Policies and regulations can have profound impacts on wildlife conservation. Thus, as a professional society, CMPS coordinates with other TWS units as appropriate, elevating nonpartisan member expertise and science to guide management decisions. This engagement occurs independently of membership employers.
CMPS has a Resolutions and Statements Committee that works with the CMPS Board, State Chapters' Conservation Affairs Committees (CACs), and the TWS Conservation Affairs Network (CAN) to:
provide support or lead in technical review of proposed actions affecting natural resources in the CMPS region
develop position statements on broad conservation issues
coordinate information sharing and engagement opportunities on state/regional issues
serve as an unbiased, science-based expert for decision-makers
share resources created by CAN and CACs, ensuring CMPS members are aware of the impact of policy on their work and are knowledgeable of current issues in wildlife policy
CMPS also has a representative on the TWS Conservation Affairs Network (CAN). CAN enhances the effectiveness of our entire Society by increasing communication, collaboration, and coordination between our Chapters, Sections, and TWS headquarters.
TWS Staff that oversee the CAN have created a Policy Toolkit that provides TWS members with guidance and basic knowledge of the policy process and engagement techniques to ensure members are able to effectively engage and make the voice of wildlife professionals heard. TWS also maintains a Policy Library and Policy Resources.
TWS also compiles information related various policy issues that are occurring at local, regional, and national levels in a monthly newsletter. View previous newsletters and sign up for future newsletters here.
If you have an issue affecting conservation in the CMPS region, contact us and we will try to address it.
If you would like to know some of the things our CMPS Conservation Affairs Network has sent to and received from various politicians, please reach out to Mark Lindvall.
The TWS Government Affairs staff have developed the final Conservation Affairs Network plan. TWS Council endorsed the idea at the October 2013 meeting in Milwaukee. Is this something that your Chapter or Section should pursue? Please contact Andrea Orabona.
