be wearing masks. Feel free to decorate your vehicles.
Thank you for your donations and for helping us to swiftly swap out our older Chromebooks for the brand new devices!
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears. I just got out of an amazing holiday piano concert with some of our talented students and their incredible teachers, Ms. Stonell and Mr. Lafreniere! I wanted to give you just a quick call to tell you that if you have sent me a voicemail message or an email, or if you have left me a message at the front desk in the last few days, and you have not heard from me, there is a very good reason. Ms. Warren and I are busy trying to process the 683 requests to switch or remain in attendance rotations for January, along with making sure Transportation has what they need to process bus requests. Plus, the deadline for the first round of teacher observations is right on top of us, so we are unusually busy. Never fear! As soon as we get things tidied up, we will jump right back into communication mode. I should begin plowing through any backlogged messages by tomorrow evening. I hope you are safe and well!
Hello Northwest:
Enclosed in the email and on our webpage is the first of three videos giving details on the return of in-person learning. This is a brief introduction to the protocols that will be in place to inform your choice of either in-person or remote learning. Remember that if you want to change your status, you must email becky.warren@cms.k12.nc.us and m.sears@cms.k12.nc.us by the end of 11/30. In addition, regardless of your status please take the transportation survey located on the webpage as well as HERE.
CMS Eats at Home
Pickup for meal bundles this week will be held Tuesday, Nov. 24, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Meal bundles are available for any child 18 and under at no charge every Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 32 locations. This week it will be Tuesday, the same time.
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with new news. CMS has put out a brand new transportation form. What's new? There is a question on the form, asking if the student needs transportation that wasn't there, before. So, if you have made a switch from full remote to an in-person rotation or in-person to full remote, you have to go to the CMS page and under "Attention Families," fill out the transportation form to let transportation know if you need a bus. All students who originally signed up for in-person rotation who are going to only show up in cars need to go online to that same site to fill out that transportation form to let CMS know that you will not be needing a bus for second semester.
Those persons who intend to switch from in-person to full remote or full remote to in-person must FIRST email me at m.sears@cms.k12.nc.us and copy in Ms. Warren, our Registrar, at becky.warren@cms.k12.nc.us. Ms. Warren will reply to you with your correct rotation, which is A, B, or C for in-person, or D for full remote. If you are scheduled for an A, B, or C in-person rotation already, you still need to go in and fill out the form to ensure you get a bus or let them know you won't need transportation, if you will only be coming to school in a car. Those persons who originally signed up for full remote way back at the first of the year do not have to fill out the form at all. (And aren't you happy about that!?) Now, it is important that you know your correct rotation, because that form is going to ask you for it, and you will need your student ID to access that form. Now, you can get your rotation in your PowerSchool account, and try not to call Ms. Warren, who is now extremely busy. You must get these forms filled out by November 30th.
The revised CMS calendar is online, so you can see where you fall in the in-person rotations to come into the school building.
Well, I guess it's true that change is the only constant. I do wish it would slow down a bit, though.
Transportation Enrollment for Second Semester (begins Jan. 5, 2021)
Families must inform the district about students’ transportation needs for the second semester. An enrollment form is posted on the CMS website here and will be posted on school websites. Families will need their student ID number to complete the transportation enrollment form.
The transportation choice will last throughout the second semester and until the end of the 2020-2021 school year.
CMS needs to know the transportation needs for all students – grades pre-K – 12th grade whose families intend for them to attend school in-person during the second semester.

Hello, Northwest!
Please join our virtual PTO meeting November 19th at 7:00 PM. Go to Friendsofnorthwest.com.
Principal Sears will be with us to do a Q&A. We will also conclude our membership drive with a fun raffle. Join anytime between now and the end of the PTO meeting to be entered to win a NWSA swag bag valued at over $100.
Hello, Parents! Tonight, I sent out the A Honor Roll notifications to students, and tomorrow evening, I plan to send out the A-B Honor Roll notifications. I am so pleased that we have so many, it takes just a bit longer for me to notify parents and students. My heart is just so full, right now, thinking of the students' hard work and valiant efforts in these terrible times. I am also proud of our students who are still reaching for those honor rolls. You know, I am finding that students who leave their cameras on, in lots of cases, get really good grades, so that might be a strategy you want to employ. You parents can insist on that from home, too.
Please stay tuned for honor roll updates. If you get a call from me, then you know you've made it. If you don't get one, and you feel that there is a mistake, please let me know. I do not think some of the grades updates from teacher grade changes may have all made it in, but that should not stop me from sending you a celebratory message of congratulations! So, do let me know if I make an omission.
Good Evening, Northwest.
Just an update for those of you who may have missed the board meeting on Tuesday. Soon, you will be getting a Parent Survey from CMS. You will be asked if you are having your student attend the brick and mortar building when school starts up on January 5th for students in the building, or if your student plans to be fully remote. The deadline for switching your options is now November 30th, and not December 4th, as was previously stated.
Please be on the lookout for the survey. More information about the survey will follow in the next several days. LC Superintendents received communication that each school is responsible to make sure every family is made aware of their opportunity to opt in or out of the Full Remote Academy. We are to ensure our school has a solid process in place to communicate the new deadline of November 30th and to document decisions in and out of the Full Remote Academy. Families with students attending in-person for second semester, should also respond to a transportation survey by end of day Monday, November 30. The survey will launch Monday, November 16. Students for whom the survey is not completed will default to their first semester attendance assignment, and, if attending in-person and eligible for transportation, will be included on a CMS bus route.
Currently, our school has spaced every classroom for the six feet of social distancing the Health Department is touting for safety.
I hope all of you remain safe and well.
I will be sending out a call to our honor roll students for first quarter. That will happen on Monday.
Hi:
One of our staff members, Ms. Binford (Hartsell) had her email hacked. Please do not open or respond to her emails. Have a great election day!
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, giving you some information. First, I want to let you know that the faculty has had input into the late work policy as impacted by COVID, and have come up with the following addendum to our original policy. After the school returns from this pandemic, the faculty opted to keep the original late work policy. For now, this addendum takes center stage in late work land.
Due to the concerns surrounding remote/virtual learning, teachers may use discretion with grading policies for late work, based on situations surrounding individual students that have been clearly communicated to the teacher by the student.
In addition, I know that there were many power outages across CMS, yesterday, as we were dealing with the weather dealt us by the latest hurricane. Of course, your child will be afforded grace for those power outages. Please students and parents, if your power went out and you were unable to stay in the class, email your teachers right away to get the assignments and any missed information.
Parents, your seventh grader and Senior need their immunizations, and our nursing staff and Registrar have been hard at work to get students notified. CMS has extended the deadline to December 30, because of Covid. After that, students without the required forms will not be able to attend school.
I have already been asked about PPE donations to the school. Yesterday, we were told that we would be using CMS approved and distributed products ONLY, and parent donations would not be taken, as it could be a liability issue in the face of this sickness. Nothing is stopping you from slipping a small bottle of hand sanitizer into your student’s book bag, or from you sending your student to school with a mask and a face shield.
