What does the exam look like?
The exam will be worth 90 marks.
The exam is worth 35% of your study score.
You will have 15 minutes reading time and 90 minutes writing time.
You will have a question and answer book and then a resource book with colour versions of visual communications and sometimes resource images to help you with a question.
The questions:
Typically made up of around 12 questions
Questions can have parts – Question 2a, 2b etc.
Can include multiple-choice
Short answer – practical
Short answer – written
Technical drawing question (can be made up of several parts)
Rendering question
The design question (often made up of several parts)
Some questions may require you to respond with practical answers, utilising your knowledge of drawing methods, two- and three-dimensional representational drawing, media and methods and design elements and principles.
Quite often the exam will have both visual and written stimulus material that you will need to respond to. For example, a written brief and an images to analyse.
Materials
Each year the VCAA releases the cover page of your examination which is valuable in reminding you of what you are allowed to take into the examination. Before the examination, prepare yourself a ‘kit’ with the following equipment:
Grey lead pencils
Eraser
Sharpener
Set squares (30º and 45 º)
Coloured pencils
Black fine liner
The exam is broken into four main areas:
Conventions and rendering
The brief, design elements, and design principles
Design industry
The Design Process
