Hawthorne Academy of Public Safety has a cooperative partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department forming the A.S.A.P program. In this partnership, we have the opportunity to place a trained CMPD A.S.A.P. Instructor directly in the classroom to work alongside CMS Public Safety Instructors to provide a more layered learning environment for the students. This program strives to keep our trained youth here in the queen city and focuses on streamlining students into a direct career path with the City of Charlotte. This is done through a variety of efforts including:
Exploring is a work=based learning program in which young adults learn about particular careers in which they have an interest. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department sponsors two Exploring Posts that provide teens with the opportunities to learn about the law enforcement profession, and make informed decisions about possible future careers.
The Police Exploring program introduces students to the world of law enforcement at the local, state, and national levels. Explorers are trained in several aspects of police work and have the opportunities to compete with other posts in state, region, and national conferences. We also offer students the opportunity to participate in the Ride-Along Program, which allows the Explorers to ride in the patrol car with an experienced officer on the job. Two academies are offered every year by CMPD, and by the North Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers (NCALEEA) as opportunities for Explorers to experience abbreviated versions of an actual police academy.
MYEP seeks to build partnerships with host employers in the private, public, and non-profit sectors of Charlotte’s economy who are able to provide one-of-a-kind career experiences for MYEP participants. Businesses provide career experiences that help youth develop career goals, stay in school, achieve academically, and enhance social skills that enable them to succeed in life. Students connect to the world of work which enables businesses and communities to know the needs and successes of the students and schools.
