This task is from the field of environmental design.
This is the second task in the six part Area of Study 1 in Year 12 Visual Communication Design.
You will be designing an animal enclosure for the Melbourne Zoo.
Background information
Zoos Victoria is a world-leading zoo-based conservation organisation, dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction.
Our four zoos are Healesville Sanctuary, Kyabram Fauna Park, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Each one provides a unique and immersive experience that attracts visitors from around the world.
Our zoos inspire animal lovers of all ages. And by strengthening the connection between people and wildlife, we hope to protect the future of animals and their homes.
Our important work includes breeding and recovery programs; we've built partnerships with local communities, fellow conservationists, and like-minded organisations — close to home and in far-flung corners of the world.
Communication Need
The client, Melbourne Zoo, requires an animal enclosure concept design of an animal of your choice. The Enclosure must include the following:
Viewing area for the target audience
Entrance reflecting the theme of the animal
Suitable habitat for your chosen animal, including sleeping and drinking area, shelter etc.
Wheelchair access
Materials and colours to harmonise with the species of the animal
Context
Melbourne Zoo
Elliott Ave, Parkville VIC 3052
Melbourne Zoo is a zoo in Melbourne, Australia. It is located within Royal Park in Parkville, approximately 4 kilometres north of the centre of Melbourne. It is the primary zoo serving Melbourne.
Complete ONE page of research. Collect images of existing animal enclosures & designs you think will make a connection with your selected animal and target audience.
Explain reasons you have selected these examples. What is the link? (audience?, purpose? Context, elements, principles, materials, media?)
Using visualisation drawing, complete both 2D and 3D images with annotations to explain features and materials of your animal enclosure. Keep in mind the target audience and how they wil interact with the animals. Ensure that you also complete some floorplan sketches for your layouts. TWO Pages.
PART A
Complete a dimensioned floor plan, with a front elevation using appropriate drawing conventions. This task must be completed using Adobe® Illustrator® .
The following Technical Drawing Specification must be followed:
Appropriate scales (1:100)
Placement and use of ‘north point’ symbol
Views
Line conventions
Symbols in plans and elevations
Dimensioning
Title Block
Instructional Video
Please watch this step by step clip on how to construct/draw your floor plans in Adobe Illustrator.
PART B
Produce a two-point perspective drawing of your animal enclosure. This may be focusing on one section of the enclosure such as the animals sleeping area or the target audiences viewing point (however, feel free to attempt the whole enclosure).
This task may be completed manually. Perhaps a combination of both.
Realistically render this drawing using coloured pencils. This does not have to be fully completed, just sections.
Ensure you use the Technical Drawing Specifications.