Remember that if you have a water bottle, your student may need to bring this to school when we return. I think the PTO is selling those with our SWAG on them. There will be paper cups available for those who do not bring water bottles, because we can not drink from the fountains at school. We can only use the fountain to fill water bottles and paper cups.
More will be coming your way, but I don’t want to saturate you. I hope you have a lovely weekend!
Hello! This is your principal, letting you know that I understand that families got a message, this evening, from CMS about state tests being given at the school. I wanted to let you all know that this really does apply to many schools in our district, and it will apply to us when we have state mandated tests.
However, our school, a very rare bird in CMS, is NOT on a 4x4 schedule. Our classes are year long, and our EOC's, EOG's, and Work Keys testing for CTE will not be taking place until closer toward the end of the school year. Our classes are year long. We do have one lone Math III exception, and are handling that one.
Our mid term exams for all classes in grades 6-12 will be taken by students in the remote setting. Those exams will be given in December.
If we have individual testing this calendar year where students have to come in, we will let those students know, but right now, I can't think of any.
So those of you who were getting all anxious about the testing, well, you can calm down, now, and enjoy your evening. I am on the Roku device, trying to find any Sherlock Holmes movies I have not already seen. Do what makes you happy!
Greetings!

Hello, Northwest Families! This is your principal, with some news about grades for first quarter. First quarter ends on October 16. That is this coming Friday. October 20 is the day that teachers must have all grades in and verified. If students are getting in any missing assignments, it would be a very good idea for them to get those in this week, if not given an earlier date from some of their teachers, as teachers need time to grade and enter. Students, make sure you get teacher permission to make up that work!
Those students who have not done any work get "zero" until such assignments are completed and absences are verified as excused.
The District currently has a date of October 23 set in Canvas, after which both students AND teachers will no longer be able to modify assignments. This means the inability for students to even work on assignments, and for teachers to access and grade them.
I guess what I’m saying is that everything will be out of teacher’s hands. Students with very special circumstances, such as hospitalization, severe student illness, illness or death in the immediate family and so forth could turn in assignments late, but would have to get principal approval through the teachers and counselors in order for that to happen. I am asking that teachers keep copies of their assignments for students, just to be prudent. I am telling you now, so you will be able to prepare and use any extended time you may be allotted for assignments.
Thank you for your attention to this message.
Hello!
The district has some terrific resources for EL students and their families. Please take a look at the attached documents!

Hello, Northwest. This is your principal with some announcements that you are going to find very helpful. They concern transfer processes from or to Full Remote options for student learning second semester, Early Release Day, this coming Wednesday, October 7th, Parent Information Nights for Non-Native Speakers, and some wonderful resources for parents to include remote learning sites and more! The following message can be seen and the links accessed on the NWSA webpage, or on the Friends of Northwest page:
Requests for transfer into and out of the Full Remote Academy should be submitted in writing via email, fax or letter to the assigned school’s registrar before Friday, December 4, 2020. If approved, the change will be effective with the beginning of the second semester on January 4, 2021.
Requests to transfer into or out of the Full Remote Academy prior to the second semester will be handled at the school level and are not guaranteed. Requests may be approved if the school can reasonably accommodate the request without major disruptions to class size / scheduling and the request meets at least one criteria below:
a member of the household received a new medical diagnosis which puts the person in a high-risk category
a sudden change in access to childcare
a sudden change in the family’s finances or employment
a change in school assignment due to a move or approved transfer.
It is going to take a little time to process your requests to come back into the school at Northwest from Full Remote, due to our small size and ability to social distance in keeping with health regulations.
This Wednesday, October 7th, is Early Release Day.
In alignment with previous district practice, student dismissal on early release days will take place three hours prior to the school’s current dismissal time. If you have any school-specific questions, please reach out to your student’s grade level administrator.
The Learning & Language Acquisition Department is excited to announce a series of virtual family night webinars being offered throughout the 2020-2021 school year. These webinars will focus on important topics relevant for families including access to digital platforms, key information for remote and in-person learning, as well as available community resources to support English Learner students. The webinars will be offered in multiple languages throughout the course of the year. I will share the email flyer
with teachers, students, and families to promote these opportunities for continuous school and community engagement. I am asking that Ms. Slater and Ms. Bastionson of Friends of Northwest post the appropriate link, including the course catalogue, on our webpage and on the Friends of Northwest site.
Finally, I am happy to let you know of some pretty cool resources for students and parents, to include remote learning sites within CMS. Links for those resources, which you will probably have to download, first, will be on our webpage and hopefully also on the Friends of Northwest site. These resources include:
Community Partner Learning
Canvas Community Guide
Remote Learning Sites
Community Asset and Collaboration Directory.
Thank you. As we receive updates, we will do our best to get those to you.
Hello, Northwest. I got messages from teachers, today, concerning something I never thought I would see, but these are strange times. We have some parents who are going into their child's classroom virtually and trying to talk with the student's teacher about grades and curriculum. If you need to talk to your student's teacher about grades or curriculum, please reach out to the teacher. If the teacher does not reach back out to you within a reasonable amount of time -- say 48 hours, not including weekends, then email the grade level administrator -- Dr. Lockhart or Mr. Lawler -- that you have not heard back. Yes, I know that CMS says 24 hours, but I am getting email deluged during these strange times, and I can just imagine what the teachers are dealing with. If you need a conference with your students' teachers, please contact your student's counselors.
If you don't hear back from me, it is not because I am ignoring you. I probably have missed your email among the over a hundred a day. Just call the school in a case like that.
Please, parents, do not try to communicate verbally with the teacher during the class. Your student's computer and account are for them, alone. Thank you!
There seems to have been some confusion about our last message pertaining to hotspots. Only families that received an email from Mr. Nagel are to come to the school to pick up a hotspot, if they have not done so yet. If you did not receive an email telling you to come, it means that we are currently out of hotspots. New requests came in since the last message was sent out and once we have a hotspot for those families, Mr. Nagel or Ms. Slater will email you and let you know to come by the school and pick it up. Again, if you are in need of a hotspot and have not heard from someone telling you we have one waiting for you, do NOT come by the school. Feel free to email Ms. Slater with questions.
If you completed the Sprint 1Million Project Parent/Guardian Consent Form requesting a hotspot and are still in need of one and have not yet received one, you should have gotten an email from Mr. Nagel letting you know that it is ready for you to pick up at the school. All hotspots not picked up by Friday will go back into our inventory. It is important that all of our students have access to the internet in order to attend their classes and complete their schoolwork. If you have not requested one, but do not have reliable internet, please complete the form at
bit.ly/nwsa1million
Pick-up is 9-2 questions please email Mr. Nagel or Ms. Slater
Hello Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with a few messages of importance, concerning your student's learning day.
We hope that you are well and that your family continues to be safe and healthy. In response to feedback, CMS is providing a community-friendly document to support parent, student and caregiver understanding about the district expected designations for instructional minutes across content areas and grade levels. The minutes represented on this document are guidelines for “Live” and “On Your Own” remote instruction. There may be times when a teaching and learning session runs long or ends early, but it should not exceed or fall below ten minutes of the indicated times unless there are extenuating circumstances communicated by your child’s school.
