Assessment in KS3 Art takes many forms. Our students receive live verbal feedback from their teachers and peers whilst lessons are taking place, allowing them to immediately review, refine and modify their work as it progresses. Teachers also use visual, practical demonstrations to small groups and individuals to enable students to grasp challenging skills and concepts. All students in Y7,8 and 9 also receive feedback on specific skills tasks in their Assessment, Feedback and Response booklets, where differentiated statements and comments are highlighted and students act on and respond to these. Students are also encouraged to self assess and reflect upon their own work; an important element of the creative process in Art lessons.
GCSE and A Level Art Students receive constant verbal feedback from their teachers in lessons, and both students and teachers agree that this has the most impact as it is immediate and live. Students also have 'log books' which are used for teacher and self assessment, notes and for drafting written analysis. Students are provided with feedback at key points during skills-based projects, and also more in-depth written feedback at the end of each project. Students are marked using the 4 AQA Art and Design Assessment Objectives, and receive 'current' and 'most likely grades' at 3 points during the year. GCSE Photography students also receive live feedback and comments on their Google Slide presentations, creating a dialogue which supports and enables progress.
These project specific retrieval challenges are used with students to assess their retention of key knowledge, facts, skills and techniques. Students complete these as 'Connect' activities at the start of lessons, as well as being interspersed throughout projects at key points to assess retention of prior learning.
