In grade 1, math can be a lot of fun!
The beginning of the year we sing a lot of songs to practice counting in French from 1-10. We use two sided tables to break larger numbers into smaller parts. We talk about what "one more, two more" and "one less, two less" than any random given number would be. Your child will also continue to use "ten frames" (pictured below) to help them visualize representing larger numbers. Eventually, we will use two 'ten frames' to represent numbers to twenty. Later in the year you can expect a progression to skip counting by 2, 5, and 10 as well as adding and subtracting up to twenty. We also have a unit on 2D/3D shapes, and non-standard measurement which includes concepts such as "longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, and larger/smaller volume or area."
I do not typically send math homework home. If you feel your child wants/needs more practice in this area you can do some simple things such as playing "go fish" with a deck of cards in French. You can also challenge your child and switch up this popular game to make pairs that add up to ten. Using recipe cards to create a simple memory game to match the number to its corresponding ten frame or number word are also some activities that your child may enjoy. "Pinkfong tracing world" also has an app where children can practice printing their numbers properly and building that "motor memory" by always starting at the top to limit reversals.
