In grade one, it takes awhile to get students rolling with "reading" themselves. We typically start very slowly and do a lot of shared reading of the morning message, songs and simple books together. In our class, we will start with introducing one reading strategy at a time. We will practice, for example how "looking at the pictures for clues" can give us a lot of helpful information. ("Regarde partout avec le hibou!") We will do this for an entire week with the teacher modelling, then students practicing to simply look at the pictures in their little reading baskets (the same 5 books all week). Once reading period is over, students can show the class what clues they found while looking and thinking to themselves "Do I know any of the words in French for the pictures I'm seeing?"

Finally, we are always asking ourselves "Does what I'm reading sound right and make sense?" If not, I should go back and try again.

The typical range of levelled books in grade one is A-E with A being our goal at the start of grade 1, C mid-year, and E being our end of year goal. That being said, every child develops at their own pace and we are more importantly always looking for continued progress.

Cheneliere Education! This is a wonderful collection of online French levelled books. Many of these exact titles can be found in our classroom collection. Please click on the image above (little girl reading) to access the website. This is a resource that the Department paid for. There is an option for "audio" as well if you do not know much French as a parent. Please have your child do the hard work of trying to sound out tricky words before pressing the little "headphones" (speaker button) and having the word read to them.

When on the website, you will notice that each book has a number for it's "reading level." The beginning of the year we would expect students to be reading at a "Level 1/2- A/B". The middle of the year would be approximately "Level 3/4- C". The end of grade one we are looking for "Level 7/8- E." That being said these are guidelines. We are interested in steady gains and progress forward over time no matter the book level. We realize students develop at different rates.