These resources entitled Remote Learning Daily Minutes are located on the CMS website (www.cms.k12.nc.us). Click on Health and Wellness and then on the Remote Learning Daily Minutes link. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Northwest's appropriate grade level principals.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
Good day, Northwest! Here are a few announcements that contain information to help you plan. Seniors, be sure to stop by the school on Monday, September 28th, between the hours of 8:30 and 12:30 to pick up your English IV books and graduation packets. Dr. Lockhart will be at the entrance of student services so park in the back and enter through the cafeteria courtyard area. If you cannot get here Monday, Mrs. Meek will give instructions on Canvas for how and when you can get your materials.
Parents of Math I students, we gave you two windows to come and pick up your student's math 1 workbooks, but realize that some of you were not able to make it from 9 to 12. With that in mind, Ms. Sears will be at the school, at the front entrance, between 4:30 and 6 PM for you all to pick up those materials after work.
Thanks to all of you who attended our virtual Curriculum Night. Teacher videos for the night, including mine, will be up for several more days, so you still have an opportunity to visit your student's teachers. Just go to our home page, online, and click on the link under Announcements.
Our HVAC system is among the first in line to get upgrades to keep the fresh air flowing, and those should be done before the students begin to come back. For middle school, that is Nov. 23. Members of our administrative team did a practice run-though of the safety audit items for back to school readiness. The itemized list was quite lengthy, and we have taken extra measures to make sure of the safety of our students and staff. We will be recording videos for you to view in the near future, so you and your student will be well-versed in what to do, once you arrive to campus.
Just a last note about classes. CMS does not require that students attend classes with videos on; however, we strongly encourage this practice. Our school is a performing arts school, so this is necessary most of the time. In addition, we are finding that there are some students who are checking in, turning off their cameras, and then "checking out". For those reasons, some teachers may ask that all their students attend class with cameras on. If there is a reason your student does not want to be on camera, a simple reach-out to the teacher should clear up any difficulty. I am encouraging all parents to check PowerSchool, weekly, as we are asking that our teachers record grades weekly and sync Canvas with PowerSchool. It is important that parents know their student's grades and how their students are being assessed.
Thank you. I hope you have a lovely weekend.
This is a reminder that you can join us Thursday, September 24th 4:00-5:00pm via Zoom to learn more about Northwest School of the Arts! Virtual info sessions offer interested students a chance to view live or previously recorded webinars about what life is like here at NWSA! There will be brief presentation to share information about our academics, arts, and the audition process. Following the presentation there will be a Q and A session. Thank you!
Follow the link below to sign up for a virtual information session.
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, reminding you about Curriculum Night tomorrow evening at 6 PM. This year, our night is virtual. That means if you have a conflict, you will be able to log on after the event concludes to stop by your student's teachers' video presentations to put a name with a face and hear about the class. We can leave these up for a day or three, just for your convenience. In order to attend, you will need to know the names of your student's teachers and the class period your student attends, as that will be the link you will click to enter the class.
Just go to the NWSA website, where Ms. Slater, our Media Specialist, has this all linked in for your viewing -- well, by tomorrow evening, anyway! Here is the direct link, below. It’ll also be available on the school website under Announcements at the appropriate time.
http://bit.ly/nwsa2020curriculumnight
I hope this will be an informative event for everyone, and that we will be able to use such a medium in the future for various events. Let's see how this goes, first, though.
Hello, Northwest Families. Progress reports are due to go out on Monday and Tuesday of this coming week. Some of our teachers may be navigating PowerSchool at different points when it comes to sharing a progress report through that program. With that in mind, I am letting you know that while some of our teachers will be sending out progress reports via PowerSchool, there may be some teachers who will be relying on parents to open up PowerSchool to check their student's progress. At this stage of the strange year we are having, going paperless makes a great deal of sense, and we are counting on parents to check PowerSchool for grades more regularly. The timing of this message is not ideal, as CMS has closed up PowerSchool for the weekend for maintenance, but you should be able to check your student’s grades by Monday afternoon. I am telling our teachers that all work collected so far for this quarter should be graded and in the system, so you will all know where your student stands in the courses. Your student's teachers may have assigned informal work that has yet to be graded over the past several days, and that may not be completely graded and in, but all grades, with very few exceptions should be in PowerSchool. Teachers have been encouraged to have one formal and about four informal assessments by this time.
If your child has been given an informal class participation grade, you should have a conversation with your student about the criteria of the assessment. Teachers should have criteria for all grades, including informal ones, so parents and students can see how that grade was derived. If the student can not explain the criteria, please contact the teacher for the grade explanation. Should your student appear to be in difficulty, please reach out to the student's teacher or teachers to schedule a conference or email to ask questions. Should you need a teacher conference with multiple teachers, you may set one up by contacting your student's counselor.
For future reference, you may use the link I am sending you to connect with PowerSchool on your mobile device: https://www.cms.k12.nc.us/families/Pages/PowerSchool.aspx
Thank you to the over 60 parents we had in attendance at our last PTO meeting! I think it was a record-breaker, and the parents could not have been more lovely!
I hope all of you will enjoy the virtual Curriculum Night we have planned. Our teachers have been busily recording videos for the event. I hope you stop by my recording, too, as it contains some back to the building information for you and for our students! More information on how to connect for Curriculum Night this Tuesday evening will be coming to you.
Thank you for the wonderful way you have responded to our school in every instance. We love our students, and their parents are beyond amazing!
Hello, Parents and Students of Northwest!
This is just a short reminder, in the wake of the recent Board decision to have students return to school in phases. Parents are asking to switch from Full Remote Academy to regular school. That is not possible at this time. You will have the ability to switch at the semester, per CMS.
When students return, they will do so in phases, middle school students, then high school students, on rotations that run students designated A route one week, B the next, and C the next, and then comes the high school students, grouped three weeks apart from the middle school. Students who ride a bus must get an attestation form signed weekly by their parent. No more than 24 students will be on any bus during the rotation phases, and must sit one student per seat. All students will be again screened after disembarking from the bus and prior to entering our buildings. Students must wear masks. Students who arrive in carpool must be screened by a trained staff member prior to exiting their cars.
We are weeks and weeks away from this, but I wanted you to have it in your minds, now, so it wouldn't be the first you had heard of the procedures. Thanks! I hope you can join me at the PTO meeting, this evening. You all got that notification in an email from me, last week.
Thanks, and good night!
Hello, Parents!
There will be a PTO meeting that will take place on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 PM. Hello. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with the second part of the emergency contact process that was promised, yesterday. Northwest School of the Arts has updated our district message software with updated student contact information. You’re receiving this message because we have this phone number on file for your student. This is the number we will use to communicate with you on behalf of your student. Thank you and good luck on a successful new school year!
Hello. Northwest School of the Arts is in process of updating our district messaging software with updated student contact information. You’re receiving this message because we have this phone number on file for your student. You should receive another message, much the same as this, on Friday, 9/11. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE THIS SECOND MESSAGE, please contact Northwest School of the Arts’ front office and ask to update the contact information for your student. IF YOU DO RECEIVE THE MESSAGE on Friday, 9/11, no further action is necessary.
