Multiple criteria are used in order to identify CMS students as gifted. Identification is guided by the CMS Gifted Identification Rubric.
CMS conducts a universal screening for all second grade students. Each second grade student is provided with the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), iReady, and the Gifted Rating Scales (GRS). A portfolio opportunity is available if students meet certain criteria.
CogAT is an aptitude assessment that measures reasoning and problem-solving skills and provides information on how a child thinks. The CogAT includes verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative reasoning batteries and will be administered in multiple sessions over three days.
The GRS provides a standardized method for identifying children for potential gifted identification based on teacher observations. The six domains include: intellectual, academic, motivation, creativity, leadership and artistic talent.
AIG Site-Based Committees conduct an annual review of student data in grades 3 through 5. From this review, the committee determines which students will be screened for gifted identification. Students may be considered for rescreening by the district after a period of at least 24 months has passed since their last screening.
