Reading is one of the most important things you will do in the JLV and we do everything we can to help you enjoy it.
When you start school in September you will have the chance to choose a book from the special Bookbuzz selection.
There is a book for everyone no matter what you’re into and we’ll help you choose the perfect book for you in one of your first English lessons. Because we believe reading is so important, you’ll get to keep this book forever, like a present.
In the JLV we want you to become an expert reader.
We use the Accelerated Reader quiz programme so you can choose books you enjoy reading. Your English teacher and learning guide will monitor your progress to make sure you are doing your best. You will also use the Achieve 3000 programme online to help you develop skills in reading factual articles and to develop your vocabulary.
If you find reading difficult there is lots of extra help available for you in the JLV. You might have a reading partner, be invited to an after-school group, or use a programme such as Read Write Inc to help you to do well.
In the JLV, you will always have a book in your bag with you to read. You can visit the Knowledge Cafe before school, at break and at lunchtime to choose books. You will also have access to ebooks and audiobooks. You will be able to read in registration every day and one of your English lessons will be in the library each week. We want you to read at home every day too. You will record your reading, both at home and at school, in your reading log. Your English teacher will set you reading targets and challenges regularly and there are lots of rewards for all students who are doing well!
The JLV has a really exciting programme of author events to help you enjoy reading. You might have been to some of these events with your primary school. Recent authors include Cathy Cassidy, Dan (Jamie Johnson) Freedman, Tom Palmer, Katherine Rundell, Chris (Kid Normal) Smith, Phil Earle and Eoin Colfer.
Our students have also enjoyed comic-making workshops with Kev Sutherland from Batman comics and the Beano and have taken part in Football School! Other celebrations of reading in the JLV include World Book Day where there are free books for everybody and some exciting activities.
Reading helps you to do well in all of your subjects, not just English. Our Big Read week will help you focus on reading in all of your subjects and will introduce you to a wide range of books and reading resources. There are lots of creative competitions during this week too.
We would love you to keep reading over the summer break. You could use this list of suggestions or read other books by the authors on this list. Some of the books link to topics you will study in y7, some will help you settle in to your new school and others will just make you feel better.
You could also visit Cramlington Public Library.
We are looking forward to hearing all about what you’ve been reading in September!
