MYP B Art

Overview:

Beginning level Visual Arts is a foundation course in which students learn and experiment in a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, digital media, collage, sculpture, and installation. Students are exposed to a variety of historical and contemporary artists and genres. Students meet the North Carolina essential standards as well as the objectives of the MYP-IB program through the use of their Sketchbook, Artworks, and Class Critiques.

Sketchbook:

Students will use sketchbooks to complete daily warm-ups, research, and self-critiques. They will be provided a composition notebook, or can provide their own sketchbook. Here is a great example of one that can be used for several years of art.

Artwork:

The assignments in the Beginning Art course are designed to give the students structure and a good foundation to help build skill, but at the same time allow for personal choices and expression. Students will have access to all of the appropriate materials necessary to complete the requirements for each project, but are welcome to supplement with outside supplies.

Critiques:

Students will participate in class critiques at the conclusion of each project. The Critiques will include whole class discussions, small student led discussions, and written critiques. Students will learn to read artwork as a complex text using ‘The Critical Method’. Students will critique work of other artist, students, and personal artworks.

Project themes for the Beginning level course are as follows:

Quarter 1: Observation & Process

Quarter 2: Reconstruction & Unusual Materials

IB Learner Profile: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective

**All students will be required to keep a portfolio of their artwork in order to meet CMS proficiency levels.
