Student Technology Tips & Procedures for MHES STaff
Requesting devices for new students:
When you have new students and need devices for them, please send Haley an email with the student’s name and student ID number. She will check out a device to the new student at her earliest opportunity and get it to you.
Sometimes students take a few days to show up in the inventory system. We might not be able to assign them one for the first day or two they’re here.
What to do with a student’s device when they withdraw from our school:
As soon as a student withdraws, send the device to the library with a note saying they’ve withdrawn.
Our student devices are assigned to students in CMS’s technology inventory system, FAM. If the student leaves our school, I need to check that device back in so it’s not assigned to the student in CMS’s system anymore. Not doing this can result in confusion for the new school and potentially a delay in the student being able to get a device at their new school.
Please do not keep extra Chromebooks or iPads in your classroom as backup devices. All extra devices should be housed in the library for inventory & device distribution purposes.
Basic Troubleshooting to try before sending devices to the library:
Power Cycle - completely shut down the device and turn it back on.
iPad: hold the top button down until the “Slide to Power Off” bar appears. Slide your finger along that bar to turn it off completely. Let it stay off for a minute, then turn it back on by holding that power button down.
Chromebook: hold the power button down until the screen shuts off. Let it sit for a minute before pressing the power button again to turn it back on.
Hard Reset - When a basic power cycle (turning it off and back on) doesn’t work to resolve the issue, or if the device is frozen and won’t turn off normally, try a hard reset.
iPad: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
Chromebook: Turn off the Chromebook. Then, press and hold Refresh + tap Power . When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh .
If a Chromebook will not turn on, it’s probably hibernating. They’re moody. Try these steps:
Hold the Escape + Refresh + tap Power buttons down at the same time and continue to hold them for 30 seconds or until the screen starts to come on.
When the screen comes on, it should have a screen that says something about the Chrome OS being missing or damaged. Don’t panic. 😊
Turn the Chromebook off by holding down the power button, then let it sit for a minute before turning it back on. It should come up to the normal screen. If it doesn’t, send it to me.
Getting assistance with devices that are not working, after you’ve tried basic troubleshooting:
Please send the device to the library:
The device should have a note attached explaining what’s wrong with the device.
Please remember that we are teaching classes throughout the day and attending to other responsibilities when it’s not class time. We can’t provide on-demand tech support, but we’ll be as quick as possible.
We will return the device to you ASAP. If it needs to be sent out for repair or if there’s a cost associated with the damage, we’ll communicate that to you through email.
