Legal Services Clinic was inaugurated in CMR University School of Legal Studies, Bengaluru on 23rd October, 2021. The ceremony was graced by the auspicious presence of the dignitaries and esteemed Chief Guest Hon’ble Shri. Justice P. Krishna Bhat.
LEGAL SERVICES CLINIC CONDUCTED AT GOVERNMENT SCHOOL AT KITHAGANUR ON 21.10.2021
Legal Services Clinic on 21st October 2021 organized a Legal Awareness Program on Domestic Violence against the Women by the students of CMR University School of Legal Studies. This clinic was held at Government School at Kithaganur. The participants of our legal aid clinic included the students of our law college from all the years. The respected Panchayat officers of the Kithaganur Village were also invited to this Legal Awareness Program. The students invited and gathered the public by means of distribution of pamphlets around the Kithaganur Village.
The Supreme Court Constituted Committee Comprising of Hon'ble Justice A.V. Chandrasekhar, Former Judge of the Karnataka High Court Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Jayakar Jerome, Former Commissioner of the BDA and Mr. S.T. Ramesh, Former Director General of Police.
Based on the Order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the Committee is required to look into each of the requests of the owners of the dwelling houses/buildings for its regularisation in Dr. Shivarama Karanth Layout. The Committee should also find out whether the said dwelling houses/buildings have been constructed in accordance with the sanction/permission of the competent authorities. The constructions which have come up after the date of pronouncement of the judgment by this Court i.e. 3.8.2018, shall not be eligible for regularisation. The Committee is permitted to devise its own mechanism/procedure for holding the enquiry including issuing notices in the local newspapers in this regard.
CMR University School of Legal Studies was identified by the Justice A.V Chandrashekar Committee in assisting them in collecting and uploading of documents. We consented for the same and 41 students were identified to undertake this work as part of imparting legal assistance.
The committee along with Bangalore Development Authority officials and Navigem Data Pvt. Ltd imparted technical skills to us students in ensuring that they are equipped to work in the filed. Our students guided the community members along with BDA officials in Dr. Shivaram Karanth Layout and assisted them in filing the documents such as Sale Deed, tax paid receipt, ID proof, sanctioned plan etc.
This legal service work started in February 2021 by giving technical training to our students and from March 2021 our students starting visiting the field identified. 4 locations were identified by the committee members in collecting the documents and to facilitate the community members to access the assistance of the officials and students in submitting the documents namely Byalakere, Somashetty Halli, Singanayakanahalli and Medi Agrahara.
Our students were made in teams and used to visit 4 sites everyday for 7 months even in the amidst the COVID-19.
The students work was: “We have scanned the above documents and uploaded along with their application Number. Before scanning and uploading the relevant documents we have thoroughly examined the documents and uploaded only the valid documents.” “Approximately we received about 100 – 150 applications per day”.
We have completed the assignment successfully and much appreciated by the A.V. Chandrasekhar Committee members.
In 2020
Our students have also interned with Karnataka District Legal Services Authority from December 2019 to January 2020 totally 22 days and they visit 22 places. City civil court, Central Administrative Tribunal, Magistrate Court, Debt Recovery Tribunal, Karnataka State Administrative Tribunal, DLSA office, labour court, district consumer forums. They also visited Bangalore Central Jail, mediation centre etc.
This was a great learning opportunity for our students in understanding the procedures and way of the functions of our courts. Our students also shared their learning and experiences with the society by conducted legal aid awareness, Legal literacy programmes and club were conducted at old age home, at home for differently abled children and home for homeless people.
On 4th December 2020, Legal Services Cell and the Social Impact Club along with Loquitur-CMR Debate and MUN Society organized a 'Public Elocution.' This competition was hosted in order to celebrate Advocates' Day, which is celebrated on 3rd December of every year in order to commemorate the birth date of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, a renowned freedom fighter, and most of all, an eminent lawyer. The topics for the preliminary round were:

The topic for the finals was: 'Lawyers should be permitted to take contingency fee.'
In 2019
On National Law Day- 26th November,2020, The Legal Aid Cell and the Social Impact Club, School of Legal Studies, has taken the immense pleasure to celebrate “National Law Day- Samvidhan Diwas” on 26th November, 2020.On this occasion of Samvidhan Diwas, We have taken an effort to release a video of our beloved Dean Dr. TR. Subramanya, he addresses on making of the Constitution of India and the Contribution of the great personalities involved in the exercise. Moreover, in order to add on the information among the students, they have been given with the information about the day and students were asked to create awareness among the laymen about the speciality of the day through social media. Students have kept what’s app- status of the Preamble of our constitution. As a societal campaign students have kept the thoughts of the day, where they were deliberately made to understand the importance of the Constitution Day of our Country.
Mock Parliamentary session: “Have the passion, take the action and magic will happen.”-According to John F. Kennedy: Without debate, without criticism no administration and no country can succeed and no republic can survive. Debating has been a part of the law making body of the government, i.e., the legislature. On the 22nd November 2019 the students from II year B.A. LL.B. presented a Mock Parliamentary Debate session for the students and the faculty at the Smt. Kamalabai Educational Institute. The audience witnessed a debate on the motion “This house wishes to ban mobile phones for students in all educational institutions.” in the LokSabha. The entire set-up saw the house divided into 2 sides: the government side and the opposition side. The session started with the students being introduced to the organs of government, and the bi-cameral system being followed in India and other substantial information regarding scope of debating. The topic drew the attention of the students real quick as both the sides were showered with questions when the question hour was open to the audience. The entire session involved an active interaction between the audience and the students. For the students of 8th and 9th grade two sessions were held. The session was an initiative to encourage the students to debate and explore the area of Parliament debating. Their questions related to the debating were clarified. The student of the law school catered to a cheerful and enthusiastic audience which made the sessions a great success. The students showed great interest and their keen observation led to the question-answer sessions into a fun-filled event.