Good Evening, Northwest. Please pay close attention to this message, as it contains some vital information concerning our students’ ability to utilize technology in our learning environment. Tomorrow, in home room SEL time, teachers will be gathering information from students who are having difficulty connecting with the learning, whether it is that they have no operational chrome book, no hot spot if one is needed, whether they have lost internet or are having other problems with their internet at home, and more. Once we know which students are having difficulty, and the type of difficulty through home room teacher reports, the students’ regular ed, including elective teachers, will be required to explain how they are meeting the children’s educational needs in the absence of such technology, whether it is work packets, phoned information to the student and/or parent, and so forth. I know that teachers are working with some of our students in difficulty, and CMS is placing this step as a means to ensure that every child has access to education. This report is due to CMS Friday morning, so time is of utmost importance.
I am asking that if your student has any of the difficulties I just mentioned, please get in touch, via your work email or other means to inform that teacher. This is incredibly important.
Also if students don’t have a school Chromebook, whether they think they need one or not, to go by the school between 9 and 2 during the week and pick one up. There are some parents and students who may be using their own personal devices, but I am telling you that only the chrome books are set up for the kinds of testing and other programs your child will need to access, so it is a requirement that they have an operational one in their possession.
Thank you so very much for your time with this. We want to make sure we are providing every child with educational opportunities.
This is a message for for all Visual Arts Majors and Non-majors enrolled in a current Visual Arts class.
The Visual Arts Supply packets will be available for pickup on Wednesday September 9th from 1:30-4:30pm in front of the gym building. Due to high numbers, families are asked to adhere to the following schedule, students with the last name A-I are to arrive 1:30-2:30 PM, last names J-R 2:30-3:30 PM, last names R-Z 3:30-4:15 PM. Please use the first Celia Ave entrance and follow the signs for the carpool line. Tents will be set up in front of Mrs. Schmit’s classroom. Families are requested to pick up supplies during the pick-up time on Wednesday if at all possible. If you are not able to do so, please contact your student’s teacher in Canvas to make other arrangements.
Hello Northwest:
The parent required forms are bundled up in a nice Google forms document for you. They include the student code of conduct sign-off form, the NWSA Academic Probation Policy and Dress Code, and the Computer Use form. Please review and sign these using the Google link provided.

Hello, Northwest! Great news! We just got in chrome books at the school, so if you need one,m you can go to the website and fill out the form from the link so that we can arrange for you to drop by to get one if you need one!
We do not have more hot spots, but if you have one that you are no longer needing, someone at this school surely does, so please bring it by the school. Right away would be good! We will be getting in more hot spots, soon!
The following is a message from Ms. Slater:
CMS & NWSA do not have hotspots available for all students. Hotspots are available on a first come, first served, and highest need basis (highest need being the most important).
NWSA has no more hotspots on hand and CMS is working to distribute what they have on hand, funded by the CMS Foundation. Last we heard, the need within our district is currently higher than the number of devices.
These devices are for parents and students who absolutely cannot afford internet or who do not have access to internet at all.
Hotspots at NWSA are provided by the Sprint 1Million Connected Grant project. The information below is required for Sprint. Sprint hotspots are limited in data and do not have full or fast coverage in all areas. Your network and home internet will always work better than the NWSA Sprint hotspots. The devices in this grant are not intended to supplement or provide relief to those with a current internet plan.
If you are paying for internet via your cable service provider or phone carrier, it is the company's responsibility to provide you the best coverage and internet service. If your internet is inconsistent or does not meet your demand, contact your ISP. Remember that some phone plans come with hotspot capabilities on your phone.
If you already pay for internet, here are a couple ways to ensure your connection using a CMS Chromebook is not interrupted and learning continues during "school" hours:
- If your phones have an unlimited plan, turn off the WiFi.
- Temporarily disconnect other technology connected to your WiFi such as smart TVs, thermostats, Alexa, gaming systems and other smart technologies.
- Purchase a WiFi extender for areas of the house that are further away from the home router.
- Do not have any unnecessary browser tabs open during video conferences.
Thank you, and have a great evening!
Hello, Northwest. Just a little note about common sense to add to my last message. Right after that 30 minute lunch time, students may have a class that requires them to sing, dance, do artwork with their hands, or play musical instruments -- even speak a foreign language. In those cases, I trust students will use their common sense and participate fully in those classes. When in doubt, ask the teacher, students! If you must participate, just put the sandwich down for a bit. It will still be there! Have a great night!
Greetings, Northwest! This is your principal, with short but important messages. First, thank you to every parent who has lifted up a staff member, today. It helps. It really does.
Secondly, I have put out reminders to our teachers to be mindful of the time spent in direct instruction, and to watch chat boxes and emails from students with questions. I have asked them to meet in their PLC's to look at the amount of homework they are giving, and I have asked them, if possible, to build in some stretch breaks for kids as part of the asynchronous learning process.
CMS requires a certain amount of time for direct and indirect instruction. It requires 45 minutes of SEL time every day, now. There are some teachers who really must give homework nearly every evening. It does not have to be a lengthy assignment, but requirements for some of these classes are such that homework is a necessity.
Your students are not used to working on a computer screen for as long as they have been lately, but please consider that neither have these teachers. With the time constraints placed by CMS, the consideration for time between classes, and all the rest, not even including the curricular demands, our teachers are spending hours creating online lessons. I have been visiting classes, and I can tell you that they are doing a valiant job. I have been giving them all the grace I can find, and I am so proud of the fact that so many of you are doing the same.
The truth is, though, that no matter what happens, someone is not going to be happy. Teachers have listened to criticism if they teach too much, not enough, not rigorous enough, too hard, assign homework, don't assign homework, and let me just say that our small school incorporates middle and high school, so adhering to the state and CMS requirements has been a balancing act with our schedule. However, that schedule has been vetted, and has really been proclaimed as close to perfect as we could get it. I know we have a thirty minute lunch time. If your student needs to go outside and run off their wigglies, and then eat lunch, I do not mind as long as they show their faces for attendance to their next class on time, and then go off screen to chew. They can start the video of their faces again when they finish. It is very possible to eat and learn at the same time. I know of some really great teachers in history who fed multitudes of people who were in the process of learning valuable lessons.
Again, we give you grace, you extend grace to us. Our teachers are breaking their backs to get this right for our kids.
Also, we were promised that we should be getting our repaired chrome books back on Wednesday, and we learned we will get more hot spots in, soon.
Stay tuned, and thank you for trusting us with your most prized asset.
Hello, Parents, Students, and Teachers! This is your principal, Melody Sears, with more updates.
