You'll probably find that Art lessons at CLV may be quite different to your art lessons at primary school, as you will be taught in specialist art rooms. These rooms have equipment and materials in that are used just for art.
When you first start with us in Year 7, you will make a folder to keep all of your art work in and in your first few lessons you will learn all about the 'Art Formal Elements'. Don't worry if you haven't heard about these, as your teachers will explain and show you everything that you need to know.
Art lessons in Y7 are exciting, challenging and also fun. Art teachers love to try out new things and Y7 students also love to join in!
You will have 2 x 1 hour lessons of Art every cycle. In these lessons, you will do your main projects which include 'Insects' and ' Movie in a Matchbox'
You will also have some 'Secure' Art lessons where you will learn about Art History
In your Art lessons, you will only need to bring a pencil, rubber, ruler and sharpener, as all other art materials such as paints will be provided. If you have and sketching pencils such as 2B or 4B, you will find these really useful, as these are the ones that we use in lessons for shading and adding tone to your drawings. Coloured pencils and a glue stick are always useful too.
In Y7 you will do a combination of projects which develop your drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D skills. You will learn how to draw from observation and also learn about the work of other artists. Take a look at the Y7 curriculum work in the drop down menus to see some pictures and examples.
In Y7, there are options to join our popular 'Art Clubs' where you will have the chance to work on group projects, as well as use this time to develop your own art skills and techniques. These take place in most art rooms at either lunchtime or after school.
In Y7, your Art teachers will give you lots and lots of verbal feedback in lessons. This means that we will talk to you about your work(often while you are doing it) and give you advice on how to improve or refine it. We may also try to explain with drawings or sketches so that you can see how to do certain techniques. You will also have an assessment and feedback booklet where your Art teachers will comment on tasks such as observation drawing, painting and printmaking skills, and then you self assess your own work too, making suggestions on how you could improve. There is more information about assessment and some examples of our feedback booklets here.
In Y7, you will have some homework which may include quizzes and tests on Google Classroom to check your understanding of things that you've learned in lessons. You will also do an extended Art project which takes about 8 weeks, usually in the Spring term. If you look on the KS3 gallery menu, you will see some examples of past homework projects.
Take some time to enjoy making and creating artwork for yourselves, your family or friends. It really doesn't matter what type of art materials you use, as long as you are being creative. You could try doing some drawings of things in your garden, some portraits of your family, views of different places you've been or even some of your favourite foods. Your Art teachers would love to see some of your artwork when you start with us!