In 2018
Legal Service Camp in Hebbagudi, Bangalore, from 7th to 8th April 2018, where students have been involved to distributing the pamphlets, notices in the vicinity to have basic legal information and there was an organised events with the Karnataka legal services authority members and advocates to provide free legal aid service to the people.
CYCLE OF LIFE- CYCLOTHON A cycle rally hosted by Greenpeace India- an environmental organisation, in collaboration with various colleges across Bangalore on the 16th of September also duelled as the launch pad for the Legal Aid Cell and Social Impact club of CMR University School of Legal Studies. The motto of the cycle rally was “Waste to Food” and the objective was to create visibility and spread awareness on the issue of Garbage pill in Bangalore and to promote habits of segregation and composting amongst the responsible members of the society. The members of the Legal aid cell and Social Impact club were true agents of change as they helped spread the message about segregating, composting and safe food through their cycle rally which started from Decathlon, Whitefield for a distance of about 6kms in and around Whitefield, Bangalore. Post the cycle rally; the students were escorted to Phoenix Marketcity mall, Whitefield where the volunteers of Greenpeace India displayed a vertical garden consisting of 3000 saplings grown from composted material. Mrs. Shivani Shah, a Food for Life campaigner from Greenpeace discussed the immediate need for waste management in Bangalore and how composting will help in generating cleaner and safer food. Mrs. Padma Patil, a composting champion, was also among the esteemed speakers. She has inspired 1200 homes in her apartment to practice waste segregation and composting.
Students of CMR University School of Legal Studies – Legal Service Clinic and Social Impact Club members participated in the protest organised by NLS Legal Aid Society. The Next Legal Services Legal Aid Society headed by Mrs. Beena Pallai, organised the protest against Sexual Harassment against women at freedom park from 11:30am to 12:30pm. The Protest was headed by Mrs. Beena Pallai, Mr. Justice. Pasha, Mrs. Irom Sharmila, Advocates of Next Legal Services, students of various Law colleges in Bangalore also participated in the protest. 20 members of Legal service clinic and Social Impact Club participated in the event and made it successful.
LEGAL AWARENESS DAY Date: 09 / 11 / 2018 REPORT The Theatre Club, popularly known as ‘TRAMEDY’ has organized a skit play through the Legal aid cell and Social Impact Club of the CMR, School of Legal Studies (SOLS) on the nowadays burning issues of the society that require more in-depth legal consideration. On some of these issues, laws have already been formulated and on some they are yet to. The casts of the play comprises of the SOLS students of different years. The play intended to inform the spectators that formulation is not an end in itself because despite the formulation, our society functions in a way that unveils misuse and violation. For this purpose, three topics have been covered – LGBT Rights, Men’s Right Violation and Honour Killing. The Subject Matter: The play intends to uplift that the harassment and tortures related to the above topics. Despite the facts that the Supreme Court of India (SCOI) has decriminalized homosexuality (September 6, 2018) and ordered not to discriminate people on the basis of their sexual orientation (July, 2017), people of the LGBT community still faces a lot of harassment and tortures.
Child rights day, celebrated on November 20th,2018, is to make people aware about the rights of children which are necessary for their overall development. Every child has some of the abilities and capabilities to tackle many things. Each child has to focus any one aspect of a problem that they are dealing with and this would enable them o achieve their goals in a much efficient manner. On Child rights day, our college had taken the initiative of putting up numerous expressions of child rights in the form of slogans, art and photography. These were displayed in the college notice board for students’ awareness. The works displayed enumerated the essence of what child rights constitute. The views of a child mean that the voice of all the children must be heard and respected in all matters. This would solely lead to the preservation of their rights.
Legal Literacy and Awareness Program at Sumangali Seva Ashrama, Bangalore
Students of the Legal Services Clinic conducted a few activities with the students studying at Sumangali Seva Ashrama on 9 September 2023, Saturday to educate them about laws and government policies relevant to them and scholarship programmes. It is a voluntary organization for women and children in R T Nagar, Bangalore and they focus on providing education and employability training. They also undertake various initiatives for the upliftment of the disadvantaged classes in society. We also conducted a Donation Drive in CMR SOLS towards this visit where we collected school supplies, hygiene products, cooking provisions and clothes. Every donor was sent a Letter of Gratitude as an official acknowledgement from the Legal Services Clinic of their contribution.
The Faculty Coordinators and Student Coordinators conducted this session on 28 October 2023 in the AV Hall, OBMR Campus for all first-year students in order to convey to them the nature of work and manner of functioning of the Legal Services Clinic. A few students who have been active members of the Clinic shared their experience with the freshers about different events that they were part of- working with the Justice Chandrashekhar Committee, Inauguration of Village Level Legal Services Clinic, Constitution Week, visit to Army Public School, visit to Sumangali Seva Ashrama. Through this, we encouraged students to participate in our future activities to gain holistic development as law students. The Faculty Coordinators also shared their insight as to why being part of the Legal Services Clinic is important and beneficial.