The schedule for after the first ten days of school begins on Monday, August 31st. I have given you a copy, and it is posted on the Northwest website, online, and on the PTO Friends of Northwest online site, just like all my robo-call messages that are emailed out are posted there. That schedule is the new one we will follow, and it is going to remain the same while all of us are learning at home. Parents wanted to make sure students have “wiggle room” time in between classes, and I listened and built in all that I could, with the exception of the lunch time. The schedule says students have 30 minutes, as of August 31, but if you take the five minutes before and after for transition, it’s closer to 40. Students who must pick up bundled meals once a week need to inform their teachers in advance, and are responsible for turning in any work missed. I am asking teachers to extend grace to those students, but students or their parents must inform the teachers a day in advance. All the other blocks have ten minutes in between. CMS expectations for time have been adhered to, and that includes the Social-Emotional Learning, or, as it is called, SEL, block of time. For Middle School and High School, CMS has worked to provide teachers with lessons for that block of time. High School and Middle School teachers have been sent those links. In High School SEL blocks, there are co-teachers.
When it is time for SEL, students will log into their home room teacher’s link. The assigned home room teacher is responsible for the daily attendance, which will not show up in PowerSchool, but will be put into a google document so that homes can be called. Currently, the expectation is that all students will attend that block and will participate in the tasks assigned. There are no grades.
Title IX teaching, the teaching about sexual harassment, which is required by The Office of Civil Rights, will begin on Friday, September 4, in SEL block. Students will be required to pass a short CMS-designed quiz on the instruction, just as in years past. Mr. Lawler sent out the links for the parent overview, last night, and told you about the parent opt out form, on the CMS site and on our site. If you want your student to opt out of those lessons, you need to have filled out the opt out form by midnight, August 31.
Our school is currently out of hot spots. There are parents who are on the waiting list for those. We also have no available chrome books to change out. We will let you know when the ones from the repair depot arrive and when we get more hot spots. It would expedite a technology issue if parents first reported it on our Technology Reporting Form. We hear the frustration. We are frustrated that we are out! Please do not come to the school to get these, at this time, as we are out. And please do not fuss at our people. They can’t control it, and they don’t have it.
We are getting the forms, like the media release forms, opt out forms, and others on our site via a link so parents can go in and sign off, rather than sign a million paper copies. Students are not allowed to sign those!
Starting on Tuesday, if you come to the school and want to park in the bus lot, please park along the fence. We will have about twenty buses in our lot for meal distribution and other types of distribution for the district. You don’t want your car to get hit.
Thank you for emailing me the things you notice that our folks are doing that you think are really good. I pass those along! People tend to replicate the things we praise, and that makes it better for everyone!
Thank you for giving us grace, every day.

Hello, Parents and Students. Well, happy Monday! There has been a nation-wide Zoom crash, this morning. I sent out messages to teachers on a work-around to try, but some of your classes might be held via google meets. The trouble is that teachers may not be able to tell students which platform to use. What to do, if you can't meet your class and teacher? When in doubt, email your teacher. I am hoping everyone is able to get on at this time, as Zoom personnel are scrambling.
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with some updates.
First, let me apologize for feeling frustrated, even though I was still trying to show grace, with some of our people for not getting correct emails or phone numbers to us. Now, I know that some of you have honestly tried, but the system did not update your information. We have calls in to the Help Desk to ask why, when we put in the corrected emails, the 24 hour update is kicking those back out and replacing them with the old ones or none at all. We never had this problem before. We think we found a solution. We will get this corrected.
It is not for lack of trying. I had a meeting with people in the school, including our Registrar, just now, to try to get to the bottom of it. I also have been in contact with several persons in Technology and at the Help Desk to try to resolve this issue. In eight years, I have not encountered this problem. We will get it corrected.
Here is another message about schedule changes. They all need to be completed by tonight at 11:59 PM, and entering one request ought to do it. Students should not assume that counselors need three or four schedule change requests if students do not hear back, immediately, and they don’t need to email the counselors to ask when these will be done, as then the counselors have to stop and answer the emails, taking away time from the schedule change requests.
This has been some week! Teaching and learning took place in our classes, though. Our kids were great! I want to remind you that it is necessary for students to share their screens in class for attendance purposes, unless there is a special circumstance that parents can discuss with their students' teachers. Teachers are navigating the admit button on our Zoom classes so that we we hopefully have fewer "Zoom bombers," who get into the classrooms and use foul language. That is happening, nation wide, and one of the cyber detectives in CMS tells me that it's because some of our students are posting zoom or Canvas links on social media. That's a definite "no-no". When investigating "zoom bombers," it's harder to find them than it is to locate who posted on social media.
Online teaching and learning has been what I'd call successful, at this point. We still have some bugs to work out, but we will. Thank you for being our partner in this time of great change and great opportunity.
Good Morning, Parents and Students! The state's NCEDCLOUD is having issues, this morning. Please remind your students to use the work-arounds we used, before. All will be well. In case you forgot, they should try going into the following: canvas.cmslearns.org or cms.instructure.com. You can also go to this link -- Students DO NOT need to go through NCEdCloud to access Canvas! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ateLFewznxtbvIcVKPGnJin3OkFq0vAetghNY4tgI6o/edit?usp=sharing
If you did not sign up at the school with an email, you will not get this link. I recommend you update.
Hi. this is a copy of what I received, this morning, from our zone office. Please check it out if you are trouble-shooting at home concerning technology.
Technology Trouble Shooting- The CMS Call Center has received multiple calls regarding password resets, trouble with logging in, and how to support kids with Chromebooks and Canvas. The link below is from the district to help provide families with Canvas and Chromebook login.
https://www.cms.k12.nc.us/Pages/Connecting_From_Home.aspx
Please ensure that the front office secretaries and teachers have this information to assist with responding to parent and student questions. Additionally, samples of documents from schools are in the links below in order to help with trouble shooting.
Good Morning Northwest,
Thank you for your patience as our team worked through the challenges presented by the technology issues that were caused by the state server. I wanted to send a reminder that all students are expected to participate in synchronous instruction with their teachers. In the event that a student is unable to log into live lessons due to device/connectivity issues (including state level connectivity concerns), isolated home-related occurrences, or longer-term hardships, the family/student must inform the teacher so that additional considerations for accurately noting student daily attendance are utilized, including:
• Completes daily lesson/ module(s) as assigned by teacher, and submits classwork within 1-day of assigned date
• Evidence of engagement with course content (module completion, posts to discussion boards, enrollment in 100% asynchronous courses, etc.)
• Two-way course content-related communication between student & teacher
• Absent for live online instruction but watches recording of instruction, assigned videos or reading selections, or other class assignments on same day
In addition, please remember that there is information on our home page that gives you the link to the form you fill out for technology issues. Ms. Slater and Mr. Nagel are currently trying to respond to each one. Know that you may request a hot spot, but we are currently out of them. Contacting our front office will not get you to your student's Canvas class link. The front office does not have that information, and you need to contact your student's teacher for that if you can not find the information on our home page.
This is new to everyone. With grace, we will get this challenge under our belts and move forward. We are anticipating the ordering of more hotspots.
Hello NWSA Family:
CMS is short Hotspots and so is Sprint. Hence, we are asking that if you have one you are not using, or if you have more than one, please return it to NWSA ASAP as there are families at our school without the ability to connect to the web. If you requested a Hotspot but already have one for another sibling, please email Ms. Slater ASAP so we can take your name off the list. IF your family has wifi in your home and you are concerned about it being slow, but either took a Hotspot or requested one, please consider returning it for a family without any ability to connect or letting Ms. Slater know to take you off our list.
