Frequently Asked questions

how do i know which classes to take?

You should choose the next sequential graduation required course in each core subject (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies), plus elective courses that are of interest to you.

English: English I > English II > English III > English IV

Math: Math 1 > Math 2 > Math 3 > Higher Math.

Full progression and more information are in the AK Math Sequencing Chart.

Science progression: Earth/Env Science > Biology > Chemistry OR Biology > Chemistry > AP Environmental Science.

Full progression and more information are in the AK Science Sequencing Chart as well as the AK Science Success Guidelines.

Social Studies: Please look at the AK Social Studies Sequencing Chart closely.

Questions regarding level placement (Honors, AP, etc) should be directed to your current teachers - they know the most about you as a student! They are the most accurate source of information about what class(es) will be appropriate for you.

You can read course descriptions for any class taught at AK in the AK Course Description Guide. This also includes prerequisites and descriptions of expectations for each class.

When deciding what electives to take, it is recommended that students choose a variety of classes that they are interested and may want to explore. Students should communicate with colleges/universities that they are interested in to ensure they meet any admission requirements.

i am a rising junior zoned for ballantyne ridge

All 275 rising juniors who are ZONED for Ballantyne Ridge will fill out BR AND AK registration information.

We are aware that many of those students have put in the request to stay at Ardrey Kell, and it has been noted. However, BR and AK are asking these students to complete both registration processes just in case something happens later (transportation, etc) and they change to go to BR.

This means that these 275 students will get a GRAY AK registration card and a PURPLE BR registration card. They have to fill out both, and on February 6th, they will follow both school’s input process. Feel free to staple the cards together.

what is the difference between standard, honors, and ap?

In Standard level courses, course content, pace, and academic rigor follow standards specified by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. These are college prep classes. Quality points for the GPA calculation are assigned according to the standard 4.0 scale and receive no additional quality points.

In Honors level courses, course content, pace, and academic rigor place high expectations on the student, demanding greater independence and responsibility. These courses are more challenging than standard level courses and are distinguished by a difference in the depth and scope of work required to address the course content. Honors courses receive one-half (.5) extra quality points in weighted GPA calculation.

Advanced Placement (AP) course content, pace, and academic rigor are considered college level, as determined by the College Board. These courses are designed to enable students to earn high scores on the AP exam, potentially leading to college credit. AP Courses receive one (1) extra quality points in weighted GPA calculation.

can i take online courses?

In certain circumstances, students can take online classes through NCVPS. Visit the NCVPS/CPCC page for more information.

where can i learn about ap courses?

Visit the AP Information Page for full descriptions of all AP courses taught at Ardrey Kell.

what is a/b day class?

We run a blended high school schedule with two types of classes: A/B day and semester (sometimes called 4x4).

A/B day classes are taught every other day for the whole school year from August to June. They are indicated on your registration card in bold font. All world languages, all AP courses, and many fine arts and elective courses are taught A/B day.

Semester classes are taught every day for one semester (either August to January or January to June). Most of our core classes are taught in the semester format. Semester classes are in the non-bold font on your card.

When choosing classes, it's important to choose A/B day classes in PAIRS so that they can alternate days in your schedule. You can see some sample schedules here to get an idea of what school year would look like with both A/B day and semester classes.

can i double up in classes to get ahead?

With the exception of the two situations listed below, students may not double up in core courses in a school year. It is important that all students at AK have the opportunity to take the core classes that they need to meet graduation requirements. Given the size of our student body and class size caps, we can only schedule students in one core course in each subject each school year. Students who are behind cohort or have transferred in from other districts may be administratively placed in two core courses in order to meet graduation requirements on time.

Students who take NC Math 1 in 9th grade, receive a final grade of A in the course may enroll in Honors NC Math 2 and Honors NC Math 3 during their sophomore year. There are no other situations in which doubling in math is permitted during sophomore or junior year.

Juniors have the option to double in science classes, if they have met other graduation requirements, as long as one is their graduation required science (either Chemistry or AP Environmental Science) and the other is an elective science credit.

will i be able to change my course requests?

There will be a Change Week later in the spring semester, during which time students will be given the opportunity to change any of their course requests. This will be publicized through the announcements and the main AK website. This is the last chance for student to change their course requests.

Can parents have a registration meeting with counselors?

Because counselors meet with every student individually to review and finalize their course requests, they are unable to accommodate requests for parent meetings. Parents are encouraged to reach out to counselors via email with any questions they have about courses or the registration process.

Counselors will communicate with parents if they feel a student's course selections are incorrect or inappropriate.

Counselor contact information can be found on the AK Student Services website.

i have a unique circumstance or request

Parents and students may attach any pertinent notes or information they have to the students registration card. Counselors and schedulers will review this information.
