Gateway is a subject option for Year 12 students and Pathways to Employment is a subject option for Year 13 students. These subject choices are an exciting opportunity for students to learn skills and gain experience to help become 'work-ready' or investigate furthering their studies in their chosen industry.
Gateway and Pathways are different to other subjects. In all other subjects, almost everyone does the same course, the same standards, the same assignments and assessments in class or on the same day in NCEA exams at the end of the year.
In Gateway and Pathways everyone does a different course. Although the class will do a core of generic standards, the focus will be for the students to explore what is best for them and their future. The students will be working in class to discover who they are, their strengths, interests, skills and wants.
Students are encouraged to bring a laptop to every Gateway/Pathways period in class. Although there will be days when students all work on the same thing, there will also be many days where students will be independent learners working on their own in class.
Some students may find self-directed study difficult, so there will be a class structure on certain days of the week.
There are three main components of a Gateway/Pathways Programme
In-Class general learning such as career exploration, time management, safe work practices etc where students have the opportunity to achieve credits.
External short courses
Group courses such as Customer Service, and Problem Solving for Gateway and First Aid for Pathways students. Plus, additional courses that may change each year depending on the students' interests.
Work Experience
Work experience connected to individual career goals (normally 1 day per week for 5+ weeks in term 2 or 3).
* Can you help place a student for their work experience placement? If so, please contact the Gateway Coordinator
Additional Information
Gateway and Pathway students have the opportunity to attend presentations from a number of guest speakers which expands the students knowledge on various industries throughout a variety of sectors.