Hello, Northwest Students, Parents, and Teachers.
Someone said to me, today, that the crash of the system, this morning made today seem terrible. To make matters worse, our power went off just long enough to cancel out programs our teachers and students were on, and we had to really work to get them back up. The crashes sent us scrambling for answers and working to find solutions to situations for which we hadn't planned.
That could have been awful, but it wasn't. Those crashes were actually blessings, and let me tell you why. Our teachers worked as one unit all across the school, to communicate swiftly to uncover workable solutions. Administration called not once, but twice, with a work-around solution to the crashes, and they worked! Parents were patient, and thankful that we found solutions so quickly. They were full of grace in a terrible situation, reminding us how very special and wonderful our parents are. Instead of getting angry and frustrated, everyone pulled together, and teaching and learning was observed in every single period, today.
Thank you, Northwest Community, for this very great gift. Tomorrow will be even better!
Parents and students, while NCEDCLOUD is down across the state, try the following links to log into home room: canvas.cmslearns.org and then click on go to login portal and then login with Google.
Alternatively, you can go to cms.instructure.com
There is more than one way to skin a cat.
Good morning! Well, I guess that is debatable, right now. There is a state wide issue with NC Ed Cloud, and the system is down. I am telling our staff to log in using Google, so it still may be possible to get on in the next few minutes. It could be longer, but we hope not. Please encourage your students to continue trying to log on. I have instructed our teachers to go in, using google at Canvas.cmslearns.org. Thank you. It is not our fault, but I am apologizing, anyway. Grace and kindness, Everyone!
Good Evening, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with just a few important announcements and thank-you's.
First, I want to thank all of our teachers. Over the past weeks, they have been champions, building their courses, attending hours and hours of training on new ways to deliver lessons, getting ready for and participating in open house, handing out supplies to drive-by students and parents, and trying to be patient, as the rest of our workbooks, supplies, and other learning materials dribble in. They have reached out to personally contact parents, and have read about a thousand emails, each giving them some new task to do in order to prepare for the moment your children arrive via their computers. Our Media Specialist and our Arts Director have teamed up to distribute technology for long hours in the heat, and to figure out ways for the returned broken devices to get repaired, quickly. They did this with the help of our secretarial staff and our Auditions Coordinator. Our Reistrar has been working way past regular hours to get enrollment exactly right. Our counselors have had to smash building the full remote academy numbers into the schedule, alongside our master scheduler, giving them precious little time to work on the over 200 schedule change requests, but they have all worked valiantly. They enlisted the assistance of our API, Dr. Lockhart, and our Academic Facilitator, Ms. June, to help with schedule changes. Everyone has been on "go" for weeks to prepare for tomorrow.
Next, I want to remind you that school starts at 9:15 AM, online. Students do not come to the school in person, but report to their home room, via their computers. Mr. Lawler is getting all the home room links up on the Northwest Home Page. Most are up, and the rest will be there by tomorrow, so do not be upset if you can not access all of these at the moment. You should be able to by tomorrow.
In addition, I realize that not all our parents received a call from home room teachers, last week. If you will email the home room teacher and let them know a good daytime number and a good time to call between 9:15 AM and 4 PM, that would be helpful. Please copy me on the email. Thank you. It is so important for you to have all your updated information in our system. If you contact our Registrar, She will see that the information is corrected so that we may contact you. Our ability to contact you is vital during this learning online period of time.
From all accounts, our open house went well. Remember that I began communicating our Open House date and times on August 5th in connect ed calls and the parent newsletter, so most of you attended. If you did not have the chance to attend, we will still hold our Curriculum Night in September. If you were unable to connect in Zoom with a teacher during Open House Night, please email the teacher to get the information you need.
I will be dropping by classrooms, tomorrow, virtually, of course. This year is going to be so different, but the love we have for your children won't change. I look forward to seeing all our children in the morning!
Hello, Northwest.
We have had to make a slight revision to our bell schedule for the first ten days. The revision should add some minutes to one of the periods. It will be published on our website by this afternoon, and on the PTO website. I am also attaching it to your emails, if you have supplied us with one. I can not stress how crucial it is for us to have your correct home number, mailing address, and email. Out of 1,119 recipients of this call, only 707 have valid email addresses with us.
I have had a good number of parents tell me how awesome our virtual open house events were. I think I only heard of one instance where it was not possible to zoom into a teacher's classroom, but that situation was quickly repaired. If you have feedback for us, positive or otherwise, I would appreciate hearing about it via email. It helps us grow.
I wanted to take a moment and thank our Theatre Arts Guild boosters for the teachers' face shields. Ms. McCarty worked to collect information from me and get everything in order to help TAG supply these. Thanks so much for caring about our people, TAG. We are feeling the love!
Parents and students, if you need a schedule change, please fill out the form. Just go to the website for the link. With the new requirements we literally got seven days ago concerning scheduling, it is taking us some time to adjust schedule requests. Students, just follow the schedule you were sent until we can make those adjustments. That is no different from any other year we have ever had.
Over the next while, you may see me make a mistake or two. Please give me the same grace I give you and yours. It is a very happy, but very stressful time, and pieces of information come flying at us with record speed. New requirements have deadlines attached, and sometimes, these overlap. It's easy to make a wrong move. I don't have all the answers. I just don't. but I can tell you that I will try. If you see me getting ready to make a mistake, please tell me, so I can fix it before it mushrooms. We are going to get through this, but we will only come out on the other side as whole human beings if we live in kindness.

Good Morning, Northwest! This is your principal, Melody Sears, with some important announcements. I would like to thank the participants at today's School Improvement Team meeting. As the meeting lasted about an hour and a half, due in part to some technical issues along the way, Ms. Rowe is in the process of editing the video so that it can be posted online for viewing, as a sort of "Town Hall Meeting" document.
One of the questions in the meeting was about masks, and if teachers were required to wear masks. I looked that up, in fact. Of course, they are. CMS expectations are that all employees wear masks in the building. Our Governor has reiterated that. CMS will be providing some masks to teachers.
Another question involved technology. I know that some of you are concerned about getting hot spots or chrome books, and some of those devices may have encountered problems over the summer. Ms. Slater has provided guidance as follows:
I’m going to create a form for you to send to staff for them to request any help they may need from me. (So, teachers, be on the lookout for that!) Teachers must fill out the form if they need anything at all from me and to use the form instead of email.
My suggestion for families who meet the following criteria is to have them fill out the Chromebook Reporting Form and then I will be in touch to schedule a time for them to come and replace their device, get a Hotspot, etc. But at least by filling out the form, we know what numbers we’re dealing with.
Families who
Don’t have a Chromebook
Have a broken device
Need a Hotspot
Other issues (the reporting form has troubleshooting embedded, but if they can’t solve the problem on their own, I can assist), can access the form at http://bit.ly/nwsachromebookreportingform.
