Residency Requirements

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Teaching Residency is a comprehensive alternative licensure program designed to prepare aspiring educators through a blend of coursework and hands-on teaching experience. The program spans a minimum of 13 months, beginning with a 5-week unpaid pre-service training, followed by a year-long clinical residency. 

Our comprehensive program guides candidates from preparation to licensure with structured training, hands-on experience, and ongoing support. Here's what the program includes:

Spring: Praxis Exam Preparation (Coming Soon)

Candidates start the process by preparing for and taking the required Praxis exams, which assess their academic skills and subject-specific knowledge needed for teaching. These exams are an essential step in meeting certification requirements.

Spring & Summer: Intensive Training

Teacher training lays the groundwork for success with:

• Hands-on practice in pedagogy and classroom management techniques.

• Real-time feedback to improve teaching strategies.

• A focus on building equitable and positive classroom environments.

• A performance-based evaluation to ensure candidates meet high standards before moving forward.

This intensive teacher training program helps educators develop the skills they need to create engaging and effective learning experiences.
