The String Family! Our last family of instruments to discuss. In the symphony/orchestra there are only 4 - the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Many people mistakenly pronounce "bass" like a fish, but it's pronounced like "base". The harp is also a string instrument and is used in an orchestra. The guitar and ukulele are also string instruments but they are not part of the orchestra. Many people disagree about which family a piano belongs too. Some people think it is a string instrument and some people think that it is a percussion instrument. Here are some videos for you to enjoy, then maybe you can try and make your own guitar, with help from a parent.
This week we will keep on with the instrument families with the Woodwind Family. The woodwind family describes instruments that were originally made of wood and are played by blowing into a mouthpiece. The action of blowing relates to The Brass Family, which we talked about last week. There are two main types of woodwind instruments: flutes and reeds. Instruments like the flute and the recorder can be played by either blowing directly into the mouthpiece or blowing over the hole (like you would blow over the hole on a glass bottle). Instruments like the clarinet and the oboe require the use of a piece of wood, called a reed, to make its sound. Let's jump into this exciting family of instruments!
Here are a couple of musical things for you to try this week. If we were in school, we would be learning about the instrument families (5th grade already did this). There are 4 families in the orchestra - Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, and Percussion. For the next few weeks, we will talk about each family. This week we will start with the Percussion Family. A percussion instrument is anything that you hit, shake, or scrape. Can you name something? A drum, a xylophone, a maracca, a triangle. Grab a bucket, box, pot or anything that you can hit and some spoons or sticks and play along with "Can't Stop The Feeling".