When Ms. Slater gets the form, she will be contacting you to schedule a time for you to come in.
Thank you so much for your time. I am asking that our Friends of Northwest post this on their online page, and that Ms. Slater posts this on our website.
Hello, Northwest. I apologize but I am calling to provide an update to my last message as it contained some inaccurate information. There is no emergency Board of Education meeting scheduled. I am sorry for causing any undue angst and for communicating inaccurate information. We are still going to hold our School Improvement Team meeting that will be recorded. Please send in your questions on the bitly link I sent you, so answers can be recorded for the future town hall meeting. Thank you, and again, I apologize for the unintended misinformation.
Parents and Staff,
This is Melody Sears, with an important announcement.
Please pay attention to this message, as it pertains to the SLT meeting, tomorrow morning at 8. The following message is from Ms. Rowe.
The School Improvement Team meeting link will be available to those wishing to join the SIT since the first part of the meeting will be establishing who will be on this year’s team, and in light of the emergency Board meeting tomorrow night. In order for those wishing to hear about the SEL (Social Emotional Learning), the bell schedule, and remote learning, we will be taping the meeting and posting those responses on the school webpage. Like last week’s CMS Town Hall meeting, if you have a specific question concerning these topics you would like to have answered, please submit your question(s) through this Google Form so they can be addressed in this meeting.
https://bit.ly/NWSAJUL28
We apologize for the change in procedures but as this is our first meeting of the year, and because of the emergency board meeting, there is additional business that needs to take place first and it would be difficult to manage if there are a lot of requests to join the meeting.
As always, you can view a copy of this message through your email, on the Friends of Northwest site, or on our website.
Best Regards,
Hello, Northwest! This is your principal, Melody Sears, with some announcements and information.
Ms. Rowe wants to share that the next School Leadership Team Meeting will be on Tuesday, July 28th, at 8 AM. The link to the meeting is on our website. I would love it if you could join us, as we will be talking about SEL (Social-Emotional Learning), the bell schedule, and what remote learning will look like!
You have probably already heard that our class periods will be 75 minutes long, and that 40 minutes will be spent in direct instruction, and 35 minutes will be spent in student practice, daily. There will be a 45 minute block of time after first period, each day, for SEL. Many of our courses are already outlined for us in pre-designed courses that teachers have assembled over the summer, and some of those courses are "shells," meaning that teachers would flesh out the lesson plan templates, but understanding that there is a pacing guide.
You will also want to know that there should be zoom links for instruction, live and recorded, for the remote students and those on "off" cycles when we return on a plan B rotation. That way, everybody gets the same instruction, and will have opportunities for asking questions and getting direct feedback from teachers. The entire admin team and our counselors are finishing up student schedules, which should be ready to send to you, as soon as the transportation stickers arrive during the first week of August. That sticker will tell you what bus your student is on, and which rotation your student is in. CMS assures us that siblings will be on the same rotation.
It has been suggested that NWSA hold a town hall, of sorts. I think that is a great idea, and I am currently trying to get representatives from all our arts departments and middle and high school core areas so we can hold one, next week.
Remember that if you are not getting these messages, it is because your information is not updated in the system, so you need to contact our school registrar, Ms. Warren, to make that happen. Regardless, copies of my messages are on our website and on the Friends of Northwest site.
As ever, please stay tuned for more information.
Hello, again. I know this is a bit much, you must be thinking, but I believe I need to get information out to you as quickly as possible, since the deadline to register for the Remote Academy is the 26th of July, and that is this coming Sunday.
First, I want to tell you that my zone superintendent communicated to me that students who opt to be at Northwest will indeed be counted absent if they are not physically present for the on-boarding days; however, if they go online and do the work for the classes, the absences will be excused. Also, I needed to tell you that, while most of our classes are year long, a few remain semester classes, like our middle school science and social studies.
Secondly, and this is something very important, the Town Hall Meeting that was to take place in person, tomorrow, will instead be a question and answer session, where parents can send in their questions for the Board and CMS officials to answer. I am sending you a copy of what I received from my zone office. You will be hearing the CMS Connect Ed robo-call, tonight, telling you about it, but I wanted you to hear it from me, first. I am including the links, which you can get from your email, and you can get from our website and from the Friends of Northwest page. Thank you, Sweet Ladies, for keeping up with all my posts. I think communication is vital at this time so parents can make the best decisions.
Tomorrow, my plans are to let you know how the teaching and learning expectations have evolved. Thank you so much for your questions.
The town hall has been converted to a Q&A that we'll record ahead of time in order to avoid tech issues like we had at the board presentation, and so that we can dub a version in Spanish as well. The Q&A will post on the CMS Facebook page at 7 on Thursday - link is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/740839006652099
If any families want to submit questions for this, they can draft their own or up-vote questions they especially want answered here: https://app.sli.do/event/r9wprv8u/live/questions
Hello, Northwest. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with some updated information in the wake of last night's Board meeting. I am setting this in the form of a question and answer format that comes directly from real parent questions.
Question:
I am really confused about the Remote Academy. If we are ALL going to remote learning after that second week, then why do we need to enroll in the Remote Academy? Does this mean that I only get NWSA teachers, classes etc remotely if my student attends in-person those first two weeks? Do the kids who go in-person for those first two weeks have a different experience after orientation than kids who do the orientation remotely? I hope that makes sense.
Thanks for all you do,
I know, right? After last night's board meeting, this is what I can tell you. It's probably best if you just stay with NWSA and not do the Remote Academy UNLESS you do not want your student to have to come to the brick and mortar building for the onboarding days at the start of the school year, and/or you do not want your kids coming into the school if we go to the Plan B rotation schedule after August 31, where your student would go one week in the building and two weeks online, when the Board and the governor says it is OK. For the first ten days of school, we will have student orientation, or "on-boarding". That will be the same information all NWSA students get. Remember that if your students elect to show up at the school, one third would only come for the first three days, the next group would only come for the following four days, and the last group would come for three days after the second group. I had been told that students who did not go to the Remote Academy, but opted to do the rotation schedule when it comes out would not be counted absent for the on-boarding days if they chose to do it online. The Board said, last night, that students WOULD be counted as absent if they were not physically in the building on those designated three or four days.
People are thinking that Remote Academy is a separate school. It's not. Most likely, your student would still have the same NWSA teachers, except in some cases where classes are quite large. In that case, they could have another teacher in the district.
Up front, I need to say that a member of my household is immune system compromised, and I am a cancer survivor, so you need to know I have skin in this game. Keeping my people safe and well at the school is paramount to me and my team. We are working on student traffic patterns for transitions, sanitation stations, developing safety teams, organizing temperature check procedures, figuring staggered bus and carpool dismissals, and cleaning rotations, among other measures.
I hope that is making things a bit more clear for you. Believe me, wrapping my head around all this has taken some time and different ways of thinking about school! They say that every time you learn something new, you get another wrinkle in your brain. I bet mine looks like a prune, right now.
Seniors, Stay tuned for an announcement after this message, concerning Senior Pictures on July 30th.
Thank you, and keep the questions coming!
