As of today, Takaya has made it possible for at least 83 essential workers to feel some sense of relief about going to work.

Making the masks was definitely a venture I didn't know I would take! I knew I wanted to help the community in some way, especially with the growing cases in Prince George's county. The idea of making masks came to me and my mom while watching TV together. We had been scrolling through channels, and one news station had covered a mother making masks for her neighbors. I had told my mom that's what I wanted to do, so after that we started looking at youtube videos, and the rest is history! It's been a very fun bonding experience with my mom, and I've picked up the hobby of sewing in the process! It honestly baffles me that so many store workers don't have masks, and many homeless people have no mask or shelter either. At the moment, we're making masks for my friends, because a lot of them go out running or walking and don't have masks. I definitely encourage other students to do what they can at this time, even if it's just being there for friends/family when they need someone to talk to!

Between her online ITECH and CMIT classes, TaKaya McFarland has making masks for essential workers (at no cost) and delivering them (of course using social distancing). Even though she has met all SSL requirements, noticed that there was a need for more "washable" masks with the option to insert filters.

In the picture she delivered masks to a UPS store. She was surprised that the workers weren't provided with masks by the company. They were so thankful and appreciative!
