CMS prioritizes learning that is interactive, social and takes place on campus. At the same time, we recognize the role distance learning can play in extending opportunities for students (allowing them to take courses not offered at the school, to help fill gaps in their understanding through credit recovery, and to attend school "remotely" for those who must miss school due to a long-term absence).
Distance learning is also an important alternative to our preferred method of on campus learning in the event of an extended school closure. Many of our teachers already utilize a blended learning environment (in person and online) with students, which would facilitate a move to distance learning if it were required.
Important Characteristics of Distance Learning
Distance learning generally involves an online component, and can include a combination of
Synchronous Learning where every student is online with the teacher at the same time (for example, using Google Meet in Grades 5-12).
Asynchronous Learning where students log on as needed to independently access teacher-provided resources and assignments, participate in class activities such as discussions or assessments, and submit work.
The Head of School in consultation with the Crisis Response Team as well as the CMS Board of Directors will make the final decision to move from On Campus Learning to Distance Learning Plan (DLP).
The CMS Crisis Response Team (CRT) includes the CMS Head of School, the Deputy Head of School for Learning, Division Principals, Business Manager, Operations Manager, School Doctor, Director of Communications, Director of Technology, Activities & Athletics Director, and Security Manager.
The Head of School also regularly communicates with the CMS Board of Directors and the CMS Community about school closures.
The CMS Distance Learning Plan may be updated as we adapt to the needs of the community. Information about updates can be found here.