Here is a statement taken directly from the FAQ sheet on Remote Academy concerning Magnets:
Until we gather full information about the students who opt into this model, we cannot commit to delivering a full remote version of each magnet. It is possible if sufficient students enroll from a certain type of magnet that we may be able to deliver remote classes with a Montessori lens, or additional Arts, STEAM, or Language aspects. However, this will be dependent upon student and staff numbers, and you will need to return to the in-person model to fully participate in the magnet.
By registering for the Remote Academy, please understand that you forgo some theme specific experiences for the duration of your participation in the Academy. However, your child’s placement at that Magnet school is protected, and they will default back into their Magnet assignment at the end of the year if you do not exit sooner.
When the magnet process opens for the 2021-22 school year you will have full access to all CMS magnet options as you would from any other school.
We understand that there are certain programs - primarily language programs - that require students to maintain a level of practice and exposure. We will work with the Office of Magnet Programs and School Choice as well as your child’s school to ensure that these needs are provided.
Please stay tuned for more information. As always, I am asking that this message is posted on our website and on the Friends of Northwest page, online.
Thanks, and have a super Summer!
Hello, Northwest Families! This is your Principal, Melody Sears.
As promised, I am sending along more information about the coming school year. I thought I would begin by answering some frequently asked questions.
Question: If we sign up for Remote Academy will our teachers be from NWSA or from a pool of teachers in the area?
Answer: If you sign up for the Remote Academy, your child’s teachers would be pulled from all over the district, and that could include some of ours. Academy organizers would try to keep our students with our teachers, but it is possible that your child would be taught by someone else in the district.
Question: If we choose Remote Academy and then mid year choose to come back to in person at NWSA will my student be able to step back into her major’s course even if it is mid year?
Answer: Your student could take core classes at the Remote Academy, but take electives from us. I just found out that Remote Academy should be offering year long core classes. Our core classes are year-long, too. So, if your student takes year long core classes at Virtual Academy, and electives with us, they could step right back into their arts major classes and/or core classes if your student elects to come back at the semester. It is my understanding that your student could take Remote Academy Core classes and our electives all year, and still not lose their spot. Please remember, though, that students still have to audition for high school when going from grade 8 to grade 9, and admittance to grade 9 will be based on that, as usual.
Question: Will the teachers at NWSA be using identical online tools/materials for the core subjects same as they will use in the Remote Academy?
Answer: Yes, we will be using the same tools for those courses the teachers developed over the summer for Remote Academy. Keep in mind that not all core classes are complete courses, but some require teachers to fill in the lesson plan template for their own lessons -- they call these "shells". It would be the same for the Remote Academy as at NWSA. All the courses would follow the North Carolina Standards for the courses, and follow a pacing guide for every course.
Question: My student is currently enrolled in Honors Classes and premath 1. Will NWSA still be able to offer those classes if there are fewer students?
Answer: Even if there are fewer students, your student would still get the Honors work and credit, and be enrolled in the courses we are currently offering in the schedule, even if it meant we have to combine standard and honors classes, and get creative with others.
Please stay tuned for more information. As always, I am asking that this message is posted on our website and on the Friends of Northwest page, online. I will send you another message that quotes the Remote Academy FAQ sheet, citing relationships between Magnets and Remote Academy, immediately following this one.
Thanks, and have a super Summer!
Hello. It's me, for the last time, tonight, I promise. The first part of the message I sent you didn't get onto the recording, so I am sending you the first part of that message, so you'll have that. If you miss these messages for any reason, I will try to have them posted on our school's website and on the Friends of Northwest page, online. Thank you for your patience. Here is the part that didn't get recorded:
Good Evening, Again, Northwest Families. This is your principal, Melody Sears, with a few more points of information I would like to share with you. I know you have many questions, and I should be answering those as the days pass, but I wanted to pause to answer a few that may be weighing heavily on your minds.
In the coming days, CMS will be sending out a survey to you to ask about options for schooling that you may prefer. You already know about the first two weeks of school, from the 17th to the 28th of August, and how we plan to rotate students to keep the numbers of students down in order to adequately social distance. After that, we will go totally remote and use technology for our online instruction until the Board indicates otherwise. The question some of you may have is whether you should send your student to school or go to an online school, instead. Well, you have choices, but what you will be told in the coming days is that your student does not have to attend the in person onboarding, but can participate in the orientation days via technology, and your student will not lose their spot at our school if this is what your family elects to do. Remote onboarding/orientation does present problems for us in that we have to get materials and in some cases technology to students, but that is a problem we can tackle together. In the orientation sessions, we will be talking about safety procedures at the school, allowing students to meet their teachers, outlining how to access the courses online, giving needed technical training so this is possible for students, giving direct instruction from the curriculum, and checking in on our students' well-being. Yes, these topics are included in the orientation days, but there will be even more.

You may also be asking yourselves if the coursework will be different from last spring, or if accountability measures will be in place for our students that were more clear-cut than last spring. The answer is that teachers in CMS have been hard at work to design full courses for our core classes, and composing "shell" class templates that will be used for other classes, like electives, that may need more leeway in some areas. Please remember that when we left, last spring, we had one day to get online instruction together in a land where face-to-face instruction was most of what we knew.
You may be asking if you elect to have the remote only, (or Remote Academy) option, if that is the way it has to stay for next year. The answer is that no, you would be able to change at the semester.
I will continue to update you, as I can, with these messages. I will be asking our administrative staff to come up with a survey to send you to ask you about your concerns and get your input.
It is vital that your information is updated with our school's Registrar, Ms. Warren, so you will know what is going on.
Thank you!
Good evening, Northwest Families,
The following is a message from our district that you probably already got, today, around 1 PM. I am supposed to send it to you, also. I should be sending you another one, just a bit later on, to add a few details. Here goes:
We are calling to give you an update about the opening of schools. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education last night approved its plan for reopening schools on Aug. 17. The plan, known as Plan B-Plus Remote, begins the school year with students in-classrooms on a rotational basis during a two-week onboarding period. Beginning in week three, all instruction will be remote.
The plan is designed to address worsening COVID-19 conditions and was an option given to districts by N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper in a statewide announcement on Tuesday.
The onboarding period will consist of students being assigned to one of three groups; one-third of students will be assigned to group A, the next one-third will be assigned to group B, and the next one-third to group C. Students will attend in-person onboarding instruction on their group’s assigned days within the first two weeks of the school year.
After the onboarding days, Plan B-Plus Remote will offer a remote learning environment for all students, which also provides the flexibility for more teachers and staff to work remotely. Starting in week three – when remote learning begins – students will not receive in-person instruction. CMS buildings will be open for staff for essential functions, but not open for students.
A full remote-learning option may be selected by parents who have concerns about sending their students to school during continued pandemic conditions. More information about this option, including how and when to enroll, will be shared soon.
CMS will communicate additional details about the plan in the coming days and weeks. Parents are encouraged to update their contact information with their schools to ensure they receive this timely information. Parents should also expect to receive information from their child’s school with specific information related to the first two weeks of school.
The CMS Call Center will be prepared to field questions and concerns. The phone number is (980) 343-3001.
